How to Make Nut and Seed Milk – 3 Ways

almond-milk-set-shot-1024x768If you’re interested in finding an alternative to dairy and soy milk – or just want a delicious, creamy beverage to sip on or use for smoothies and hot chocolate – then look no further than these homemade nut and seed milk recipes!

I’m outlining almond, cashew, and sunflower seed milk, to start off, though there are certainly others you can explore. Enjoy!

1. Almond Milk

I resisted making almond milk for years. I kept hearing it was easy, but somehow, I couldn’t get my head around it. I don’t like processed almond milk, so I thought, “how good can it be?” Wow! Not only is it simple, it is delicious. To me it tastes like melted vanilla ice cream. Does it get any better than that?

Yes, it does, because it is actually really good for you too. Almonds are a rich source of Vitamin E, calcium, folic acid, as well as the minerals magnesium, selenuim, phosphorus and zinc. Almonds are wonderful for maintaining skin elasticity as well as helping to lower cholesterol and being a good source of protein. Dates play a big role here too. They are a rich source of vitamins and minerals including iron, potassium and calcium and are a awesome natural sweetener.

  • almonds – 1 cup, raw
  • water – 4 cups
  • vanilla extract – 1 tsp
  • himalaya salt – a pinch
  • medjool dates – 5
  • raw cacao powder – 1 tsp (optional; for chocolate milk)
  • honey – 1/2 tsp (optional)

Put 1 cup of raw almonds in a bowl, Fill with water.

In a separate bowl put 5 medjool dates. Fill that with water.

Soak them both overnight (or for at least 4 hours)

Rinse the nuts in cool water a few times. Do NOT use the water that the nuts have been soaking in. It will make the milk taste bitter. Rinse the nuts until all of the frothy bits are gone.

Put the nuts, the dates AND the date water into the blender. Make sure to take the pits out of the dates before blending.

Add 4 cups of water, 1 teaspoon of vanilla and a pinch of himalaya salt.

Strain the almond milk though a cheesecloth, a strainer with a paper towel, or a nut bag (yes, there actually is something called a ‘nut bag’. I can’t help but giggle when I say it) . That gets out all of the almond bits, so your milk is silky smooth.

This recipe yields approximately 4 cups of almond milk. The almond milk separates naturally, so give it a quick shake before you drink it. It will last for for 3-4 days in the fridge.

2. Cashew Milk

I think that cashews are a perfect food. They are so packed with essential minerals it hard to think of something they don’t do to benefit your health. These awesome nuts support your heart, brain, bone and nerve health. They are also good for skin elasticity as well as hair and nail strength. The best part is that they are a natural anti-depressant. In short, they make you feel good and look good. Did I mention they also happen to be delicious? Lucky us.

Cashew milk is the closest to whole milk in taste and texture. The thickness comes from the fact that this milk does not need to be strained the way that almond milk does. That also makes it much easier to make with less mess.

  • cashews – raw -1 cup, soaked overnight
  • medjool dates – 4 cups pitted, soaked overnight
  • water – 4 cups
  • himalaya salt – dash
  • vanilla extract – 1 tsp

Rinse the nuts under cold water until the water runs clear. Add all the other ingredients (including the water that the dates were soaked in). Blend until completely smooth.

Drink it, use it in smoothies or on cereal.

3. Sunflower Seed Milk

This one might not be for everyone. The sunflower seeds have a slightly bitter after-taste similar to that of sunflower seed butter. I tend to use it more in smoothies and on cereal. I drink it plain sometimes but my kids won’t touch it like that. “So why should I make this?” You’re probably asking. Because it is really easy, it is incredibly good for you and when you feel like it, you can turn it into a magical potion called Chocolate Cardamom Sunflower Seed Milk. For that, you will thank me.

Sunflower seeds are very high in trace minerals like selenium and magnesium. These minerals are an essential part of what keep our bones strong and our nerves calm. These seeds are also filled with Vitamin E which, like an internal sunblock, protects your skin from UV radiation. Sunflower seeds also help to sweep accumulated radiation out of your system.

I tend to leave my nuts and seeds to soak overnight. As part of my bedtime ritual, I soak whichever ones I plan to use the next day. It doesn’t take much time. You just have to remember to do it which is a task in itself. Once you’re in the habit, it is like second nature. Nuts and seeds tend to be difficult for your body to break down. Soaking them makes them infinitely more digestible.

