Who Knew? Lucky Charms Actually Work

horseshoeAssay: I’ve been thinking a lot lately about superstition.

Superstition is the irrational belief that an object or behavior has the power to influence an outcome, when there’s no logical connection between them.

Most of us aren’t superstitious—but most of us are a littlestitious.

Relying on lucky charms is superstitious, but in fact, it actually works. Researchers have found that people who believe they have luck on their side feel greater “self-efficacy”—the belief that we’re capable of doing what we set out to do—and this belief actually boosts mental and physical performance. Many elite athletes, for instance, are deeply superstitious, and in one study, people who were told that a golf ball “has turned out to be a lucky ball” did  better putting than people who weren’t told that.

Any discussion of superstition reminds me of a perhaps-apocryphal story that I love, about physicist Niels Bohr. Bohr noticed that a friend had a horseshoe mailed above the door, and he asked why. When was told that it brought luck, he asked in astonishment, “Do you really believe in this?” His friend replied, “Oh, I don’t believe in it. But I am told it works even if you don’t believe in it.” (You can watch me tell the story in this video.)

To help herself quit drinking, a friend told me, she explicitly invoked the idea of luck. “I told myself, ‘The lucky parts of my life have been when I wasn’t drinking, so I need to stop drinking to get my luck back.’”

How about you? Do you have a lucky object, lucky ritual, or lucky item that you wear? I have a lucky perfume. I love beautiful smells, but I save one of my favorite perfumes to wear only when I feel like I need some extra luck.

“Affirmations Are B.S.” and Other Things You Shouldn’t Believe

UpwardBy Orion Talmay

“Affirmations? Yeah, whatever… I don’t do that new age B.S.! That’s only good for weak people with no self-confidence! The people I train don’t need that crap!”

I actually heard these words from one of my fitness mentors I look up to. His huge resistance to the idea of affirmations was kind of shocking to me. I, for one, believe in “that stuff”. Does that mean I am weak? Is it all a scam to make us feel better about life? Am I just a hippie dreamer?

In my free-spirited late teens, I read two books that really shaped me. One of them was The Power of Your Subconscious Mind by Dr. Joseph Murphy. Murphy spoke about the power of our thoughts and how they influence what we manifest in our lives:

There is a miraculous curative force in your subconscious that can heal the troubled mind and the broken heart. It can open the prison door of the mind and liberate you. It can free you from all kind of physical and material bondage.

The other book was You Can Heal Your Life by the remarkable Louise Hay. Hay’s philosophy is similar to Murphy’s. In the book she described using positive affirmations to eliminate self-defeating thoughts: “What you choose to think about yourself and about life becomes true for you. And we have unlimited choices about what we can think.” According to Hay, an affirmation is anything we say or think, therefore all of our self-talk is a stream of affirmations. In order to change your life, you must pay attention to your thoughts and choose empowering ones. By choosing thoughts that make you feel good and stating a desirable intention as a daily practice, you are retraining your brain how to think and speak and you are reprogramming your beautiful subconscious mind.

Affirmations are the seeds of your dreams that you plant for later harvesting. By writing your dreams down and affirming them in ink, or vocalizing them out loud, you bring them into the physical realm and one step closer to manifesting. If you say a lie over and over again, won’t you start believing it? If telling a lie can affect you like that, why not tell a good “lie” – one that has the potential to change your life for the better?

Many times when I’ve gone back to read what seemed originally to be “impossible” affirmations, I actually found they had manifested in my life. Who cares if it seems weird and too “outside the norm”? Who wants to be normal anyways? Popular thinking usually turns out to be average thinking. Galileo Galilei was sentenced to spend rest of his life in prison for his ideas. He vocally supported the Copernican hypothesis that the earth is not the center of the solar system, but one of many planets revolving around the sun. Three centuries later he was called the “father of modern science” by Einstein.

When researching this subject, you will find that in this day and age, science is backing “new age” thinking more than ever before.

At the dawn of the twentieth century, the tidy, objective, mechanistic view of the world began to fall apart…scientists began looking into the world within the atomic nucleus, and they were shocked to discover that on the subatomic level, the physical world did not behave at all the way Newton said it should. In fact, the “atom” itself turned out to be a sort of illusion: The closer scientists looked, the less it really appeared to be there…And when our vision of the atom fractured, the foundation of classical physics fractured along with it. Our view of how the world works was in for a radical transformation. – John Assaraf & Murray Smith (The Answer)

Quantum physics nowadays include theories like parallel universes. It’s no longer science fiction that the power of our thoughts affect physical objects and create new realities. No longer are we in an age where meditation sounds “funny.” Today’s science backs up the positive sweeping impact of quieting one’s brain waves into lower frequencies. People are opening up to possibilities in the realm of the unknown.

