Intent of the Day: Things That No Longer Serve

When was the last time you went through a solid spring cleaning? Not just your bedroom. Not just the places people can see. We’re talking the deep cleaning. The garage. Behind the appliances. The areas you usually avoid. What about the things that don’t even work anymore- figuratively and literally. Taking a quick inventory, we can often find quick fixes, things hanging on by a thread and unnecessary items collecting dust in our home, but also in our mental and emotional lives. You have a bookshelf but it is full of books you never read and basically serves as an item we avoid having to dust. We have a closet full of clothes that used to fit or we hope will one day fit but no real plan for how to do that.

Our physical space is often time a symbol of what is going on internally. Are there things collecting dusts? Are there problems waiting with no plan of action to move you closer to a solution? You need no special mountaintop moment to begin taking inventory of what works and what doesn’t. Some things are still in fine condition, they just no longer serve where you are and where you are going. This means that a person, place or thing doesn’t have to be bad to be ready to transition elsewhere. It simply means keeping your eyes and your grip open for the purpose of growth.

We intend to release the things that no longer serve.

You too? Here are 3 things to help you do the same? Continue reading

A Vision for Helpfulness

“We see a world where people are helping each other; where we are open at all times to support others and give assistance to whoever needs it with whatever they need it for.

We see helpfulness being the watchword of the day so that when we meet someone new our first and foremost inclination is to help them. Can you imagine it – because if you can, you can create it! For, it leads us to a world where we truly care about one another; where we are grateful to each other for the help we've received; and where we are all expressing a willingness to serve our fellow travelers.

With an attitude such as this we've charted a course that will, most assuredly bring us peace of mind and the experience of Oneness with All That Is.”

Can An Ordinary Person Enjoy A State Of Grace?

As a divine being, a Soul, you bring spiritual light and love into this world.
You create a space for grace to be in your life.

Dr John-Roger

Can we create the conditions in which we lead grace-full lives? And if so how? Is it even possible to expect to live gracefully, with the world in so much chaos? My view is that there has never been a better time.

To live in grace is surely to experience our burdens being lifted from us from time to time; that our passage becomes smoother and more enjoyable, even when conditions seem hard to bear.

From Dictionary.com, here are some definitions of grace:
the freely given, unmerited favour and love of God.
the influence or spirit of God operating in humans to regenerate or strengthen them.
a virtue or excellence of divine origin: the Christian graces.
Also called state of grace, the condition of being in God’s favour or one of the elect.

Here are some of the attributes that I believe can lead towards living more grace-fully:

1. Surrender…
… to a higher power

Let go of trying to control outcomes that may be beyond your sphere of influence. This is not so easy if you like to know what is going on, to make things happen exactly the way you want, and to direct the future. These days the future appears uncertain at best, so to try to control it is very frustrating. No wonder so many are suffering from sleeplessness.

A higher power you might see as God, or the Universe, or simply life itself. Years ago, travelling in India, I came to realize that there is much more to life than meets the eye. This "much more" is something extraordinary and life-sustaining. Grace seems to be part of it.

I do not at all understand the mystery of grace –
only that it meets us where we are but does not leave us where it found us.

Anne Lamott

2. Sacrifice and forgive….
…. the negative emotions: fear, doubt, anger, resentment, guilt, blame, shame

To dwell in negative emotion is to drain your energy and leave you feeling depleted and discouraged. To unblock the drains has two meanings. One is to release the negativity that may be clogging your thinking and well-being. Another is to let go of attitudes, relationships or some commitments that may be exhausting you.

Forgive yourself, not always so easy. Forgive others you feel have wronged you. You cannot change the past. You can create the future you would like to enjoy.

You are so weak. Give up to grace.
The ocean takes care of each wave
till it gets to shore.

Jalal ad-Din Rumi

3. Cultivate faith and trust

People who work in the arts fields – writing, painting, acting, music, sculpting – get used to a certain lack of security and develop ways to sustain their confidence and energy levels. A successful novelist friend uses these statements, which I love.

I am trusting and patient
I am calm
I understand that everything is happening perfectly
I have faith

Gracefulness has been defined to be the outward expression
of the inward harmony of the soul.

William Hazlitt

4. Serve with compassion…
…. give to those who can benefit from you

Anguish and anxiety trap us in a narrow vision of what is possible, for ourselves and others. The good news about bad news is that it can awaken our sense of compassion for those who are in a worse state than our own. Expressing empathy through action can serve you as much as those you serve.

5. Be thankful…
…. for all of the good you enjoy right now

Gratitude opens a channel (and the heart) for receiving. However little you feel you now have, and the losses you may have had to bear, be mindful of those blessings which in the past you may have taken for granted. Even small things, taken into account, can help you to relax and feel better.

Gratitude and grace seem to go hand in hand. I have found that when I have been grateful in a less than pleasant situation, grace has extended a friendly hand to me, a gift of some kind.

Grace is available for each of us every day – our spiritual daily bread –
but we’ve got to remember to ask for it with a grateful heart
and not worry about whether there will be enough for tomorrow.

Sarah Ban Breathnach

6. Be the blessings that you are..
… keep going!

It may just be one small step at a time, but each step you take will make a difference. It may not be the "perfect" step. If not, you will learn from it, so in that way each step will always be perfect.

Know that beneath the razzamatazz that is daily life, you are unique, and rich with many blessings in your innate nature. We all are.

7. Be prepared to be pleasantly surprised…
…. expect the best

As you stay open to expect the unexpected, you never know what good might be waiting for you around the next corner. Allow yourself to receive the best for you.

Grace is clear Spirit energy that comes to you without any conditions on it.