  • sunflower seeds – 1 cup, raw (soaked for at least 4 hours)
  • medjool dates – 4 large (soaked for at least 4 hours)
  • water – 4 cups
  • vanilla extract – 1/2 tsp
  • himalaya salt – pinch

Rinse the seeds under cold water until the water runs clear. Put them and all of the other ingredients (including the water the dates were soaked in) into a high speed blender. Blend until smooth. It should be thick and creamy, like a milkshake.

The Health Risks of Electromagnetic Fields

Geschäftsfrau hat Feierabend

Our dependence on electronics is higher than ever before and not likely to decrease any time soon. Could you even imagine going a few days without indoor electricity, television, your favorite household electronic (I heart you, blender), your cell phone, computer, or tablet? I couldn’t – even as I write this now, I’m typing on my laptop, my cell phone is next to my laptop, behind me sits our modem and wireless router, and as I look out the balcony I see power lines just a few feet away. I admit it, I love technology (most of us do). However, the problem is that all electrical devices emit an electromagnetic field that is potentially dangerous to our health – now that’s enough to make me think twice about my electronic use.

Electromagnetic fields (EMFs) are invisible areas of energy, often called radiation, that surround any electric device. This includes cell phones, mobile towers, broadcast towers, computers, power lines, industrial equipment, electrical wiring, radiation machines, and household appliances, just to name a few. The actual electric component of an EMF typically doesn’t harm humans as it is the voltage used to power the device and is shielded by walls, cases, and other objects (however, direct contact can cause serious burns). On the other hand, the magnetic area of an EMF is where medical concerns arise since there are no barriers (besides distance) between magnetic fields and the human body.

At any given time, the human body creates a variety of tiny electrical currents to function normally. For example, nerves use electrical impulses to communicate with the body, while proper digestion, brain activity, and heartbeat regulation all rely on electronic currents. Exposure to a high EMF or constant exposure to low EMFs can over simulate our nerves, muscles, and other biological reactions and potential create health problems.

A variety of studies show links between EMFs and increased risk of cancer (especially brain cancer, breast cancer, and childhood leukemia), pregnancy complications (including miscarriage), reproductive problems, sleep disturbances, headaches, autism, respiratory problems, fatigue, and a host of other serious health issues. However, there is still a continuing debate about whether these links are causal and consistent. Regardless, even if the jury is still out, if you’re like me, I would rather take preventative measures now than risk so many possible negative health effects. Below are some tips to decrease the amount of EMFs that enter your body (while still enjoying the modern day benefits of electrical devices).

Remember the strength of the magnetic field weakens as it travels away from its source. The farther you can be from your electronics, the better. Here are 8 ways to decrease your exposure to EMFs:

  1. Don’t sleep with your phone, computer, or any electronic device right next to you (I’m often guilty of this)
  2. Alternate which ear you use when talking on your cell phone
  3. Keep your laptop on a table or desk instead of your lap (whoever named it “laptop” clearly wasn’t thinking about EMF risks)
  4. Turn off electrical devices like TVs and computers when you aren’t using them (perk: you’ll be saving money too)
  5. Unplug electronics from walls when traveling or when you won’t use them for awhile (even just having an electronic plugged in but turned off still emits a low EMF)
  6. Consider investing in an EMF shielding device for home or office use (you can even find these in some hotel rooms)
  7. Repair faulty wiring in your home or business
  8. Take time each day to be technology free – go for a walk, meditate, practice yoga, hand-write in a journal, read a book (no reading devices), or spend time in nature

As researchers continue to study the relationship between EMF exposure and our health, you have the ability to protect yourself and your family now by being aware of this danger and using the tips above as often as you can.

Electromagnetic Field Exposure: The Latest Danger—’Smart Meters’

I’ve been researching Smart Meters the last few months since they are going to be installed in all houses in British Columbia, Canada which is where I live.  WOW!  I am completely blown away by what I’ve learned and how this might affect our health.

This is a topic which is relevant to people worldwide since they are already installed all over the USA, Australia and Europe.  There are certain municipalities which have managed to put the Smart Meter program in their area on hold.

I recently met with EMF expert and author of Living Safely with Electromagnetic Radiation: A Complete Guide for Protecting Your Health, Jim Waugh, who spoke to me in detail about the negative health impacts he says Smart Meters will have on our health if/when they are installed.  This meeting prompted me to do this blog post on Smart Meters.

Please take the time (30 minutes) to watch this presentation about these ‘Smart’ Meters.  It is a bit long but VERY informative, and worth the time:

The Dark Side of 'Smart' Meters

This is some information from Dr. Mercola’s EMF website (great site with lots of info on EMF dangers):

Some areas of the United States have already begun installing a so-called ‘smart grid,’ where utility meters transmit data on your household energy usage wirelessly to the utility. Eventually, they want to expand this to installing smart meters on each household appliance within your home, to individually transmit the usage data to the smart meter.