The ancients knew that space is not empty; it is the origin and memory of all things that exist and have ever existed…[This insight] is now being rediscovered at the cutting edge of the sciences [and is emerging] as a main pillar of the scientific world’s picture of the twenty-first century. This will profoundly change our concept of ourselves and of the world. – Dr. Ervin Laszlo (as quoted in The Answer)

When I train my clients, my rule is: no negative self-talk. “It’s too hard”, “no way can I do it” are being thrown out the window in the first session. I know for a fact that the body reacts to what you tell it. What you affirm feeds your future blueprint. One of my favorite clients once said “OMG, I am so bad at lunges”. So I told her: “Let’s change your self-talk about lunges. I think it would serve you better to instead say that I am getting better and better”. She looked at me frazzled and really forced it out uncomfortably, saying: “I am getting better and better.” Guess what? She did get better and better, AS SHE WAS SAYING IT! She started listening to – and modifying – her self-talk outside of our training sessions and consequently improved on achieving other personal goals.

But affirmations are not enough! If you look at your dirty laundry and say all day long “My laundry is getting cleaner and smells great” nothing will happen… You have to take action. Say you can do it, then do it! Just like saying I am getting better and better, while lunging. Affirmations will put you in the mindset to take action. They will keep you focused on your goals and desires. They will keep your unconscious mind open to all great opportunities around you. Previously you may not have noticed your self-talk if you were not attuned to it; but now that you are aware of its power, you will know to leverage it for positive action.

Please comment below and share your questions, stories, and experiences with affirmations. I would love to hear your thoughts; I greatly appreciate the feedback!

Manifesting 101: How to Create the Life You Want

24-08-10 If I Only Could I'd Make A Deal With GodIn order to manifest that which will bring you fulfillment, joy, purpose and abundance, it is necessary to understand the steps that will allow such things to come into your life with purpose. Take a moment with open mind to view these steps to creating your new bountiful future.

Intentions: You must be fully aware of what it is that you really want. You must have a clear definition. You can not simply say “I want change.” You must be specific what kind of change it is that you seek. If you are not specific you may find that the change which occurs will be all towards a downward spiral. Freeing yourself to be able to say I want positive forward movement in my change will be an incredible empowerment tool for your future success.
Be Mindful: That old expression “garbage in, garbage out” here comes to mind. If you continually take in negative thoughts, surround yourself with friends, or even family who continually tell you there is no way you can over come you will never amount to anything then guess what? You won’t. If you take your intentions to another level, and say I intend to listen to new creative ways to bring success and peace of mind in both my personal and professional life, then you will start to break those old reckless cycles and move forward.
Show Gratitude: I can not stress enough how important it is for you to be thankful for your current situation. This time in your life has brought you to the steps of your greatest accomplishment yet; abundance, creativity, success and boundless positive energy that will push you forward. Once you have been to the very bottom there is no other place to go then up. Be thankful for your failures they will be your inspiration.
Allow Forgiveness: Showing compassion for what has brought you to this time in your life has great meaning. It is the life blood of all of the things in your past that have placed you in a sense of powerlessness or success. Once you make that decision to forgive others where it is possible, or even proper, and then make that leap to forgive yourself and find peace you will be on your way to experiencing who you are truly meant to be. Honesty is paramount here seeking out that which causes you pain, however, is not always an easy task. This may require a professional to speak with one who is caring and understanding and can help teach you ways to deal with these personal issues.
Take Action: Let the new positive thought and energy flow; do not impede forward movement no matter how small it may seem at first. All things are connected. Every time you made a decision; including those times when you really felt like you did not make any type of decision comes into play here. You must be willing to accept the things you have done, and be prepared to make new choices for the future. You are an active participant in your manifestation of your positive future.
Follow Through: Whether you take your first step, or you stumble keep moving don’t quit!!! Know that you are blessed simply because you breathe. Believe in yourself for it will be your greatest asset, and your truest virtue. If you have made a decision to work this plan towards you future success then let me be the first to congratulate you, you have taken your first step towards abundance and peace of mind.