Dr John-Roger

As we grow aware of and appreciate the smallest signs of grace showing up, more are likely to meet us. What we celebrate, we receive more of. May you be enriched and rewarded with many blessings of grace in this coming holiday season.

Hayley Westenra sings Amazing Grace:

Have you ever been aware of the presence of grace in your life? Who do you consider to be a grace-full or gracious person? How do you think we could experience more grace as a way of being? I would love to hear from you.

How do you spell the word ‘give’?

It’s spelled as … c-o-m-p-a-s-s-i-o-n.

When you give, it simply means that you —

— clearly see, can understand, can relate, do sympathize, do care, do love — the other person

…..who may not be as bright, as well-positioned, as educated, as rich, as healthy, as well-dressed, or as beautiful as you are.

You give because you see the other person’s need to receive.

And you respond as God so responds.

Giving straight from the heart….. is the blueprint of GIVE… and of giving.

I remember this piece written long time ago.

A lighted candle says this to us:

"You have lighted me and now you gaze into my flame. You enjoy the warmth and brightness that I spread. I’m happy to be useful and to burn for your pleasure. Otherwise, i would just be lying idle in some box on a shelf. I only have a meaning – a fulfillment while I am burning, although I know very well that the longer I burn the shorter I become and the nearer I get to the end of my life. And when it is all over, I know that you will say…. ‘The candle is burned out.’

I know I have a choice of staying in a box and remaining unseen, untouched, and useless. Or I can burn myself out by giving light and warmth — and hasten my death by doing so. But I find that giving is more beautiful and meaningful."

—————- Unquote ———————–

Humans are like that candle. Either we keep boxed up and remain cold and empty —- or we mix with people and share our warmth and love. This then gives our lives meaning.

I woke up to a fine morning, got up leisurely from my bed and sauntered over to the bedroom window … looked out to the day– it looked like it was going to be a good day despite the clearly overcast skies. Why? I don’t know. Maybe it’s a feeling one gets when everything within is peaceful, serene, and quite content. Not that nothing is bothersome or ‘kicking butt’ mine or somebody else’s, it’s just that some mornings do give us that ‘feel good’ feeling. Well, this is that particular morning.

Apparently the neighborhood has had a good head start getting on with the day’s routine of chores. I hear a neighbor’s washing machine spinning away with their usual laundry. Coming down the street are young children in their blue crisp uniforms on their way to school. Following not far behind are two housewives perhaps on their way to the market, too. (‘Wonder what they’re going to cook up for lunch today.) A car passing them slows briefly down to a halt; Mr. Perez, behind the wheel on his way to work, takes time to greet the ladies. Right across my window stands a proud mango tree with its trimmed branches (done ‘bout 2-3 months ago by Mr. Noble, my favorite neighbor) now growing new leaves in places where it used to be bare. And seen below at the foot of the tree is a small low-lying bush happily holding up its new blossoms for everyone to see. (‘Wonder though if people passing by do notice.)

Quite an ordinary scene repeated in many places everywhere. In fact, I think it’s down pat to routine, for the human part that is. As for nature, it does what it does best always — live. So it really is this – that no matter the threat of terrorist bomb scares, a heavy downpour, or whether somebody is gravely sick or has died today – they’ll do it anyhow. People get on with their lives. Nature does the same. Even if war explodes this very minute, it won’t stop the roses from blooming. They’ll do it anyway.

In just the same manner, do the good that you want to do. Teach your students well, close that major contract for your company, minister to your sick patients, police your area, speak up for the underprivileged, serve in a civic program for the handicapped, or continue loving your unlovable friend. No matter how you may feel – or despite the risk of being misunderstood – or if friends tell you that you’re overextending yourself this time, do it anyway. It’s not meant to please anyone; it’s something you must do because you believe in it. And by the way, has it ever crossed your mind that God despite our unworthiness loves us anyway? Lovely, isn’t it?!

Read this poem late last night…..

by Mother Theresa of Calcutta

People are often unconscious, illogical and self-centered
Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish and ulterior motives
Be kind anyway.
If you are successful, you will win some false friends and true enemies
Succeed anyway.
If you are honest and frank, people will cheat you
Be honest and frank anyway.
What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight
Build anyway.
The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow
Be good anyway.
Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough
Give the world the best you’ve got anyway.
You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and God
It was never between you and them anyway.

It might be possible, that certain people might consider and seek to count persistently the number of people serving them; the wealth they accumulate; the recognition; the prestigious milestones ahead of them

However, when one completes this wonderful journey on Mother Earth; in the Kingdom of God; the number of people a person served with humility, compassion and love accompanied with good deeds is what “Counts”

Yes indeed; when we serve Humanity selflessly; we are humbly extending a noble and glorious tribute to life

Note of Thanks – Gratitude

This is a note of thanks to all those who have; who are and who will serve Humanity; enriching it with goodness for one and all selflessly

It is true that there are those who serve selflessly and do not wish to reveal or disclose their identities; since for them it is not the title or prestige of recognition that counts

Counts – They Know

They truly know that in the Kingdom of God; the number of people they served with humility, compassion and love accompanied with their good and noble deeds is what “Counts”

Augments and comes when it is destined to; it is our duty to serve truly, nobly and with meaningful intentions

Since it is the hands of time that eventually catches up with us; seeking accountability for every action

If we hurt someone today; then likewise someone else apparently hurts us at another place; at another time;

The Equation – The Law of Karma – The Law of Consequence

But the equation is persistently seeking accountability; the law of karma prevails infinitely

If we are mindful and meaningfully considerate and responsible in our thoughts and actions; it matters