If this technological advancement is allowed to spread across the nation, public health may plummet across the board.

According to Vickie, they’ve already seen a direct correlation between increasing health complaints in neighborhoods where smart meters have been installed. An excellent interview on the radio frequency these new energy strategies will bring into your home can be found at on ElectromagneticHealth.org. It features Blake Levitt, author of Electromagnetic Fields and a long-time science writer on this topic, and Duncan Campbell, Esq, a visionary thinker on the future of utilities and new energy technologies.

“Usually, the first issue that people start talking about is inability to sleep, or mood swings, along with headaches,” Vickie says.
How can you protect your health if your community forces one on you?

“We’ve talked to several people in Australia. What they’re doing is to put a reflective barrier to keep radiation from your meter from coming into the home,” Vickie says. “The problem is you’ve also got to be aware of your neighbor’s meters and where they are located.”
This can be a significant challenge if you live in a densely populated area or in a multi-unit dwelling. You’d have to identify all the sources, and address all of them.

However, you may be able to request that your meter be set up to transmit information only once a day, as opposed to once every minute. So if your home is outfitted with a smart meter, talk to your utility company and see if you can change the transmission rate to once every 24 hours, ideally during a time that you’re not home. And then tell your neighbors and ask them to do the same.

“What is radiation ? What we should do? What our Japanese brothers & sisters should do:”.

Dear Friends,
Japan has seen devastating calamity of nature.According to my sister Dr.Niharika Purohit 5 elements of the nature has created problem.(1)Earth-earth quack.(2)Water -Tsunami(3)Wind-spread the radiation(4)Fire-Makes fire in cities & towns.(5)Sky-Spoiled the ether.
Every thing has destroyed the area, but radiation is the most dangerous factor as you aware. It might spread to the surrounding areas also.I am sending a file with this shows an experienced remedy for the radiation. If possible & if you have trust in me then do forward the file to your Japanese friends, groups, observatories, not as a scientist but as a human being. At least we should do some thing for them.
Pl.feel free to have more details about the attached file & its matter.
with best regards,
Divyadarshan D.Purohit

What is radiation?
Energetic particles or waves passes through space/medium are called radiation. These are of mainly two types.(1)Ionizing Having ionized atom & (2)Non Ionizing e.g. Radio waves & visible light. Electric/magnetic field divided radioactive radiation in mainly three beam.
(A)Alpha: with +ve  ion e.g. plutonium.
(B) Beta :  with +ve ione.Krypton-85 of Nuclear power plant is a beta emitter.
 © Gamma:
Radiation in any form is dangerous to atmosphere as well as human body/animal/living body. It is hard to prevent /stop the radiation once it is started.
Let us hope :
In our Indian mythology there is a proved therapy for pollution control, human body & mind control etc. & i.e.Yagya,Agnihotr,havan or say pious sacred fire.
It is proved by scientific research ( I have so many proofs ,not possible to give in this small letter but I can provide later on to the interested) that,
It balance the cycle of Nature & nourishes the human life ,helps to create pure-clean-medicinal environment & atmosphere, cleans negative effects of pollution. It helps to reduced micro flora  (air microbes),SO2,NO2 & bacteria level in water.
Some Examples:
According to Dr. Shirowich, a Russian scientist has remarked that (i) Cow’s milk
contains great power of protection from atomic radiation; (ii) Houses having
cow-dung covered floors enjoy complete protection from atomic radiation; (iii) If
cow’s ghee is put into Yagna fire, its fumes lessen the effect of atomic radiation to a great extent.
Cow dung contains plenty of menthol, ammonia, phenol, indole compounds, formadin etc.
In the garden of employees house at Narora Nuclear Power Plant in UP of India ,Mixtures of cow dung & cow urine are being sprayed & allow the person to walk on the sprayed land with naked legs ,it seem that radio activity has been absorbed.
It is also observed that a half an inch of layer of a cow dung will not allow x rays to penetrate in hand.
If a Yagya (Sacred Fire with chanting of sacred chants) is carried out in a anti pyramid type vessel(known as Kund) i.e. oblation of fire with cow dung(i.e. only from cow family like cow ,calf or bullock & not else),cow ghee, gugool,& dry twigs of banyan tree, audumbar, palash, peepal etc. then radiation could be controlled. Even ash products of this experiments has also the same effect.
How this could be effected?
Though this is yet to be proved fully by scientist community but I have experienced and as per me this gives result in this way…..It helps to prevent decaying of radioactive elements by changing its temperature, making a chemical bonding or taking it at resting state.
I want to prove the same if I am having a detector to measure radiation (if any one is ready to provide the same/help then  our Indian group of scientist is ready to carry out experiments in effected area of Japan & this will be a mile stone in radiation prevention ).
According to Dr.W.Selvamurthy of DRDO there are only  3 herbal plants in the world which can work as radio protector /antidote for radiation. Basil(Tulsi) is one of them.
If Basil & Neem are taken as food, by diluting in drinking & bathing water they can also help as a remedy.
What we should do:
Not as a scientist but as a part of humankind I request you to forward this to your known Japanese friend so they can be benefited.
What Japanese should do:
If they can not do the yagya as specified, they should do …
(1)Make the fire of Cow dung & cow ghee round the clock,
(2)Try to spray the smoke of this on the effected area with help of Helicopter, vehicles.
(3)Do mix the plenty of basils & neem in the water.
It is good to do something rather then a painful death.
Hope you will understand the feelings, because no cosmologist is writing this ,only your friend, a friend of humanity is urge you to spread the message to Japanese people. Let us pray for natural calamities &Japan,
Om shanti.

