Living with Intent: 6 Steps to Living a Healthier, More Joyful & Purposeful Life

MallikaChopra

About two years ago, I approached my father (Deepak Chopra) with a confession. I told him I was generally exhausted, over caffeinated and my sugar addiction was out of control.  I realized I was overscheduled trying to balance my role as a wife, mom, and entrepreneur with Intent.com, my start-up social media company. I felt bloated and had a lot of body pain. I hadn’t been meditating or exercising much, and at night I was having trouble sleeping. My father looked shell shocked, and it took a few moments for him to transition from concerned father to Deepak Chopra, the person that thousands go to for health advice. Continue reading

Intent of the Day: Maintain Our Identity

beach

In the midst of changing seasons, strong personalities, new situations, finding yourself tossed in the waves of personality is a great likelihood. We’re navigating bosses, spouses, family members, strangers, ourselves. It’s a lot to juggle and if you’re not careful, you can find yourself changing shape based on the circumstance when ideally we would all show up as our most authentic selves.

When we can maintain our identities, the world gets to experience the gift of our individuality, our contribution of feelings and perspective and the confidence that comes when we are successfully able to communicate. Today our intent is to maintain our identity in a sea of personalities.

We love our community’s commitment to grow in fearlessness.
The truth is we all face fears and they come in all shapes and sizes.
Not all fears are imagined either. You may be facing a real threat and so you do not need to feel compelled to disqualify your concerns. In fact, that is exactly what we’re talking about today. Our featured intent is about remaining fearless through the shadows, through the fears that are really looming.

Intent of the Day: Honor Thy Feelings

fullsizerender

Suck it up. Deal with it. No crying in baseball.
If you grew up like me, sharing those feelings was for someone who couldn’t control themselves. You became adept at stuffing it all down, explaining it all away and then finding yourself in the same place over and over with no explanation in sight. Maybe it’s time to honor those feelings instead of bottling them up. Here are 3 things that might help:

  • This quote from Mitch Albom.
    move-on
We wonder why we get stuck in pattens but we don’t always hesitate to react to scenarios the same way without considering their impact. Conflict ensues and we shut down. Or we feel powerless. We grow enraged. If we don’t start to notice what is arising, we stand very little chance of changing a negative pattern. Instead, allow yourself to see what comes up. Again, you don’t have to let a feeling dictate the choices you make, but nothing is gained by ignoring that you are hurt when the same family member leaves you out of holiday planning or that you are at wits end about a roommate or partner’s cleaning habits. Notice. Acknowledge. Know what needs to be let go and what needs to be discussed so that you really can move forward.

  • This video from Spirit Junkie Gabby Bernstein who encourage us to honor our feelings.
Gabby says it so simply. Sometimes bottling comes from an unwillingness to be in the present. Do you feel like you deserve the thing that makes you mad or sad? Do you feel like you have a voice? Do you feel like your opinions are worth listening to? There are so many reasons and past baggage that can stop us from honoring how we feel in the moment. Perhaps changing that one pattern, deciding to honor your feelings, is a key waiting to unlock a new view of yourself and your life.

Tap Into Your Compassion to Push Out Negativity

carOur most negative encounters can sometimes offer us great spiritual guidance. For instance, I once had a blow-out fight with a woman at a car rental counter. She felt the need to flaunt her power and go out of her way to make things difficult for me. My reac
tion was no better than her outburst. I felt the need to respond with my own power play by threatening to call her manager and make a complaint. And I did just that.
Hours after stating my claim to her corporate office and regional manager, I felt no better. I thought that complaining about how poorly I was treated would help me get over the experience. Instead, it made me feel worse. I sat with this and explored what the lesson was for me. In stillness, I heard my inner voice recite one of Yogi Bhajan’s five sutras for the Aquarian age: “Recognize the other person is you.” I was floored by my inner guide—the message was so clear and resonant.
I went on to explore what it was about this angry customer service rep that reflected me. I came to realize that her behavior was merely mirroring a disowned part of my own shadow. In silent contemplation I was able to accept that deep down there was a part of me that wanted to control the situation and the outcome. This was the same quality the customer-service representative had. Her deep-rooted need to be in control came head-to-head with my need to be in control.
