Have a Happy Day

John Morton, D.S.S.

We always have the opportunity, no matter what kind of day we’re having, to choose to be happy.  So ask yourself, “Are you willing to make the choice to be happy?  To have a happy day?”

The next question to ask yourself is, “Am I willing to let go?” I know when we’re miserable, we’re often hanging on to something.  Maybe we’re still hurting over something. So part of the misery may be about that hurt or upset. I’m not talking only about physical occurrences where we might have been hit or injured. I’m also referring to what some may consider the more powerful injury which takes place in our emotions and the way we think about things. Often, that’s the source of the hurt that endures and hangs on.  So are you willing to let go of that misery and hurt too?

What if part of letting go involves sacrifice? Sometimes, if you really want to let go of the misery, there may be something to let go of that’s valuable to you or at least you perceive it as valuable.  For example, let’s say you’re hungry and you’re eating an apple.  But then you’re sick to your stomach.  You may say, “I can’t give up that apple. It’s food, and I’m hungry.”  Well, what if that’s a rotten apple?  And it happens to be what’s making you sick?  Can you let go of what’s making you miserable, even if you think it’s valuable to you?

Consider that when you’re miserable, that misery or upset is something you’re allowing, promoting, or creating.  You have the responsibility and the opportunity to allow, promote or create a miserable day or a happy one.  It’s up to you.  If you’re willing to have a happy day, you can.  You can have a break from your misery, today or any day.  How do you do that?  You choose to move your attitude away from the misery and upset. You choose to let it go.

Even people in prisons get to go out into the yard, have some exercise, and do things that people who aren’t in prison get to do. They don’t get to do everything, but  they usually get to do enough happy things that are away from the misery or upset in their prison life.  So regardless of the source of the misery, there’s always an opportunity to do something happy, to choose to have a happy day regardless of the situation.

Do you have ideas of what would make you happy?  Start thinking of those things.  You have the power to bring your mind to those happy thoughts.  That’s the primary power in happiness — it’s a state of mind. It’s the way we look at things and how we relate to things.  So think happy thoughts.  Remember, your mind is free.  You can do happy things in your mind.

When you think happy thoughts, those happy thoughts have power.  Your natural creativity allows that happy energy to manifest and be shared.  It’s easy to smile, especially when somebody is smiling at you.  What about smiling at someone who may need your smile?  That’s the time to look past someone’s misery and smile at them.  You can transmit to them your happiness and help them make their day a happy one.

Happiness is contagious.  Are you willing to catch it?  Are you willing to pass it along?  Happy people do.  Have you ever noticed that about happy people?  They’re spontaneous and open to participate.  Maybe they’re considered nuts, but they’re happy nuts!

Be careful that you don’t let somebody take you off your happiness to join their misery.  Stay up in your happiness, and do those things that keep you up.  If you’re feeling down, then do something to take care and attend to those feelings.  At those times, it works best to tune within.  That can mean just being in your heart, having some quiet time, or doing something to take care of yourself.

Your soul, your true nature, is always happy regardless of how you’re feeling, what you’re thinking, or what’s going on around you.  So go inside to where you’re always happy.  That’s a great way to get back in tune with your happy thoughts.

Remember, if you want to have a happy day, do happy things.  Think happy thoughts. Choose to make each day a happy day.  Why?  Because you can.

The Perfect “Thank You” from Ruby Bay Vineyards

Winemaking became a passion when I got out of college. It was something I did for fun and friends and family really looked forward to a glass of my homemade wine. When the opportunity came to own a vineyard with my brother in law David, I jumped at the chance. We called it “Ruby Bay Vineyards” because his wife’s name is Ruby. It’s only fair after all; he did find the vineyard and owns more than half of it.

Ruby Bay Vineyard labelHaving our own vineyard has been exciting and we’ve just passed the first year mark for our business. We wanted to do something nice to thank our customers. We started looking at all of these elaborate thank you gifts like gourmet food baskets or engraved wine glasses – when my brother-in-law said, “Let’s make a special batch of wine, just for this one year anniversary.” That sounded really perfect. But we wanted the bottles to look different, not like our other bottles. So David found custom wine labels for our wine bottles. We could add a message along with our logo and company name. It was all in full color and looked very professional. It was the perfect touch and the ideal way to say thank you to all of our customers who have stood by us for this past year.

