Forget New Year, New You! 2016 Intent: Take Small Steps to Make Lasting Change

It’s January 8 and I am already way behind the New Year.

I have been eating a buttermilk biscuit for breakfast almost daily, and have worked out only once. (I did go for a 5 mile walk with friends.) I’m still tracking down addresses for our holiday (now New Year’s) card. I have an application sitting on my desk that I have had 6 months to complete, and that is due Jan 15th, and I will probably submit Jan 13th. (A day earlier than the deadline, because I have to teach and travel Jan 14th so that’s how long I can procrastinate). It took me a week to find Maria Kondo’s de-cluttering book in my stuffed drawers to lend to my sister-in-law.

I have so much to do for Intent, our company,  … like even posting my first intent for 2016 on our new Iphone app. Those who read my book, Living With Intent: My Somewhat Messy Journey to Purpose, Peace and Joy, may wonder, “oh dear, she still didn’t get her act together.” What a hypocritical writer!

But, I have to admit that this year, I am truly feeling a bit more grounded, more in control, more honest with my intents for 2016. While surfing the net, which I seem to have plenty of time to do, or opening up email newsletters from wellness blogs, headlines like New Year New You keep popping up.

Lose weight, stop eating sugar, find your dream job, feel your best, be the perfect mom.

Come on, who are we kidding!?

I’m not changing who I am this year. And, if I set resolutions (even 2 weeks late), I am only setting myself up for failure and disappointment. Lets admit it now, I will do my best to eat better, to cook more at home, to exercise regularly, to lose weight, to support my friends and family, to spend less money, to make more money, to grow my company, to promote my book, to meditate daily, to read more, etc! And I will make progress on some of these and totally fail at others.

My resolution is to give myself a break, to take one step at a time, to strive for change to lead a healthier, happier, more connected and more purposeful life. (My definition of Living with Intent.) And when I waver from the path – that messy journey – I will take a deep breath, indulge in my messiness for a while, and then reaffirm why I want to make changes.

A Holiday Wish for You from Your Intent Family

Our holiday wish for you this year? That you would…

INCUBATE. Give yourself the time to sit and be still. Listen and wait to hear.

NOTICE the intents and dreams that have been residing in your heart and mind. Give them honest consideration rather than rush to disregard.

TRUST yourself.  Trust the words of encouragement and wisdom from the important people in your life.

EXPRESS those hopes and dreams. Be brave enough to write them down, share them, speak life into them.

NURTURE those hopes and dreams. It’s going to require time. It’s going to mean saying no to other good things to make space and time for something great. A little sunshine. A little water. A lot of time.

TAKE ACTION when it’s time to move. You have to be watching and you have to be ready for when that moment arrives and maybe that moment is right now. What is more worthwhile than taking a risk on something important to you?

So take a moment to sit.
Don’t worry about the whole process at once.
Start with time to incubate.
Wishing you all the best and a season of growth in the new year!

In the Now: Words of Wisdom from Eckhart Tolle

In Living with Intent, Mallika Chopra shares her story of meeting with author Eckhart Tolle. After months of scheduling to sit down with the famed spiritual thinker, Mallika found herself flying to San Francisco for a fifteen minute appointment. Her father Deepak reminded her that Tolle was always “in the now” and when she watched the minutes tick away into her interview as he asked them to listen to the distant bells ringing, she found the plans made for her fifteen minutes were better set aside so as to be in the now as well.

Let’s take a two minute pause to stop and consider kindness.
If you Google “kindness” , you’ll get responses like

“the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate.”

If you Google “friendly“, you’ll get all sorts of synonyms like communicative, approachable, easygoing, unreserved, benevolent. While those are words we can understand in relation to other people, they are not always things we think to extend to ourselves. Are we being a friend to ourselves before we try to be a friend to someone else? Are we showing kindness to ourselves in the same way we know other’s hope to receive?

My Birthday – Setting Intents for 44!

Tomorrow, July 24, is my birthday. I will officially, technically, be in my mid-40s.

At 43, I completed and released my 3rd book, Living With Intent: My Somewhat Messy Journey to Purpose, Peace and Joy. In the process I made some significant steps to bring more balance and joy into my life – all of which can be read in my book! And if you want to give me a birthday present go ahead and buy it for yourself or a friend – Ha Ha! 🙂

Many people ask me if I am in a better place after writing the book. I can categorically say yes! I am happy and healthy and feeling fulfilled – a good place to be. I made some major changes in my lifestyle that, while still inconsistent at times, have become part of my daily habits. Meditation has been more regular. Exercise and sugar, well, lets say the journey remains messy.

This morning, my last day of being 43, I had to go to the DMV to renew my license. In my sleep last night, I remembered that I had got a notice two months ago that I had to go before July 24th when it expired, and take an eye test, give my fingerprints, and take a new photo.  I had an hour waiting with nothing to do so started scribbling notes for my intents this year.

Being a Mindful Child: 24 Hours in DC with DC

In my book, Living With Intent, Take Action is an important step in my path to INTENT. The insight for this step came to me when my friend was diagnosed with breast cancer and I realized that the now is the time to live the purposeful and connected life I seek. (And for the many who have asked, the good news is that my friend is in remission.)

Loss has also reminded me to have gratitude and be present with those we love if we have the opportunity to do so. In my 40’s, many people I love have transitioned, and I have seen family and friends lose their parents, spouses, even children, to disease or senseless tragedy. My intent to spend time with loved ones is a priority for me. Continue reading