Deepak Chopra: What is Belief and How Does it Shape Reality?

Do our beliefs at all affect the way the world really is, or are they merely projections of our minds? In this episode of “Ask Deepak” on The Chopra Well, Deepak discusses the relationship between belief and reality.

Beliefs are ideas that we hold to be true. They shape our perceptions, attitudes, moods, and how we perceive our reality. Reality is filtered to our consciousness through these beliefs, which in most cases are limiting but have the opportunity to be empowering. Beliefs limit us by defining who we are and what we hold dear. But true empowerment comes from pushing beyond beliefs.

Beyond beliefs, what is left to define us and shape reality? Perhaps we could open out awareness to perceive the world as it is in that instant before we begin assigning meanings and labels. What do you think?

Breathe-See-Feel the Way to Manifesting Your Desires

Grace - 1By Colette Davenport

Lately, I’ve been experiencing the urge to be near the ocean. The ideal for me is a tropical environment with soft brown sugar-like sands, lush towering palm trees through which the ocean breeze whispers mother nature’s secrets, and water so ridiculously clear and azure in color that when I close my eyes that’s what appears on the screen of my eyelids.

Sounds great, right? Well, there are some hurdles I have to overcome before I can get to that tropical paradise. First, I need to save up the money by re-prioritizing my spending.  Instead of indulging, for instance, in things like pedicures and spontaneous shopping trips to Target (you know how this can go!) I’m going to have to put that money into a travel account. Or hey, even better, that fun little piggy-bank I got at Target last week! Next, and this isn’t so much required as it is desired, I want to look and feel fabulous in bikini on the beach. So I am setting a goal to exercise five days a week. My three-days-a-week routine is doing a lovely job of maintaining a physique, but I want to challenge and then reward myself with the holiday. Given all of that, I think eight weeks is a reasonable time-frame to save up and tone up.

Now. Here’s where the real challenge comes into play. I have to choose for the next two months in favor of my intention to float and frolic in the warm waters of the sea. My tendency is to react to the immediate desire, i.e. “Cute piggy-bank!” (flower vase, scarf, etc.) or “Happy hour instead of the gym? Sure why not!” Making conscious choices daily will determine whether I’m sitting seaside this summer or pushing a red shopping cart browsing the beach towel isle.

In an effort to make the daily choices fun and functional, I’ve created the breatheseefeel method, described below. I invite you to join me and use it whenever you’re faced with a decision to indulge in an immediately gratifying activity OR to consciously choose in favor of something you really desire and intend.

First, breathe. Inhale a deep full breath and then exhale slowly, mindfully, and allow for instant conscious awareness. It clears the mind of racing thoughts. It also relieves the near constant “fight or flight” response induced by fear or confusion. It’s kind of like pushing the reset button. I like to imagine the exhale as a down escalator…taking me from the upper floor (my head, that wants something NOW) to the lower floor (my heart, that intends something more meaningful).

Next, see. Visualize yourself successfully reaching your goal or manifesting your intention. Notice the environment. (I did this while writing the first paragraph above.) Observe what you’re doing in that environment. Is it day or night? Who are you sharing the good news or good vibes with? See them, too.

Finally, as you see your intended results come to fruition, feel the positive emotions this success elicits. You know what it feels like to get what you want or succeed at something important so let yourself feel those feelings in advance – I bet it brings a smile to your face! After all, isn’t that what we’re going for when it comes to immediate gratification?

When we breathe, see, and feel, we get present to how the choice before us is either “for or against” our real intentions. In that moment we align our head and heart, our choices and actions so that achieving our goals becomes powerful and pleasurable.

Right then, I’m off to put piggy front and center, depositing (what was going to be) “latte money” in her on my way out the door. And this time I’m choosing the flush of redness in my face from a work out over the red bull’s eye.

Deepak Chopra: 7 Keys to Manifesting Your Desires

The Law of Attraction, manifestation, vision boards… With everything we know about the Universe and consciousness, there must be some way of drawing into our lives the circumstances we desire most. And yet, if it were easy wouldn’t we all be living our ideal lives?

In this episode of “Ask Deepak” on The Chopra Well, Deepak relays the seven key principles to manifesting your desires, and the process may be as easy or as difficult as you choose to see it:

The seven principles are:

  1. See the universe as an extension of yourself
  2. Evolve through the mirror of relationship
  3. Understand that intention has infinite organizing power
  4. Free yourself from emotional turbulence
  5. Harness the masculine and the feminine in your own being
  6. Never ignore a coincidence
  7. Always stay grounded and centered in yourself

Deepak Chopra: What Is Ultimate Reality?

