The Struggle of Finding Purpose

Question:

I have always struggled with knowing my purpose on this earth, I have trouble feeling inspired and motivated. My family and siblings and friends all say that I am so full of life and have so much potential and that they wish they had such a fervour for life, but the truth is I find myself masking for them and underneath it all I feel lost and at a loss for a way or plan to achieve my happiness. I recently moved from my country to the US and is now living with my father who I did not have a loving relationship with as a child and an adult and is struggling to carve some sort of resemblance to one and this is hard. How do I put my feelings to rest re my father and start living this life I know that I want ….NOW?

Answer:

I frequently  get this question of people struggling to find their purpose in life.  Implied in their question there is often a sense that it shouldn’t be hard to figure out, someone should just tell them and make it easy for them. However, learning your purpose and place in the world is itself the journey of self-discovery. Nothing is more important or as valuable  in your  life. No one can do that for you, and it is immature to resent the challenge of becoming an adult and earning your spiritual awareness. So even if it is a struggle to know yourself, don’t give in to self-pity or dejection. Welcome the circumstances that life  offers  as  the opportunity to grow  into a more complete and self-directed person.  This includes the  situation of moving in with your father.  Take this as the chance to heal your childhood relationship with him and develop a new relationship with him as a grown-up.

Love,

Deepak

I think that when you're actively searching for a purpose to your life, that you often view others as "having it together" and there seems to be this divide. The truth is, that finding your purpose is often difficult, and you may find that it has layers. Underneath it all, though, are likely major drives.

I have found it helpful to repeatedly ask questions about what drives me and how I can better achieve my goals, even if I'm not sure what those goals are at that moment. Over time, you can peel back the layers by asking questions.

    What do you think?
