A Spare Planet in the Trunk

Someone wrote, “We treat this world as though we had a spare in the trunk.” Can anyone deny that we as a society are doing this? The thinking seems to be that if we ruin this planet, we’ll just go out into space and colonize another moon or planet. In less than two months, for example, the world will watch the results of NASA’s mission to bomb the moon in an attempt to find water and possibly support moon colonization in the future. If there is intelligent life out in the universe somewhere, how might they interpret our bombing the moon?

We all know that Earth is the only planet in our entire solar system that is covered with liquid water. But scientists have been looking outside our solar system for similar planets. They were excited earlier this year to locate the most earthlike planet yet found, called Gliese 581d, and we have all been invited by http://www.hellofromearth.net to submit messages that we’d like to transmit to that planet (submission deadline is Monday). Here are some of the messages that have been submitted so far:

  • Have you decoded the laws of the universe. Please advise us. Through ignorance we are slowly destroying all life on this planet. Eternity awaits us.
  • hi dear im from the earth.please come and save the poor people.warm welcomes to you
  • Please help us the earth weel be destroy by human. and we have some big country frighten the others small countrys
  • The year is 2009, we haven’t had contact with you yet. We also haven’t worked out how to achieve a sustainable existence on Earth. We would love your help.

Have we reached a point where we are desperately turning to alien lifeforms with unknown intentions to help us learn to live on our own planet?

As an optimist, I am encouraged whenever I see signs that we as a society are paying more attention to this planet right here under our feet. More people are seriously discussing “green energy” and “green jobs.” More people are thinking about their own carbon footprint on the planet. More people are recycling, driving fuel efficient cars, conserving water, and shutting off lights and ceiling fans before leaving a room. Let’s stay focused on our natural resources right here on earth while remaining curious about the moon and other planets. Let’s keep looking at the ground as well as the stars. We don’t have a spare planet in the trunk!

DrD..it all comes down to what I said in a comment last night or two nights ago…to achieve what is to be pure once again one must take a look inward and see themselves as whole and that is the biggest succession in all of humanity….

The biggest situation that many people face is their attachments to all things as they ignore their inner being…and put their faith something or somewhere outside themselves..the Universe is a giant clock that runs synchronistically and is perfectly balanced but in egoic world the synchros are not balanced and this is why you see what is around you is what you wrote.

I don't know if people can turn their life around to doing so but if it takes one Enlightened being to make Spirit appear for them then the whole world is saved..make sense?

May you live in peace and harmony surround you always(+)

    Hi Soul Bro Dom!

I agree that we could look inward to reach the conclusion that living in harmony with the universe would be wise, and I think we're also reaching a point pretty rapidly where we will be able to look outward and easily grasp the same lesson! I think we're going to need a global solution to this global problem; everyone will be a part of it. Thanks as always for sharing your wisdom!

    Peace and love,

    Deb

Pogo had it right: "We have met the enemy and he is us." However, the paradox within that statement is, of course, we have within us our own salvation.

It is my hope that we as a species discover our commonality and shared humanity. It is my hope that we learn to coexist and live in harmony with life on this planet.

Thank you for your post, which puts "the spare" mentality in humorous, but apt, terms. Best to you. M.

Deb, I enjoyed this posting and also had fun going to the Hello From Earth website and adding my message to some possible neighbors. Hopefully, if there is life on Gliese 581d, it is more evolved than we are and can inspire us to "clean up our act" before we completely self destruct.

    Love you,

    Gayle

Thank you mckra1g (love the Pogo quote!), Soul Bro Dom, and Gayle!

Gayle, I share your optimism about evolved life on Gliese 581d — my husband is worried that we'll only find "bear sharks" who want to come eat us all! ;-)

    Peace and love,

    Deb