It is an interesting paradox that science finds itself in. Science says that there is an observer-independent reality and you do not need a conscious observer to manifest reality. At the same time without an observer this reality is not testable, so it cannot exist. In this episode of “Ask Deepak” on The Chopra Well, Deepak discusses scientific contradiction of ultimate reality.

In science, anything that is not testable is considered invalid. Science depends on empirical facts based on observations. If we propose an observer-independent reality, we must realize that an observer-independent reality is not testable. So according to the current principles of science, we cannot say it exists. A scientific conclusion would be that an observer-independent reality does not exist. But is this really the case?

3 Questions to Ask Yourself Before the End of ANY Relationship

Screen Shot 2013-07-02 at 4.22.24 PMWhen any relationship ends it can be one of the most painful things you experience in life.

A heartbreak.

Change is a part of life. Nothing lasts forever even the best things will one day come to an end. As you accept this you can focus on fully experiencing and appreciating each relationship whilst it is in your life. Ultimately there is no end to a relationship, the form simply shifts into something new. The real courage is to let go and allow the highest expression that is seeking to happen. The real courage is your willingness to let go of what you currently have so you can create something new. The real courage is to love so fully that if a relationship ends you have no regrets.

You attract into your life who you are. And those you attract are manifestations of your own state of consciousness at that particular time. They are mirrors. As you grow and your consciousness expands those in your life must either grow with you or the nature of your relationship will inevitably shift. Just because the form of your relationship needs to change doesn’t mean the love needs to go away.

We often think that if a relationship ends the love needs to stop. When in fact to stay in a relationship that no longer feels right is in fact not loving. To honor your authentic hearts truth is the most loving thing you can do. In doing this you honor those around you too. Dare to find the most authentic form of relating that can serve both you and the other person to love even more fully. So rather than holding onto the way a relationship was in the past feel what is most true now and what it is seeking to be today. To stay in a relationship that is not truly fulfilling in the present is to be in a dead relationship. The relationship is a museum rather than a living inspiration.

Try asking yourself this, “If I met this person today would I be in a relationship with them today?” Be honest.

When you first meet someone, whether a romantic relationship, friend or business partner, you gravitate to each other because you were a vibrational match. As you grow, so long as you both keep growing in the same direction at a similar pace, you can keep evolving your relationship. But if you do not there might come a point where you no longer are a fit.

As two people evolve, if you grow in different directions that no longer feels right for you both, it will put pressure on the way the relationship is currently set up. It is important to remember that just because a relationship ends or changes form it isn’t bad. It just may no longer be a vibrational match.

If you are feeling a current relationship is not working ask yourself:

  1. Does this relationship inspire me to be more of who I authentically am?
  2. Do we inspire each other to grow, expand and evolve as souls?
  3. What is the lesson that this person/relationship was brought into my life to teach me.

When you let go of the old relationships you create the space for the new ones to show up. Trust that following your heart and truth will lead you to exactly where you are meant to be for your highest good and all concerned. Trust that the universe is abundant and will bring about your highest good. Trust that the Love which is available is infinite.

You are Love.

All forms change.

Only Love is real.

Confessions of a Former Vision Board Junkie

2011 Vision Board #1: Main Themes for the Year

By Sarah Anne Stewart

For a good portion of my life, I was a Vision Board junkie.

I wrote goals and affirmations, sketched pictures, snapped photos, and pasted dozens of magazine pictures onto huge, intricately color-coded collages. My “vision of the future” had to be precise, and represent all the things I was determined to attract. How else would I get from here to there, and attract everything I desired to experience in this journey of life?

Dozens of mainstream media writers and authors focus on this global phenomenon: the belief that thoughts become things, and only through thinking of what we want can we attract it into our lives. I agree but disagree. Let me explain:

On average, we think 70,000 thoughts a day. This in and of itself can pose some serious challenges. Unless you are the Dalai Lama, personally taking inventory of, managing, and controlling every thought is near impossible. Not to mention your subconscious, which is constantly active too.

That’s where meditation comes in. To manifest effortlessly, you actually have to STOP thinking.

