Qigong for Health

I am always looking for new health modalities to incorporate into my preventive health ‘program’ (aka Life!).  The most recent addition is Qigong which I love! I am currently taking a 6 week Qigong workshop where we learn exercises which can be done at home.  After doing these exercises, I feel serene, grounded, healthy and happy (ie. on Cloud 9!).

What is Qigong?

Qigong (pronounced Chee-gong) is a 5000 year old Chinese healing modality which helps tap into our energy and life force.  The word Qigong is Chinese and means “Skillful practice of applying life-force energy.”

Qigong builds the immune system and strengthens the body through a series of slow Tai Chi-like moves performed in synchrony with deep breath. The exercises are short breath healing exercises focusing on the internal organs of the body.  Qigong is based on repetitions of very precise sets of movements, specifically designed to benefit health on many different levels. Once harmony is restored in the body, it can heal itself.

What are the health benefits?

There are many Qigong benefits – too many to list them all in one blog post!  Here is a benefit summary from my amazing Qigong teacher, Lenka Love:

  • Cleanse (purge) the body of toxic energy, thoughts, & illness.
  • Strengthen (tonify) the body, correcting internal organ dysfunctions.
  • Balance (regulate) the body, its energies and internal organs, creating harmony in the body, mind and spirit.

Practicing Qigong daily can reduce stress, increase energy and promote health and overall well-being.

How to learn Qigong?

Many local community rec-centers offer regular Qigong classes, along with martial arts and wellness centers.  It is a good idea to take a few classes to start to learn proper techniques and exercises.  Once you have the basics, you can do your practice at home, or in nature which is my preference.  There are also many online resources which feature Qigong videos.  Here is a good resource of videos which I found on NaturalNews.com.  You will find the resources which work best for you.  Invent your own practice and go with the flow!

I am grateful to have Qigong as a daily practice in my life.  Whenever I feel my stress levels rising, I stop, do a simple Qigong exercise and – voila – I feel calm!  It is amazing!

Vitamin B3 – My ‘Interesting’ Experience!

Kim Duess and Vitamin B3At my last visit to my TCM (Doctor of Chinese Medicine), I asked her for something to help me with cramps.  She gave me a few great tips, including take Vitamin B3 (Niacin) every hour when cramps are heavy.  So off I went to my health food store to pick up some Vitamin B3!  The lady at the health food store asked if I would like the ‘no-flush B3′.  I asked what the difference was and she said that some people experience red, tingling skin for a while with the regular Vitamin B3.  She said if I took the regular version, I should take it with food.  I decided on the regular B3 as a little red skin doesn’t bother me and I am not overly sensitive to anything.

I will now tell you what happened 5 days ago.  It was 6 days after my knee surgery and along with my surgery pain, I was having cramps, so I decided to take my B3 for the first time.  I forgot about the ‘take it on a full stomach’ and took 100 mg 2 hours after my breakfast. I then went upstairs to do a little work on my computer.  After 5 minutes, I felt a tingling sensation and thought ‘Oh geez, I wonder if I have a blood clot!’  Blood clots can form after surgery and I’d been doing exercises to keep the blood moving to avoid clots.  So I was very aware of blood clot symptoms, which can include tingling sensation in your leg for a knee surgery.

The tingling was not located in my leg but all over my body.  I decide to lie down for a few minutes to see if this would help.  It did not.  The tingling became stronger, my skin was itching and now I felt like I was on fire!  I ripped off the ice packs from my knee and threw them on my head…I called out for my partner, Dave, and he came running in to help.  Things were not getting better as my heart rate was rising and I was sweating.  We went to the hospital to find out what was wrong.

I was greeted by a cheerful nurse who asked me if I’d taken any Vitamin B3, after she heard/saw (I looked like a red lobster!) my symptoms! I said yes …. and asked ‘why’?  She told me that this is a common reaction to Vitamin B3.  WOW.

So no, I did not have a blood clot :)   It was a reaction to B3!

Apparently if you take an Asprin 30 minutes before your Vitamin B3 or take with a meal, this will help avoid the side effects.

Store Bought Baby Food Can Be Worse Than Fast Food

Kim Duess and BabyI have a very cute 8 month old nephew and, therefore, I am much more aware of the ‘baby world’!  There is a lot to learn and one of the most important things to pay attention to is what goes into their little bodies.

My nephew is lucky enough to have parents who are extremely conscious about his health and what goes into his body (and what goes on it for that matter!).  Along with being breastfed, he now has all organic food.  Remember, breast milk is the healthiest food that a baby can eat!  If you can, stay away from infant formula and definitely do not feed your baby soy infant formula!  Soy formula can expose your baby to estrogen, affect thyroid function, and can affect hormone levels.

I read an article recently called Junk Food Babies.  I wasn’t surprised at what I read.  A quote from the article:

“Researchers discovered that Farley’s Original Rusks contained more sugar than McVities Dark Chocolate Digestives, that Heinz Toddler’s Own Mini Cheese Biscuits had more saturated fat per 100g than a McDonald’s Quarter Pounder with cheese , and that Cow&Gate Baby Balance Bear Biscuits contained trans fats”

Yikes!  So if you are going to purchase baby food, try to buy organic.  Even organic has its downfalls as the levels of sodium can be very high.  It is worth taking the time to steam some veggies, mash them up and – voila – organic, fresh food for your little one!

