Pennies From Heaven

They say when an angel misses you, they toss a penny down from heaven. Sadly, not everyone knows how much truth there is in this old adage.

Spirit has many interesting ways to communicate with us, and always on a very personal level. Your spiritual signs and signals can range from the truly spectacular to the very mundane. And sometimes they can be found in the most unusual places, or when they are least expected. Two of the most commonly sighted phenomena are coins or ‘pennies’, as well as feathers. Depending on your personal belief system, these items are left around for us by loved ones, angels, or animal and spirit guides.

No matter where you believe your signs may be coming from, they are most certainly meant especially for you, and they always have a sincere and personal meaning, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant they may appear to be.

So, don’t pass by that penny, When you’re feeling blue. It may be a penny from heaven, that an Angel’s tossed to you – Charles Marshburn

Of course, many skeptics doubt that these phenomena exist, and it is often discounted as mere superstition or urban myth. I have, however, had several powerful personal experiences of such signs over the years, and I also hear frequent reports from friends and clients who experience the same thing. Spirit has indeed taught me some very valuable lessons through different signs and signals, and these personal, first-hand experiences contradict the most one-dimensional or misguided opinion of any skeptic.

A dear friend and client recently received very compelling confirmation of the signs she had been questioning for years.* She is currently in the midst of a major life transition and a personal transformation. For quite some time now we have been discussing the signs she has been receiving in the form of popular songs. She keeps hearing them: over the radio, in the gym and in the shopping mall. Once she even heard it on the phone, after she was placed on hold by a call centre. The signs keep coming consistently; every time she asks for them, she receives them. But the doubt secretly creeps back into her mind soon after. What if it was just her imagination?

Two days ago she messaged me, wanting to know if the latest incident was another sign. There is a specific song she has always associated with a certain special person in her life, for a very particular reason. She had now heard this song on three separate occasions at very significant moments. Each time it happened she was either with this person, or she was specifically thinking of him, or she was asking for a sign about him.

When suffering comes, we yearn for some sign from God, forgetting we have just had one – Mignon McLaughlin

I explained to her that we sometimes receive the same signs more than once, in order to overcome our doubt or fear. In her case she was getting her signs in three’s. But I also knew that she had to see proof of this for herself, before she would feel truly content. I therefore suggested she ask for a confirmation of the fact that important signs come to her in three’s.

The answer came sooner than anticipated. She was in a public place when she received my response. She did not even have to ask for confirmation. The minute she opened my text message on her cellphone, even before she had finished reading all of it, she discovered three pennies on a seat she was about to sit down on.

She immediately sent me the news and I then assured her that pennies are a well-known sign for many people all over the world. I also urged her to keep the pennies in a safe place and have another look at them later, because sometimes the dates or other engravings on them also have special meanings.

The next day I received a follow-up: “Thanks Anthon! You wouldn’t believe this, but later yesterday I saw three feathers. Well, actually four, I saw one at first and did a double take – but dismissed it, then an hour or so later saw a cluster of three feathers together on the floor.”

The angels are so enamored of the language that is spoken in heaven that they will not distort their lips with the hissing and unmusical dialects of men, but speak their own, whether there be any who understand it or not – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Messages from the spiritual realm are potentially life-changing, but they so often pass us by, unnoticed, mostly because of our lack of awareness. In fact, some of us are so stubborn or oblivious to our metaphysical reality that we first have to receive a pebble, then a rock and finally a ton of bricks, before we eventually sit up and pay attention! First there is a message, then a lesson and finally comes the crisis.

If you have never experienced the wonder of witnessing the effect of such miraculous signs and signals in your life, I highly recommend that you consider giving it a shot. What do you stand to lose? All you need to do is heighten your awareness and increase your consciousness. Don’t allow yourself to let your mystical reminders and spiritual signposts pass you by forever.

Signs and signals from the spiritual realm always have a purpose. Most often they are important guideposts or ‘traffic signs’ along our life path, confirming our choices, decisions and actions. Sometimes we receive these messages to console us in times of distress or sadness, while at other times they come as warnings, urging us to proceed with caution.

Reading your special signs and signals is your divine right, and a basic skill that anyone can develop. Some gurus would have you believe that this is a complex art or science, or that it requires special psychic abilities or years of study and practice. The truth is that this is a blessing freely available to all of us, regardless of whom we are or what we believe in. All you need to do is ask, and it will be given.