Before learning meditation, I did seem to manifest things, but not effortlessly. There were bumps in the process and the results were less specific than I imagined. I manifested with huge delays in time, or after completely forgetting something tucked under dozens of other images at the back of my vision board.

About a year and a half ago, I learned–really learned–to stop thinking, and I now practice meditation every single day. Through my daily meditations, I have manifested things into my life faster and easier than ever before. I am sure you’re thinking, “Maybe you just had a lot of good karma that came your way?” But I truly believe it is much more than that.

Here’s why: For those precious minutes every day, you are free to have complete trust in the power of the Universe and what it can bring forth in your life. Meditation connects you to Source–the Universal power that we are all connected to. All those images you desire are no longer necessary for happiness. When we are connected to Source, we are experiencing all that was, is, and will be. You create a place of detachment from all earthly and material things. In this place there is no need.

Whether you feel gratitude or attachment, it will ultimately affect your ability to manifest. When you are attached to something, you fear its loss. As a result, you push it away. Meditation removes the fear, shifting you back to a place of love and gratitude.

It is extremely difficult to have gratitude for things we don’t yet have. Meditation gets us there without the obstacles of our own thought patterns. There is no battle with who-what-where-when-or-how it will happen. We are free of worries and fear-based thoughts. When we are in a feeling of “need” or “I have to have,” we are sending a vibration to the Universe, which responds with more “need.”  As your mind tries to determine how your desires will manifest, it also pushes them farther and farther away. You are sending a message that your desires do not exist, and from this place of lacking, you cannot attract what you want.

It is also much easier to have a still, quiet mind, than to have pure, positive thoughts every second. In this stillness we also experience satisfaction, gratitude, and appreciation without doing, thinking, or having anything. Meditation also offers a sense of peace with everything and everyone that opposes you so you can come into alignment with the solutions to your desires. And more importantly, all those images you desire are no longer necessary for happiness. From this place of gratitude you are now sending a vibration that everything you need already exists in your life. Out of this feeling of pure gratitude, our lives can be manifested.

The practice of meditation most importantly helps train the mind to be in the present moment, leaving no need to control our 70,000 thoughts a day. When you are in the present moment, your goals, dreams, and desires can manifest because you are no longer thinking about them. Instead, you are only thinking about what is in front of you at that very moment.

The essence of manifesting your desires through meditation can be summed up in a quote from the teachings of Ester Hick’s, “[w]hen you quiet your mind you stop thought; when you stop thought you stop resistance; when you stop resistance you are in a state of allowing.”  So yes, focus on what you want. Cut images out of magazines, then put them away, and let daily meditation connect and align you to Source to actually bring the things you want into your life. When your dreams become a reality, remember to bless everything you attract with gratitude.

A Meditation for Manifesting

url-2In this video I teach a Kundalini meditation called Purify the Subtle Body. The subtle body, is the part of us which attracts opportunities, brings us good news and attracts positivity towards us. This meditation strengthens your subtle body so that you become a magnet for miracles. Practicing this meditation will make you shine bright and deepen your connection to the Universe.

In the video I breakdown the meditation and guide you along with the music. If you need further clarification please see the instructions below. Feel free to leave questions or remarks in the comments below.

Mudra: Sitting in easy pose (cross legged) with a straight spine, place the arms down by the sides, backs of the palms on the ground next to the sides of the body.

Movement: As you inhale, raise the arms over the head, until the two palms overlap a few inches above the your head (known as the tenth gate). The right hand will be a few inches above the head. The left palm will lie flat on top of the back of the right hand. The thumbs do NOT touch. (Note: Yogi Bhajan very specifically keeps the thumbs separated when the hands overlap over the top of the head.)

Breath: Make your mouth into an “O.” Inhale through the “O” as you raise the arms over the head, and exhale through the “O” as you lower the hands back down to the ground.

Chant: The “Tantric Har” music which is played in the video. On the first “Har” raise your arms up. On the second “Har” your arms go down. Continue in this rhythmic movement. Pull in on the navel and the diaphragm as you do the movement.

Time: If you’re new to Kundalini meditation begin with 3 minutes. If you want to go big then practice this meditation for 11 minutes a day.

End: Inhale deeply. Immediately interlace the hands over the head, elbows straight, and begin to deeply stretch the body right to left, and left to right, without letting go of the hands.

Continue as you hold the breath for 15 seconds. Exhale. Repeat 3 times total. Relax.