Breast Reconstruction – Impact of Radiation Therapy

Radiation therapy is often recommended as part of breast cancer treatment. Patients undergoing lumpectomy receive radiation routinely once they’ve healed from surgery. Some mastectomy patients also need radiation after surgery depending on the characteristics of the tumor. I think it is fair to say that most reconstructive breast surgeons, myself included, are not particularly fond of radiation because of the way it impacts the patient’s tissues (and breast reconstruction in general.) Nonetheless, it is important to remember that "life comes before breast" and in certain situations there is a definite benefit for the patient in having radiation therapy.

So what’s the problem with radiation therapy (from a plastic surgeon’s perspective)? For starters it can cause toughening (fibrosis) and shrinking (contracture) of the patient’s tissue which makes the tissue lose its elasticity and become more tough and rigid. Skin color changes are common, red at first turning more brown over time. Radiation can also cause burn injuries as well as damage to underlying organs such as the lungs and heart. Anyone who is facing radiation therapy must discuss all the potential risks with their their radiation oncologist beforehand.

Women undergoing lumpectomy are often told that most of their breast will be preserved and that radiation is given "as insurance" to decrease the risk of cancer recurrence. What many women don’t appreciate is that the breast can end up looking vastly different once the treatment is done because of radiation changes, even though they underwent "breast conservation". Many women end up going to see a plastic surgeon anyway to fix this unforeseen problem, which ironically can include the same reconstructive procedures as for mastectomy.

Radiation after a tissue reconstruction (eg tram flap, diep flap) can cause the reconstructed breast to shrink and harden. Unfortunately, this is a fairly common scenario. Less frequently (with heavy radiation doses), new wounds can develop in the reconstructed breast which need wound care. Patients facing radiation after flap breast reconstruction should know that there is a risk of needing further reconstructive surgery to correct changes caused by the radiation therapy. One study found a re-operation rate of almost 30% in patients receiving radiation after TRAM flap reconstruction.

Tissue expander / implant reconstructions fair even worse with radiation. The complication rates in this setting are much higher than with tissue reconstructions, including complete failure of the reconstruction altogether (and removal of the implant). Some surgeons routinely offer implant reconstructions to patients that are either facing or have already had radiation therapy. There are even articles published in the plastic surgery literature supporting it. I have to respectfully disagree (strongly). In my experience mixing implants with radiation typically ends badly. I will only do this in the very rare instance that there is absolutely no other option.

So what’s the take-home message? 1) "Breast conservation" can fall short of the patient’s cosmetic expectations. 2) breast implants and radiation do not mix well. 3) If you’re facing radiation after mastectomy think twice about insisting on immediate reconstruction. You may be lucky and things may work out just fine. However, there’s also a good chance you’ll be signing up for more surgery than you bargained for.

We can’t deny the effects on us from harmful radiation because they are part of our daily lives. According to scientists our daily dosage of electromagnetic radiation is much above normal standards. So we must find ways to neutralize this. In other words our energy fields must be balanced and the source of interference counterattacked.

Sunspots, Earth’s magnetic fields reinforced by underground water streams on certain surfaces of lands plus man-made devices for example; Power lines, transformers, appliances, radars, TV sets, computers, cellular phones, microwaves, copiers, auto engines and many more energy sources are indeed responsible for our stress, disease and harmful effects on us. All of the above explained produce electromagnetic fields that affect our mental and physical health because our energy systems are weakened or out of balance. The good news is that we human beings can increase our energy shield with our minds and loving hearts. The awakening and spiritual feeding of our chakras add an extra protection from what we can’t avoid being exposed to. Here our daily meditations play a vital role because our projected to the cosmos energy finds a response from high forces, so they descend sheltering ourselves and homes.