The whole visible universe is but a storehouse of images and signs to which the imagination will give a relative place and value; it is a sort of pasture which the imagination must digest and transform – Charles Baudelaire

The best way to start reading signs is by simply becoming more aware. Take more notice of the small wonders that happen in the world around you every day. Look out for patterns and synchronicities, because there are no ‘coincidences’ in life. Everything happens for a reason; there are no windfalls, only godsends.

Soon you will begin to discover your unique set of personal symbols and patterns. Your special signs could come in the form of dreams, colors, words, numbers, sounds, songs, computer messages, clouds, images, animals, people, places or specific objects, like coins and feathers. They could also come in a certain order or they may be repeated a certain number of times. The list of possibilities and combinations is truly endless. It is also very different for each individual, depending on your belief system, as well as your cultural background and your unique personality and interests.

Always keep your expectations simple and don’t expect weird riddles or complex messages. The message is always very clear and direct. The intention is after all to communicate and guide, not to confuse, frighten or mislead you. Also, use some common sense. If you never listen to the radio, you certainly cannot expect it to become a conduit for spiritual communication. Your signs will show up in accessible ways that complement your lifestyle, or match your personal outlook. All you need to do is become more aware and be open to the process.

Look after the pennies, and the pounds will take care of themselves – English Proverb

Finally, we need to be thankful for every sign or message we receive. Express your gratitude by being kind to yourself and others, and show your appreciation by caring for all living creatures, as well as our magnificent planet. Count each and every blessing.

The Universe is an abundant and interactive place of wonder and magic; it is ready and waiting to respond to your needs. You can heal your life and make all your wishes come true. Spirit wants the opportunity to guide you and protect you on your journey through life.

Acknowledge your higher self and learn to trust your intuition. You have inside of you a deep well of wisdom and you are connected to everything in the Universe. You are part of an infinite and ever-expanding grid of spiritual consciousness.

Use your signs and godsends to re-design your life and create the destiny you truly want; learn to apply your divine ‘early warning system’ to avoid unnecessary obstacles and setbacks along the way. All you need to do is ask. Reclaim what is rightfully yours.

Ol’ Boogeyman Still Comin’ To Getcha?

BoogeymanIn my line of work there is often an unhealthy obsession with the concept of evil. It appears we are simply not able to rid ourselves of this ‘thing’ we seem to have for the boogeyman (here in my country known as the tokoloshe).

Just the other day I was listening to a radio psychic scaring the living daylights out of his unsuspecting caller. She just wanted some career advice, but instead he was hell-bent on convincing her that her home was infested with evil entities. His charming co-host also jumped in to offer some old-wives’ cures for getting rid of all the demonic forces. Truth be told, the only disturbance I was picking up on was the fact that the poor, freaked out woman would not be getting much sleep for weeks!

Now, don’t get me wrong. The struggle between good and evil is very, very real. It is a fundamental component of the human condition. It is also the basis of all Creation. It stems from the duality found in every important aspect of our expanding Universe: dark versus light, life versus death, night versus day. Light needs the presence of darkness to be truly visible and meaningful.

A belief in a supernatural source of evil is not necessary; men alone are quite capable of every wickedness –  Joseph Conrad

The co-existence of good and evil is also the basis for an inner conflict that each of us have to resolve in this lifetime. It is part of the reason why we are here. Both good and evil therefore do serve a purpose in the greater scheme of things. No doubt about that. But blaming the spiritual realm for the darkness of men is my idea of heresy and blasphemy.

Our morbid fascination with all things dark is as old as the hills, but it is still very much de rigueur. Just the fact that psychics and mediums are today still being accused of doing the devil’s work is sufficient proof in itself. In many religious circles ‘fire and brimstone’ remains the height of fashion. Not to mention the latest 2012 doomsday prophecies, conspiracy theories and apocalyptic visions of evil forces, undercover aliens and secret societies; all hype eagerly spread by fear-mongers, spin doctors and social entrepreneurs.

But those are the most obvious kinds of evil mania. What truly amazes me about our obsession with all things evil is that it is not something you only find in traditional churches or conservative circles. No, some truly gifted, spiritually aware and highly intuitive people, with whom I share many beliefs and blessings, are also fanatic about finding evil spirits, curses and dark entities under their beds, inside their closets …and deep-down in the purses and wallets of their clients.