The wine came out beautifully and David and I both knew right away this was a very special wine. We added the labels and started sending it out. On the labels we said, “Thank you for your patronage, celebrating our 1st year. Ruby Bay Vineyards.” Right away we started to get response. Our customers loved the wine! I actually had customers begging me to order cases of this special vintage of wine we’d created just for this purpose, something we hadn’t thought about.

The response was so strong from our Thank You wine that we’ve decided to add that vintage to our regular offerings. We call it our Anniversary Wine. I think we’ll make a different one for each year to thank our customers. From what started out as a simple idea, thanking our customers for their business has grown into an even bigger idea we hadn’t even thought of.

The personalized label was ideal because we could add a message without bothering with the fuss of a card. Both David and I were worried about what would happen if the card dropped off the bottle or somehow got lost. Then out customer wouldn’t understand why we were sending them a bottle of wine. We wanted to be 100% sure they knew we were sending this as a thank you. We also wanted to be sure they knew this was to celebrate our 1st year in business. Both ideas worked successfully with the personalized labels that were so easy to attach to our wine bottles. They wine labels looked professional, and in full color we easily got the style we hoped to achieve.

Ruby Vineyards may be small but we are dedicated to making fine wine that people enjoy. I think that passion and enthusiasm shows with every glass. Salut and to your good health!

Blog #3 – Can torture be justified under certain circumstances?

Sam Harris, the author of the book "The end of faith" bring up a quite difficult and very important question. -Can torture under special circumstances be ethicly justified? I believe the answer to that is no and I’ll try and explain why shortly. Please note that I do not hold this position because its the easy way out, I will try and make sound arguments for it.

Before I begin I want to make it very clear that Mr Harris is not a supporter of torture, he believes it should be illegal by law, but that this law under very special circumstances should be allowed to be dodged. Let me quote him:

"Some readers have mistakenly concluded that I take a cavalier attitude toward the practice of torture. I do not. Nevertheless, there are extreme circumstances in which I believe that practices like “water-boarding” may not only be ethically justifiable, but ethically necessary.  This is not the same as saying that they should be legal (e.g. crimes like trespassing or theft may sometimes be ethically necessary, while remaining illegal)."

He continues:

"many readers have found my views deeply unsettling.  (For what it’s worth, I do too. It would be much easier to simply be “against torture” across the board and end the discussion)"

These quotes has been taken from his web page and I recommend reading everything he has to say about his position on torture as he makes many valid points: http://www.samharris.org/site/full_text/response-to-controversy2/

I think that the reason why Sam, myself and hopefully all human beings find acceptance of torture intuitively disturbing is because it is counter-intuitive in respect to our survival instincts. I believe that ethics and the notion that "treating others the way you want them to treat you" is a meaningfull aproach which has been given to us by evolution in order for us to function as a social specie. As we know from science, a species chance of surviving increase dramaticly if its individuals are able to work together as a team and from this I believe we evolved feelings, like for instance love and compassion, as a means for communication. Others believe that ethics and morals are given to us by a certain God, but how we got morals and why we experiene them is not cruicial to the point I am going to make here. The important thing is that torture feels intuitively and generally wrong to most of us regardless of why we think so.

While I believe that torture might under some rare circumstances lead to the savings of innocent lives I do at the same time believe that any acceptance of torture would be to work against the big picture and actually result in far more deaths and evil acts in the long run. Evolution seems to be working towards an ideal, if it ever get there is a different question, but never the less it is constantly improving its products by making them better and better at surviving. Evolution seems to have given us the notion that torture is wrong and I do not see why we should not trust our instincts on this. (Theism would usually explain this quite similarily, evolution and instincts would just be switched with a moral compass.)

For if we let ourselves fall to the temptation of practicing torture I believe we are working against our ethical evolution. Without evolving our ethics further it will be impossible to fullfill the full potential of communication. Afterall, communication and the understanding of our neighbour is the fundament for all social interaction. I believe that all evil that has ever been committed are the results of inadequate understanding and in some rare cases the results of birth defects. Now, it is important to distinguish between evil and evil acts. I do not believe in evil people, I do only believe in evil acts. If a person is born evil then that is a result of a genetic defect which we then have to deal with through the art of medicine. Either way I think it will be impossible to distinguish birth defects from true personal ethics if we do not first understand communication the best we can, and this can in my opinion only be done by following our ethical instincts as there seem to be no definite truths on this matter.