Ancient and modern mystics have helped us with a very simple, but at the same time a powerful source that absorbs a lot of harmful radiation. It has to do by using    about two liters of common water on wide moth containers which are placed in our bedrooms, studies etc. that are replaced by fresh water every morning. Another useful source is stepping on barefooted on grass with dew. Dew is condensed cosmic energy.  Every time when I detect dew on car’s hoods, and windshields as I get near a park to jog on it, I gather the most quantity as possible and I wash my face and hands with this liquid. Every time you have a chance to salute our sun on sunrises by extending your arms and spreading your legs to form a star and feeling that our hearts absorb the sun’s energy we will indeed count with extra energy.

With a huge cosmic heart full of energy I embrace you with tons of Divine love

Breast Cancer Recurrence Not Related To Method Of Breast Reconstruction

One of my breast cancer patients called me today. She recently underwent bilateral mastectomies and immediate breast reconstruction with DIEP flaps. She recovered very well from the surgery but unfortunately her pathology results showed that she had cancer extending almost to the edge of the mastectomy specimen. The exact medical jargon used by the pathologist was…. "invasive carcinoma extending to 1mm from the margin". She also had DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ) "extending to 0.2mm from the margin."

From a purist’s perspective, these results still represent "clear margins". In other words, no tumor was found at the edge of the mastectomy specimen so there is no reason to believe there is any cancer left in my patient’s breast. BUT, it’s very close and that is certainly worrisome.

She called me today because she visited with her oncologist (cancer doc) and a radiation oncologist (cancer doc specializing in radiotherapy) and radiation therapy was recommended (in addition to the planned chemotherapy). She explained to the radiation oncologist that she was worried the radiation therapy would ruin her DIEP flap reconstruction.

She is right to be fearful of this – patients undergoing radiation therapy after an autologous reconstruction (ie a reconstruction using their own tissue) have a 28% risk of needing further surgery to correct asymmetry caused by the radiation changes (usually firming and shrinking) of the irradiated breast.

The response she received from the radiation oncologist baffled me (and is actually the reason behind this blogpost)…… "DIEP flap? What’s a DIEP flap?…. if you’d had a TRAM flap then you wouldn’t be needing radiation".

This is a ridiculous statement. Let me clarify why…

This lady is being recommended radiation therapy as an insurance policy to decrease the risk of local recurrence (cancer coming back in the same breast). This is a consequence of her "near margins" which in turn are a result of the mastectomy specimen. Obviously the mastectomy was completed before the reconstruction was even started. If this lady had only had the mastectomy (without reconstruction) the margins would be the same. The breast reconstruction, and moreover, the type of breast reconstruction has absolutely nothing to do with it. The margins, the pathologist reading and the recommendation for radiation therapy would have been exactly the same whether reconstruction was performed or not.

So what’s the take home message if you’re considering breast reconstruction surgery? Choose whichever method of reconstruction is best for you. Your decision will not influence the likelihood of your cancer coming back in any way. The risk of cancer recurrence is related to the characteristics of the cancer itself and the mastectomy margins, not the method of reconstruction.

Nutrition During & After Treatment

If you’re recovering from surgery, receiving chemotherapy or radiation, or having other breastcancertreatment, your main focus is on getting rid of the cancer. Eating well will help you stay strong by giving your body the nutrients it needs.

You and your doctor can’t predict exactly how your treatment will affect you. Your general health and weight before your diagnosis play a role. So do the type, amount, and length of treatment you are receiving. As you move through your treatment, listen to your body and respond to what it needs.

You may continue to enjoy cooking and eating and have a normal appetite. Or you might have days when you don’t feel like eating anything, days when you want to eat everything, and times when only some things taste good. It’s best to have a flexible, healthy eating plan to help you deal with your body’s changing needs and wants.

A healthydiet—one with a variety of foods that includes lots of fruits and vegetables and regular protein—gives you the reserves of nutrients you need to keep your strength up while you’re fighting breast cancer. These reserves also help rebuild your body’s tissues and keep your immune system strong to help fight off infection. Plus, a healthy diet can help you cope with treatment side effects. There is evidence that some cancer treatments actually work better in people who are eating enough calories and protein. While you’re having breast cancer treatment, it’s more important than ever that you eat a healthy diet.