The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance – Socrates

Yesterday a wonderful client called me, devastated and in tears. She had been persuaded by a well-meaning friend to “try out” another psychic she knows of… just for fun. The self-proclaimed ’spiritual advisor’ had a field day predicting doom and gloom for her current relationship and warned her that another woman was doing magick to steal her man away. She also offered to do spell work for her to fix the problem, to the tune of $400! Meanwhile my client’s love life is perfectly on track and they are in fact a very happy couple. How dare someone mess with the lives of others out of sheer greed? It truly disgusts me. May God have mercy on her soul.

It is deeply disappointing that many who share in the collective consciousness appear to be obsessing about evil entities and dark forces all of the time. In fact, they are so busy doing this that they hardly have any time or energy left to be co-creators in our spiritual evolution. They seem to miss the point that evil is about regression, destruction and reversing into the past. Evil is the antithesis of creation and expansion, and they seem to forget that what they focus on, sadly, does become their reality.

The good versus evil ‘battle’ has been waged one way or another since the dawn of civilization. It is an ancient archetype that is one of the most recognizable themes in literature and the arts. Let’s face it; ‘good guys versus bad guys’ is the stuff that bestsellers and box office hits are made of.

Eternal good is eternal becoming or eternally moving forward to greater life. Eternal evil is to cease becoming and “to be” that which was in the past – JJ Dewey

I guess it therefore comes as no surprise that some spiritual seekers are forever obsessing about the evil they fear may be creeping up on them. One only has to tune in to a few podcasts, or watch the latest online videos, to witness the spiritual community’s fixation on everything evil. Indeed, fundamentalism is not only found among the religious and the dogmatic. Some of the ‘spiritually enlightened’ and ‘intuitively evolved’ seem to insist on clinging to medieval concepts and out-dated superstitions.

Instead of being fully devoted to unconditional love, kindness, generosity, selflessness and the greater good, much energy, time and money is being spent every day fighting evil entities and keeping the ‘darkness’ and its ‘extremely powerful forces’ at bay. Potions, spells and candles are actually the very products that keep scam psychics and fake mediums in business. All this while the true battle of Armageddon is being fought right here under our noses, in the streets in front of our houses.

There is no dominating source of evil, because if there was, we would not exist, nature would not exist and neither would the Universe. It is counter-productive to assign so much influence and power to something that is in fact just vast emptiness, non-entity and anti-matter.

To rid ourselves of our shadows – who we are – we must step into either total light or total darkness. Goodness and evil – Jeremy P. Johnson

I have often said, and will say it again, if you want to know true evil just switch on the evening news. If you are curious to see the real face of Satan, you will find him lurking on the cover of celebrity magazines, in newspapers and on political campaign posters. The battle between good and evil is not being fought in the spiritual realm. Spirit knows no anger, envy, fear, violence or hatred. The real war is happening in mundane places, like the television set in your parlor or at your child’s school.

If you want to find demons, shadow people or anti-Christs, look for them in our educational institutions, communities, churches and governments. If you truly want to find evil incarnate, seek it among the school bullies in our midst, those who drive their peers to suicide or post vile online jokes about their deaths.

Stop hunting ghosts, witches, psychic vampires and energy thieves, and rather expose the narcissists among us who dominate, dictate and destroy so many relationships, families, careers and lives – devoid of empathy and compassion. Search also the boardrooms, public offices and parliaments. There you will find among our leaders and kings many ego-maniacs who abuse their power, corrupt their economy and violate the basic human rights of their people, while they wage senseless wars on their critics and each other.

It is a man’s own mind, not his enemy or foe, that lures him to evil ways – Buddha

Evil, darkness, threat and fear are not spiritual forces… they are the evil creations of man. JJ Dewey writes that “all forces, powers, and energies are neither good nor evil in themselves. They are completely neutral, but only become good or evil when they are intelligently directed.” He also states that “all energies and creations vibrating in their pure state are good.” And that is the whole point. Focusing so much of our thoughts, feelings and intentions on evil, instead of that which is good, is counter-productive and contrary to our Divine Purpose. We are here to serve each other and grow, expand and become, not to cast an exaggerated, ominous shadow over all that is potentially good in the world.