This makes me believe that torture should never under any circumstances be allowed, not even if a nuclear bomb threatened to destroy the whole of humanity. We are a race of inventors, inventing new and better ways of doing things is part of what makes us human. If we are not able to come up with acceptable alternatives to torture then I believe we have failed as a human race and may just as well become instinct like the vast number of species before us. My position against torture might sound too idealistic and that might be so, I’ll rather be labeled as an idealist than lose my faith in the fundamental good that I believe fuels our humanity further, ever reaching for the true ideal.

So, what do you think? Please let me know your thoughts on my thoughts and your thoughts on the matter in general.

Cheers!

-Leo

The Game Of Life

I believe that life is like a game.
To become a good player requires discipline,
dedication and determination.
You have to know and understand the game.
And you need to know exactly which position you want to play.

Becoming a good player means
staying focussed on the game and realising your potential.
You have to have insight on the goals you would like to achieve
and practice hard and long to get to there.

You simply cannot cry over past mistakes
and worry about the future.
You have to stay focussed on where you are
and where you would like to be.
Yes, you have to be very clear about where you’re heading too.

Stay firm on your feet and avoid any distractions.
When you fall, get up as quickly as you can
and continue to play.
Focus on what you can do and accomplish,
instead of what you can’t.

Make good use of your talents and abilities
or you might lose them forever.
Take heed of your strenghths and in so-doing
keep them alive, growing and developing.
Also, learn to develop good communication.

Know your opponents amd team players.
Keep your eyes on those who play with you.
But also, don’t lose sight of those who play against you.
And remember, practice makes perfect.

Possesion of the ball is the key
     to winningin football,
basketball, and the game of life.”

Exciting Times

One of the things I have noticed lately is the proliferation of articles about the changing energies in our universe.  Some are attributing it to the coming of 2012, to Armageddon, to alien visitation, and to the environmental changes.  Some have even gone so far as to write:  “make sure you have food and water, your will made up, etc.”

I agree that the energy is building – and that big changes are coming.  How could they not!!  With the way things have been going on the surface level, it looks like everything is falling apart – yet, what if everything is really falling into its right and perfect places?

What if all the individual prayers for peace, harmony, prosperity, right-work, health, and love are coming into fruition right now?  Things certainly are showing up more quickly in my life!  I just have to think a thing and there it is!

And because what I am experiencing is just a microcosm of the macrocosm – what if all the prayers we’ve been doing for world peace, health, prosperity and food and water for all, are coming into fruition right now?

Have you noticed that in your own experience, things seem to look the worst just before they get better???  The old paradigms are in their death throes, battling to stay alive.  The new paradigms, that I believe we set up more publically in the ‘60’s, are taking their places.

We are living in exciting times!!  And each of us is going to experience these times by what we focus on. It is more important than ever to keep the High Watch.  It is more important than ever to keep claiming Good for all.  Here’s a spiritual practice for you:   At least four times today, let yourself stop what ever you are doing, take a few deep breaths and say “I live in a wonderful world.”

Blessings, Rev. Angelica

SPIRITUAL MIND TREATMENT

I am so grateful to remember Who I Am – God in form, having an experience of being human through and as me.  I am grateful to know I am Love and using Law in every moment.

I refuse to participate in a conversation of doom and gloom.  I am living in world of my making that is peaceful and filled with happiness, health, wealth and creativity.  I am living in a world that works for everyone.  I declare I am ready to ride the wave of good for all.

As I speak these words, I let them sink deep into my subjective mind and become fully embodied there.  Nothing can move me off Center because this is where I am rooted in faith.  I trust God, the Good and my All–Sufficiency, with my whole being.

Gratefully I release these words into the Law of Mind, knowing they are already so, and so it is.

DOING JUST A LITTLE MORE REGARDING OUR SELF-DEVELOPMENT

It was by sharing experiences with people involved in spirituality for over thirty years showed a common factor: Possessing a strong desire of self-improvement, which was born from our urgent inner need, when we will find the ways, means and correct inspirations to carry out successfully our main goals.