To your (and your baby’s!) health,

Get Your Antioxidants by Drinking Rooibos Tea

Kim Duess Rooibos Tea has the highest plant antioxidants in the world!  Antioxidants help slow the aging process and boost the immune system. A great way to start off your day is to brew a pot of Rooibos tea and let it brew all day.  It will just keep getting stronger in antioxidants as it steeps.

Nervous tension, allergies and digestive problems may also be helped by drinking Rooibos.

If caffeine is a concern, no worries with this tea!  It is caffeine free and contains almost no oxalic acid, making it a good drink for people with kidney stones.  Most teas interfere with iron absorpotion, but rooibos does not.

According to Dr. Russel Blaylock (The Blaylock Wellness Report),  drinking at least 2 cups of strong rooibos tea a day would go a long way in not only protecting our liver, but many other parts of our body including our brain.  He says other recent studies have shown that it protects against radiation injury to cells and tissues, prevents mutations that can lead to cancer, enhances liver detox and prevents aging damage to the brain.

Packed with nutritional punch AND is yummy! :)   Great way to start the day!

The Power of Words

This is a wonderful short film illustrating the power your words have on creating your reality and how changing them can truly change your life.  Much along the same lines as Dr. Wayne Dyer’s message that changing your thoughts can indeed change your life.

Dr. Oz’s (from Oprah) Green Drink Recipe! YUM.

I think Dr. Oz is great!  I love what he does and love his message.  I saw Oprah’s show “Turn Back Time” where Dr. Oz gave health tips on how to reduce aging, and be more healthy.  He made his special Green Drink on the show which I am posting below.

Eating more raw food is a great way to ‘turn back the clock’ and feel energized.  I try to juice a few times a week.  The ultimate would be to juice everyday!  That is my goal :)

Here is the recipe from an excerpt on Oprah:

Dr. Oz’s Green Drink

  • 2 cups spinach
  • 2 cups cucumber
  • 1 head of celery
  • 1/2 inch or teaspoon ginger root
  • 1 bunch parsley
  • 2 apples
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • Juice of 1/2 lemon

After everything is combined in a blender, this recipe makes 28 to 30 ounces—about three to four servings. Oprah takes a sip and is pleasantly surprised. “It’s a glass of fresh,” she says.

Bladder Infections – A Natural Treatment – Dr. Jonathan Wright

Treat a bladder infection without antibiotics?  You bet!

Dr. Jonathan Wright, renowned antiaging doctor, speaks about a natural treatment in the book Breakthrough, by Suzanne Somers.  Below is a summary of his discussion with Suzanne.

Did you know that 90% of all bladder infections are thanks to the bacteria E. coli?  Sometimes E. coli, normally found  in the colon, can end up in the bladder and this is when things turn a tad uncomfortable!

D-mannose is a simple sugar that is found in cells in the bladder.  E. coli sticks to D-mannose in the bladder and then the thriving E. Coli reproduce, creating mayhem in the bladder.  E. Coli aren’t flushed out of the bladder, because they are clinging to the D-mannose for dear life. This is where the natural treatment comes in!

We can only metabolize a certain amount of D-mannose and we excrete the excess.  So if we take D-mannose (he suggests 3-5 grams), the E. Coli will be super happy and will cling to the excess D-mannose which will be excreted.  Bladder infection cured. Brilliant, isn’t it!  And like all antiaging medicine, it just makes sense.

Oh yes, this isn’t ‘mainstream’ because D-mannose is natural and cannot be patented!

Dr. Wright also notes that this will work 9 out of 10 times.  If it does not work, seek medical attention and you may indeed need to take an antibiotic.

Stay tuned for more Breakthrough tips!

You are what you eat.  Food DOES matter!

I was inspired and motivated after watching Food Matters.  It reinforced a lot of the knowledge I have obtained over the last 10 years and reminded me why I do what I do!   Everytime I watch this movie, I gain insight on something new.

This documentary is a must see for all those who want to take control over their health and be informed about the choices available to all of us. Yoga Classes Online – YogaToday.com – Great Resource!

I love yoga.  I love going to my local yoga studio.  I am not sure why it is so hard for me to get my butt out the door and into the yoga studio!  But it is a challenge.  I don’t have any problem going to CrossFit classes.  It is a strange phenomenon!

I was talking to a friend about this and she has the same issue.  She told me she now does yoga classes at home in her living room using YogaToday.com.  She said that the classes are great and there were many to choose from, plus the yearly membership is only $85.95 which is less than a 1 month membership at most yoga studios.  They also offer 1 free class per week to non-members. It all sounded great to me!

I signed up for the 2 week free-trial and did a few classes in the comfort of my living room.  I couldn’t believe the huge selection of classes!  You can choose classes based on skill level, instructor, and focus.  The videos are high quality and the streaming works perfectly.

I signed up for a year membership and will combine my home practice with my visits to my favourite yoga studio.  For me, it is the perfect combo!  Plus I can take YogaToday.com with me when I am traveling.

If you want to try yoga at home, check out their 2 week free-trial and see how you like it!