The spiritual realm is much like the natural world. It is in essence breathtakingly perfect, completely harmonious and utterly flawless. I have yet to meet an evil animal or discover a satanic plant. The only evil I have ever witnessed among plants and animals are the scars left on them by the inhumane, dark deeds of men. It is certainly not the devil who is trashing the environment, abusing the animal kingdom or trampling the hearts of loving women and breaking the spirits of brave men.

The Divine Light that you and I come from, and will return to one day, knows no evil and does not recognize the power of these shadows that some so willingly fear and follow. Believing in the supremacy of evil entities and dark beings implies that we all come from a spiritual place of imperfection. It suggests that the Divine Source is somehow diseased, that Creation is riddled with flaws and falsehoods that dwell among us. And, worst of all, that we are so far superior in our human state that we alone are capable of fixing this broken, dysfunctional or chaotic spiritual mess.

The reason our definition of good and evil changes over the ages is because our capacity to understand and experience freedom changes – JJ Dewey

I realize that for some it must be fun to indulge in this paranormal soap opera, but most of us simply don’t have the time, or the inclination. We know we have much work to do, gifts to offer, blessings to share. We are the Wounded Healers, the Empaths, the Shamans, the Indigo Children, the Starseeds, and the Lightworkers. We speak to the Angels, listen to our Spirit Guides and trust in the guidance of our Ancestors, Ascended Masters and Loved Ones. We fight true evil by saving the planet and healing humanity, by drying one tear at a time.

We have no need for spells, talismans or obsessive-compulsive psychic defenses, for we are surrounded by the everlasting and indestructible shields of Love, Peace and Harmony. The phenomenal power of our Spiritual Heritage surges through our being every moment of every day. We are illuminated by the Divine; there is much Light around us.

The spiritual evolution of mankind is our ultimate aim, our Divine duty. As we continue to expand the Universe, this dazzling, bright Light we carry will continue to emanate from us with much Glory. And we know that there shall come a time when there will be no more evil among men. And we shall know that all is Good.

A Legacy of Love: Leaving the Earth a Better Place

From our first breath here to our very last, we will find infinite opportunities to influence our environment for the better.

We inherit this great planet from our parents and from the generations that came before. Then, in concert with the surrounding culture, our elders teach us how to care for the land and the sea, ourselves and each other. They model ways of being in relationship with every other expression of life on earth. But whether they act with care or carelessness, compassion or cruelty, generosity or greed, we have the ability to choose our own individual way of relating with
the planet and her inhabitants. From our first breath here to our very last, we will find infinite opportunities to influence our environment for the better. We can decide now to act with intention in order to leave this amazing planet brighter and more beautiful than when we arrived.

If we enjoy environmental activism, we might feel moved to clean up beaches or to plant trees. But, we need not feel limited in our ability to contribute positively. There are many ways to leave a legacy of love. We might begin by radiating affirmative thoughts and feelings about how magnificent the earth truly is. We might create and tend a special garden, one that provides an abundance of food and herbs for ourselves and our loved ones. Or we might create a garden filled with sweet smelling flowers to uplift our hearts. We might even honor the earth simply by trying to be the best person we can be while we are here. Such good will can have a domino effect, inspiring others to contribute in their own way as well.

We spend our lifetimes being nourished and enlivened by the rain, sun, soil and wind. Our experience is blessed by other living beings, from plants to insects to birds and humans. We receive so much; giving back just naturally feels good. When we live our lives with intention of leaving this temporary home a better place for generations to come, we are perhaps leaving behind the best gift of all.

What Mother Nature Is Saying About Us

Recently the Gallup Organization released its findings about public opinion on global warming. It’s not good news for activists. Fully 48% of respondents believe that the threat of climate change is exaggerated, up from 31% in 1999. In keeping with this wishful thinking, more Americans believe that scientists have greater doubts about climate change (not true) while fewer Americans think that the effects of global warming are already being felt. In sum, you can say that fewer Americans are worried about the environment when it really counts.

You can mark this down to crisis fatigue. We certainly are feeling that abut the Gulf oil spill, where a general sense of gloom prevails over viable calls to action. Is the whole planet going to be like that one day, a state of perpetual disaster? Or are we seeing ourselves in Nature’s mirror? If it is the latter — and I think it is — we don’t have to feel so paralyzed (or stick our heads in the sand, which is what the Gallup data comes down to).