We all discovered the great importance of our smelling sense. If of all our physical perception senses, the sense of smelling is the one that remembers the most, then why don’t we use more often in order not to lose sight of our recent acquired objectives?

Many years ago to accelerate my self-improvement I came across by the scent of freshly scratched lemon peel blending it with affirmations.

Affirmations which repeated each one of them three times, and leaving a four second pause as an interval my subconscious mind was easily reached, so the affirmations did their work very effectively.

Recent scientific discoveries have cast some light about the closed relationship that exists between our olfactory nerve with our third eye. Let’s recall that our subconscious mind doesn’t ask questions at all because is like an obedient genie at the mercy of our commands. This mind is linked to our subjective mind and this mind is responsible for the correct functioning of our memory files, our habits, will power, reasoning powers and creative imagination.

Here at Intent we have daily golden opportunities to take advantages not only form our victories, but from our defeats as well.

The mind nearer to our inner self is our subconscious mind, in other words it uses our intuition because it is closer to God’s messages. So, what kind of actions would be a good idea to follow in order to be successful? It’s highly recommended that step by step we try to eliminate most of our bad habits, and as they are removed we will enjoy placing new good habits. Summarizing:

It is when we use EFT techniques hand in hand with our smell sense; lemon peel, and our always effective triple repetition affirmations with the four second pause that we easily accomplish our objectives of effective self-development.

If this is done from the new moon to the full moon our efforts will be greater. It is during these two weeks when all our chakras are radiating their best healing energies.

Our self-improvement should be everybody’s main intent, so please let’s do some important feedback on this extraordinary technique. Please make comments on this, so many more people can be helped in their continuous improvement. Best regards

The Balance of Being Human

There are precious few of us humans — and most likely none — who are all good or all bad. Mostly we bumble around doing good things sometimes and naughty things other times, feeling just about as human as we are.

According to researchers at Northwestern University, there’s a good reason for that. Political theorist Hannah Arendt said that "most evil is done by people who never make up their minds to be good or evil." And this, the researchers say, is exactly their point.

Their study discovered that we all have what could be called an internal goodness set-point, a level of moral functioning at which uprightness and turpitude balance each other out. We don’t make up our minds to be good or evil, we just act on our deep impulses, doing good things to compensate for too many bad ones or bad ones to make up for too much good.

Professors Sonya Sachdeva, Rumen Iliev and Douglas Medin co-authored the study, “Sinning Saints and Saintly Sinners: The Paradox of Moral Self-Regulation,” published by the journal Psychological Science

By Kathy Ehrich Dowd of Tonic. For more latest news on good news, visit Tonic.com.
Study subjects were told they were doing a handwriting test. They were asked to write a story using either positive or negative words after thinking about the meaning of each word. They were also asked if they wanted to donate to charity. In one experiment, those who wrote using the negative words — such as "selfish," "dishonest" and "cruel" — donated five times as much as those who had been writing about positive words like "kind," "caring" and "generous."

Could NGOs take a page from this book in service to their causes? Perhaps messages using words like selfish, dishonest and cruel will jumpstart activism and generosity. Seems unlikely, but then again, we’re only human.

You Are the Blessings in the Challenge

Think of a challenge in your life and ask yourself, “What is the blessing?” Take a moment to consider that this difficulty may be a blessing in disguise.  Be open to seeing the answer in a way that includes you as the blessings.  You are integral to the blessings. There’s nothing separating you from the blessings.

John Morton, D.S.S.

As you look for the blessings, be willing to sacrifice old ways of thinking such as, “I’m wrong. I’m not good enough. I can’t do it.  It’s not worth it.”  Give up any negative point of view that says, “No, there aren’t any blessings here.”  Let go of those doubts.  Consider it a small price to pay in order for you to experience the blessings.

As you let go of your denial and look for the good, you’re allowing yourself to be shown the blessings. All that you need to do is to bring your awareness to the truth of your being — you are the blessings.

Sometimes I have tried to convince myself that looking for the good will not work.  I have thought that a situation or a person was bad, wrong or evil.  Regardless of how bad or wrong I have perceived something, I still have an opportunity to look for the good in the midst of my “bad” experience.

