On April 21, President Obama signed the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act to triple AmeriCorps’ membership and provide new volunteer opportunities for millions of Americans. For many Americans the next question is, “How do I find all of those new opportunities that are now available?” Anticipating that question, the White House has made available a new online portal called Serve.gov to help Americans find local opportunities to serve their community. President Obama offers the following welcome statement on Serve.gov:
"We need your service, right now, at this moment in history. I’m not going to tell you what your role should be; that’s for you to discover. But I am asking you to stand up and play your part. I am asking you to help change history’s course. – President Obama, 4/21/09"
Volunteering to help the environment is consistent with spiritual ideas about performing good deeds/right action, respecting the natural harmony of nature, strengthening community, and developing compassion. In celebration of Earth Day, consider taking a few minutes to browse through Search.gov for something that might resonate with you.
As the following dramatic video concludes, “What a great time to be born. What a great time to be alive, because this generation gets to completely change this world.”