For centuries human beings looked at Nature as basically a source of endless abundance. The Bible told the Judeo-Christian world that God had provided this outpouring out of love for his children. An ethical standard was built in, too. We were supposed to be the stewards of Nature, taking care of it as it provided for us. What did this say about human nature? That we were the favored species in Creation, that all other creatures were lesser, and that we had every reason to be optimistic about the future. Nature, like God, was infinite in its ability to sustain us.

Today all those beliefs have been seriously eroded. Few people seriously connect the ecology with a divine creation. The ecology is a vast system governed by finite laws. Rather than acting as stewards, we ruthlessly plunder the limited resources that remain. Even the threat of outright catastrophe doesn’t cause us to change our ways. Yet as we grab more and more from the feast table, people are not in a festive mood. They feel quite depressed and anxious about Nature. (In relation to the Gulf oil spill, for example, about half of Americans believe that the affected beaches will never return to their former clean state, while almost 60% believe that the damaged animal populations will never return to their old numbers.) Clearly, the present state of belief can’t be endured forever — neverending gloom can only lead to more numbness, denial, and helplessness.

The question, then, is whether a new set of beliefs about Nature can emerge? The old religious-based values are not going to return. The only answer is to look in the mirror again and see who we really are. If we don’t act like privileged children of God or helpless gluttons on a desperate feeding frenzy, human beings will always be creative. Creative enough to pursue the next great innovation. We are also capable of empathy, bonded at a basic level, gifted with foreknowledge of the future, and imbued with love of the natural world. Seeing those things in the mirror isn’t hard. But will these positive qualities amount to a new belief system?

Until that question is answered, halfway measures will prove futile. Recycling, alternative energy sources, and reduced carbon footprints are catching on, but gradually and generally only in the developed world. Even there, political resistance is firmly entrenched. There are too many corporations who won’t sacrifice today’s profits to save the planet in decades to come, and too many citizens with comfortable lifestyles they want to protect, whatever may happen to the next generation. With that in mind, many environmental scientists have privately decided that climate change is inevitable. Rather than trying to stop it and meeting with failure, it’s wiser, they believe, to start adapting to a more crowded, polluted, grossly imbalanced ecosystem.

Let’s accept this stark view if we must, using it not for defeatism but as motivation. Bad news has given rise to sudden leaps of creativity before. Our new belief system has to begin there. If we look into the mirror and see endless creativity, that gives rise to new optimism. But more than that, it gives us a reason to educate as much of the world’s population as possible. More brains means more chances of finding a solution. Instead of seeing China and India as rivals, we need to see them as a great source for new creative minds.

That adds the element of bonding. We are all in this together; therefore, wars and nationalism are luxuries we can no longer afford. The new belief system would then encourage us to put maximum funds into research and development to find technologies that can accomplish global results, such as removing greenhouse gases from the atmosphere and cleaning up the world’s oceans.

Some might say that such a belief system is already being born — I think they’re right — but that there’s not enough time left and not enough willpower to accomplish global tasks. If that’s true, it’s because the last element of the new belief system is lacking: a sense of the sacred. In the past, when human beings looked in the mirror of Nature, they saw God as sacred, or not, but never themselves as sacred. But there is no conception of the future that will sustain us until we realize that sacredness is either human or it is nonexistent.

I realize that this notion runs counter to what people now see in the mirror. They see the image of despoilers; they fear that humanity is a cancer spreading across the planet, endangering the existence of all other creatures. But at the same time we are masters of our own evolution. The essence of humanity lies there. We define ourselves, and since the fund of the world’s wisdom traditions is rich in experiences of higher evolution — by which I mean genuine experiences of God consciousness and unity with the divine —only by making an evolutionary leap can we sustain ourselves. The material aspect of climate change is secondary. Our perception of ourselves is primary. We must stop adding secular sins to our roster of bad deeds and start adding secular spirituality. It’s a funny phrase, but secular spirituality simply means being spiritual in oneself, without the need for external dogmas and organized faiths.

In the sacredness of the self is the redemption of the world, both as an ecosystem and as a home for human aspirations. There are many paths to achieve such a sense of the sacred. This space is too small for me to outline them. I only wanted to show that we aren’t living in an either/or situation. It’s not either God or giving up on ourselves. Finding God within ourselves offers a new way. Every step on that path reduces our destructive effect on Nature and brings us closer to loving union with her.