At times, I say to myself, “See the good.  See the Divine.  At the same time, I also find myself saying, “No, I do not want to look for the good.”  I realize I am wrestling within myself between the good that already is and my not wanting to look for it.

When I do look for the good, the blessings appear to me. Then I realize how silly I have been to even attempt to focus on the bad or negative.  I may feel embarrassed and even amused.  I then have to admit how bad, wrong, or foolish I was to judge the situation or the person.  I may also have my self-judgments to deal with.  But at least I’ve gotten my focus back with me to my learning and growth and the good that is present. It is much easier to deal with challenges this way.  Rather than judging, I choose to accept the situation as well as myself in my learning.

Attempting to place the problem outside of me and blaming others is futile. When I bring the responsibility back with me and how I am choosing to look at things, situations become easier to manage.  I feel more confident and secure as I approach my challenges because I am coming from a place of trust in my source that all that is coming forward is for my greater good.

Looking for the good does not necessarily feel good every time.  So when I feel uncomfortable, upset or disturbed, I ask myself, “What or who am I judging in this situation?  Am I judging myself?  Have I forgotten the good that is present?”

Do the best you can with your life situation, including those times when you don’t consciously understand or have a clear sense of the blessings. We are learning to trust ourselves and our source.  So remember to relax and be patient. There is value in learning to wait. Waiting can help you prepare for when the opportunity actually becomes available for your choosing.

As you endure, steer clear of judging your process.  Judgments can distract us and cause us to  waste opportunities. Trust your process and the challenges you face.  Know that your eternally loving source is bringing to you experiences and blessings that are important in the timing that is best for you.  You can always choose to be looking for the good and the greater good to become.

Trust that your life always has opportunities to better know and understand what God is doing with you and all of us here in this world. You can trust that God understands that you want more enjoyment, that you want to contribute and participate in making your life work in ways that are happy and fulfilling.  You are an infinite source of blessings.  You are in the process of realizing the blessings are already in motion and becoming the reality of your life more fully as you choose the greater good.

Formula For Happiness

Finally, someone says he’s found the key to happiness — it’s a formula that looks like this: O + (N x S) + Cpm/T + He.

Welsh psychologist Dr. Cliff Arnall devised the formula based on those things that tend to make us feel the best. O stands for being outdoors, N for connection with nature (how these first two are different exactly I’m not sure), S for social interaction, Cpm for memories of childhood summers, T for temperature and He for excitement about holidays.

To determine one’s level of happiness on any given day, Dr. Arnall gives values to the symbols in his equation. Scientifically speaking, of course, this is, as they say over on Dr. Arnall’s side of the pond, a total load of bollocks.

But even from sociological and psychological perspectives, I see a couple red flags fluttering. First of all, can any true measure of happiness neglect the satisfaction we feel from giving and giving back? Secondly, I notice that this equation does not include coffee. Anyone else dubious about this?

Regarding the first point, I can’t imagine I’m the only kid who was excited about Christmas not only because I got to receive presents but because I got to watch my loved ones open the gifts I had carefully chosen for them. I doubt I’m unique in valuing a career path in nonprofits (or public service) because it gives me a sense of meaning and well-being to work for worthy causes and promote the social good. I believe it is not at all unusual to find a smile on your face after you’ve helped someone in need.

In fact, I don’t think it’s going too far to state that doing something that addresses the larger good (whether it’s giving up your bus seat for an old lady, donating a dollar to a worthy cause or spending your days working at a food bank) is essential to a fundamental sense of happiness.

I therefore hereby modify Dr. Arnall’s formula thus: Happiness = (O + (N x S) + Cpm/T + He) x G, where G stands for doing good in some way.

I recognize that this means those who give and give back will be orders of magnitude happier than those who don’t. But that’s probably true in the end, or at least during the nervous breakdown when those with a low “G” score realize their ungenerous lives have no meaning.

Oh, and about my second point, I must yet again revise: (O + (N x S) + Cpm/T + He) x G + C, where C, of course, is caffeine.

My alterations to this formula have the benefit of adding more factors that we can control. One downside of the original formula is that we can only influence half of the factors in it (O, N and S). Subscribing to that formula would mean learning to appreciate the natural ebbs and flows of our lives instead of striving too hard for joy.

And that leaves little room for my search for the perfect latte.