A prayer for the Gulf

Below is a beautiful meditation/prayer for healing in the Gulf of Mexico. I found it on Pam Younghans blog and felt moved to share not only the prayer but also her words of encouragement.

The prayer is from "… Dr. Masaru Emoto, who many of you will recognize as the scientist from Japan who has done all the research and publications about the characteristics of water. Among other things, his research reveals that water physically responds to emotions.

Michael Jackson recites “Planet Earth”

Dear Friends,

On the 1 year anniversary of Michael’s death I would like to share with you a poem I co-wrote with him entitled “Planet Earth” which was published in his book “Dancing the Dream.” This poem is particularly prescient given the  destruction of the eco-system.

Love,
Deepak

Planet Earth, my home, my place
A capricious anomaly in the sea of space
Planet Earth, are you just
Floating by, a cloud of dust
A minor globe about to bust
A piece of metal bound to rust
A speck of matter in a mindless void
A lonely spaceship, a large asteroid

Cold as a rock without a hue
Held together with a bit of glue
Something tells me this isn’t true
You are my sweetheart, soft and blue
Do you care, have you a part
In the deepest emotions of my own heart
Tender with breezes, caressing and whole
Alive with music, haunting my soul.

In my veins I’ve felt the mystery
Of corridors of time, books of history
Life songs of ages throbbing in my blood
Have danced the rhythm of the tide and flood
Your misty clouds, your electric storm

Were turbulent tempests in my own form
I’ve licked the salt, the bitter, the sweet
Of every encounter, of passion, of heat
Your riotous color, your fragrance, your taste
Have thrilled my senses beyond all haste
In your beauty I’ve known the how
Of timeless bliss, this moment of now.

Insatiable Appetites: When is enough, enough?

Generally speaking, I am an optimist. My glass is half full, and I truly live in a state of gratitude for all that I do have. I am a happy person, living the rules of happiness. Nevertheless, I am not a happy idiot.

There are some very troubling facts circulating out there about our environment that many people seem to be glazing over, not terribly interested in and/or think that these facts just can’t be real. Denial is a wonderful thing.

I was so troubled by the way we are treating our precious Earth and ourselves that I sought out Elizabeth Lesser, co-founder and senior adviser of Omega Institute for Holistic Studies (the largest adult center in the United States focusing on health, wellness, spirituality and creativity), and author of Broken Open: How Difficult Times Can Help Us Grow and A Seeker’s Guide: Making Your Life a Spiritual Adventure, hoping that she might help me make sense of our collective consciousness or unconsciousness, depending on how you look at it, and to learn about the progress that Omega is making in the field of sustainability.

What gives? Are we human beings on a self-destruct mission? Are we so attached to large piles of money, big houses, big cars and large portions that we can’t see the forest from the trees? How much longer can we go on this way without imploding?

Here follow the facts, followed by the highlights of my conversation with Elizabeth Lesser.

The Hard Facts

The majority of the world’s scientific experts agree: the environment is in trouble. The amount of carbon dioxide being pumped into the atmosphere annually will have catastrophic effects on the earth’s climate. As global warming escalates, more extreme weather patterns will emerge.

In addition, World Bank reports that 80 countries are already experiencing water shortages. The worldwide demand for water doubles every 21 years. As the population increases and our cities grow, our water supply simply cannot keep up with this demand.

Action is needed now. The Omega Center for Sustainable Living (OCSL), a state of the art education center and natural waste-water treatment facility leads the way.

Slated to come online in summer 2009, the "Eco Machine" will treat more than 5 million gallons of waste-water annually. The OCSL will offer visitors a direct experience with the most recent, cutting-edge technologies in green building and sustainable living, and will show, in an experiential, accessible way, how we can move forward together.

Omega is reaching out to the world, reconnecting people to their every day decisions that impact on the environment, but is the world ready to listen?

Planet Earth: Difficult Times, Insatiable Appetites, Doomed?
a conversation with Elizabeth Lesser, co-founder of Omega Institute for Holistic Studies

Water: Wars Will Be Fought

JT: Elizabeth, thank you so much for taking the time to talk to me today about Omega’s leadership role in environmental sustainability and spiritual fulfillment.

EL: Happy to be here. We at Omega have been working on personal transformation and sustainability since 1976, our beginnings. The Omega Center for Sustainable Living continues this tradition. It gives me great pleasure to know that the world is beginning to wake up.

We are saving what is going to be the most precious resource on earth — water. With global warming and the population explosion, people say that water is going to be the most valuable resource in 20 to 50 years. Oil has always been thought of as the traditional cause of war in the Middle East, but the water wars will be far worse.

JT: The fact that water scarcity already exists in California and Arizona and that the Colorado River shows up dry in Mexico is terrifying. Admittedly, I am only first coming to grips with the magnitude of the problem. Are people ‘getting it’ enough to make real and lasting lifestyle changes … before it’s too late?

EL: No. Not enough people are getting it, but that doesn’t mean that they won’t get it in the future. I think that everyone here on Earth is at different levels of personal evolution; learning what they need to learn in this lifetime. We are an evolutionary work in progress, but we haven’t learned the meaning of "enough."

Insatiable Appetites: Filling the Empty Void

JT: So interesting that you use the world, "enough." As a Weight Loss Coach, the concept of "enough" often surfaces in the guise of food. What does it mean to be full, to be satiated? When is enough, enough?

EL: You could draw a parallel. It’s the same in the environmental issue. We human beings are pretty crude creatures. We want more, more, more. We have insatiable appetites. We do everything in excess, in both our personal and collective lives. The fruit of this appetite is now spread out in front of us.

Just as we have not taken care of our bodies, we have not taken care of the body of the Earth. What we have now is a plea from the Earth, itself, to recalibrate. We have to do a deep reckoning of what is enough and what is the cost.

JT: Where does this insatiable appetite come from? Why are we compelled to "fill up" way past full?

EL: At the crux of it, we are in denial that life is difficult. We rush to fill every moment — to move away from the discomfort we experience with life itself and ourselves.

Our biggest difficulty is accepting the fact that we die. Life is a series of cycles within a big cycle. Creation leads to demise and destruction. This may sound gloomy, but it’s not. It’s real. We grow through pain. Women who are ‘laboring’ experience enormous pain and out of that pain comes a baby. When we work consciously through life, when we are not in denial, we grow the pain and we come through it.

We can cultivate a spiritual attitude and know that we will leave our body and something new will be born. We can fear less and have faith that change can always bring with it rebirth. We can consciously participate in life or kick and scream and go into denial.

JT: Well, I do see your point and agree with you, except to say that I gave birth to my son in the car. No labor pains, just joy!

EL: (Elevated voice; laughter) … Oh My! You blew my whole thing.

Be the Change

JT: (Laughter subsides) … Okay, so let’s see if I understand this. We are in denial. Our need to fill every moment, to run away from our discomfort, leads to excessive behavior, and we are using up the limited resources that the Earth offers. We need to change.

EL: Ultimately, change happens as people do. "Be the change," as Ghandi said. It is very important that we walk our talk.

We need to ask ourselves, "What is enough is my own life? In the material world? In my psychological and spiritual world? Am I satiated? Am I full? Do I really need another helping of food, attention, clothes, car, vacation?"

There are billions of people on earth who need to be kept fed, clothed and warm, but there are limited resources. If each one of us doesn’t ask, "Is this enough?" … We are going to be in trouble.

Those who have ecological consciousness do have a duty to raise the consciousness of other people.

The Spiritual Plane: The Practical Plane

JT: What specifically can one do on both practical and spiritual planes? Small steps to get us going in the right direction.

EL: On the practical side, we can conserve water. We can drink tap water (instead of bottled water). We can turn the water off while brushing our teeth, take shorter showers, maintain smaller lawns, and run full loads of laundry and dishes, rather than half loads.

Spiritually, the tool of meditation is a powerful teaching tool that can help you to make peace with the moment just as it is. It is only when you can rest peacefully in a string of moments that you can stop long enough to know why you are doing something. Rushing through every moment leads to unconscious decisions and excessive behavior.

JT: Thank you, Elizabeth, for your time, thought provoking words and for your amazing work at Omega.

EL: You’re very welcome.

I’d like to end with a quote from Wendell Berry, writer, environmentalist.

"The care of the Earth is our most ancient and most worthy, and after all our most pleasing responsibility. To cherish what remains of it and foster its renewal is our only hope." ~ Wendell Berry
