7 Reasons to Eat More Beets

People either love beets or they hate them, mostly because they haven’t discovered all the wonderful ways to enjoy beets.  I, personally, am in the LOVE BEETS camp.  I still remember the first time I ate them as a child.  I wanted them every day after that.  Whether you already love them, or just haven’t discovered their marvels, here are 7 reasons to eat more beets.

1. Beets are high in nutrients such as folate, manganese, potassium, and vitamin C, making them an excellent source of nutrients, and a particularly good choice for pregnant women who have higher folate needs during pregnancy.

2. In their uncooked state, beets also contain an important compound called betaine, which research has shown reduces several compounds linked to inflammation in the body. In other words, it’s a great anti-inflammatory food that helps protect us from the effects of aging and disease.

3. Beets are one of Nature’s miracles in the prevention of cancer.  The fiber found in beets seems to increase the body’s special immune compounds that are responsible for detecting and removing abnormal cells before they can become cancerous.

4. Beets help fight cancer.  The phytonutrients–proanthocyanidins–that gives beets their rich purplish-red hue has potent anti-cancer capabilities.

5. Beets have been recommended for many years to help purify the blood.

6. Beets also help cleanse the liver—one of the most overworked organs in the body, with over 500 functions including: cleansing toxins, removing excess hormones, and metabolizing fat.

7. They are versatile.  They can be eaten raw (grated), steamed, boiled (although many nutrients are lost in the cooking water), or added to soups and stews. I love steamed beets tossed with a little flax oil and unrefined sea salt. Remember: the anti-cancer properties of beets lessen with heat! So it’s always a great idea to enjoy a little grated raw beetroot on your salads.

New Year, New You Detox–Week 2: Cleanse Your Bowels and Urinary Tract

Over the next four weeks, I’ll continue to share a modified version of my detox plan outlined in my book, The 4-Week Ultimate Body Detox Plan. If you missed, last week’s article, "Get the Junk Out," it’s not to late to start detoxing. The next four weeks include:

 

Week 2—Kidney and Colon Cleanse
Week 3—Lymphomania
Week 4—Liver and Gallbladder Cleanse
Week 5—Cleansing Your Blood, Lungs, and Skin
 
While it isn’t necessary to do all five weeks, it tends to provide the best results. As I mentioned last week, don’t detox if you’re diabetic, pregnant or lactating. And, always consult your physician before making any dietary or lifestyle changes. Check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding any herbs to your health plan.  You can start at any point in the 5 week plan or just do a single week to target specific organs.
 
The New Year, New You Detox

-Drink plenty of purified water (at least eight to ten cups per day). This is essential throughout the program because it helps to flush out the many toxins that will be stirred up and eliminated from fat stores and organs in your body. Drinking adequate water will provide the necessary fluid for your body to push toxins out of your lymphatic system (more on this important system next week) through the creation of lymph fluid. It also helps flush out your kidneys, which also require adequate water to function properly. Start your day with 2 cups of pure water with the juice of half a lemon to balance your body chemistry. Drink no more than ½ cup of water with meals otherwise you will dilute your body’s digestive enzymes, which can weaken digestion and overall health over time. Drink water throughout the day, ½ hour before or 1 hour after meals.
 
-After drinking your morning lemon water, wait 10-20 minutes (take your shower) before having a large fruit breakfast. Eat fruit all morning. The enzymes, fiber, and nutrients put your body on the fast track to cleansing. 
 
-Eat plenty of vegetables on this program, preferably raw, steamed, or lightly sautéed. The enzymes, fiber, water content, vitamins, minerals, and high-quality protein that fruits and vegetables provide will help ensure that your nutritional needs are met, particularly since the detox mechanisms in your body have specific requirements. Make bright and colorful vegetables the focal point of meals and snacks and eat as many veggies as you’d like until you feel full—you shouldn’t feel hungry on my detox plan or you’re doing it incorrectly. Limit your consumption of white potatoes however.
 
Start lunch and dinner with a large green salad since they are full of enzymes to help your body with digestion of your meals, instead of depleting your body’s owns supplies. Also, leafy greens are powerhouses of vitamins, minerals, chlorophyll (the green colour in plants that also helps cleanse your blood), and many phytochemicals.

New Year, New You Detox–Week 1

Imagine waking up without an ache or pain, cruising through your day with energy, and ending it by enjoying a refreshing night’s sleep.  Then, imagine waking up to do it all over again.  Think it’s impossible?  Think again.  The key is eliminating toxins from your body and your life.  Over the next five weeks, I’ll show you how to get rid of the toxins following a modified version of the detox diet I share in my best-selling book, The 4-Week Ultimate Body Detox Plan.








            Toxins can leave you feeling sluggish, achy, heavy, and out-of-shape.  They can also be a factor in the development of chronic diseases like cancer, arthritis, diabetes, allergies, and many other serious conditions. 

            This week let’s get started by eliminating harmful foods and lifestyle habits and start to replace them with health-supporting ones. 

Start by lessening or eliminating:

 

-Alcohol, tobacco, recreational drugs.  Of course, continue to use any prescription drugs your doctor has recommended.

-Dairy—milk, cheese, yogurt, sour cream, butter, buttermilk, etc. Many people are sensitive to dairy products but are not aware of this sensitivity. It may show up as digestive difficulties, bloating, cramping, seasonal allergies, joint or muscle pain, arthritis, and many other symptoms and disorders.  During the detox, it’s best to avoid dairy products to give your body a break.  You can begin them again after the detox if you wish.

-Fried foods—I think this one is self-explanatory.

-Sugar, synthetic sweeteners and food made with sugar or sugar substitutes.  If you’re craving sweets, start by eating a piece of fruit or sweeten herbal tea with stevia (a natural sweetener that does not impact blood sugar levels) or a small amount of raw honey or real maple syrup—no more than a teaspoon at a time.  Don’t confuse stevia, an herb that is naturally sweet with Splenda, which is not included in the detox.

-Reduce animal protein to no more than a few eggs per week and 1 meal of meat (preferably organic meat and eggs).  Obviously if you are vegetarian, you can ignore this step.

-What I call the “3 Ps”—processed, packaged and prepared foods.  Instead, you can eat simple home-made meals from fresh ingredients.  By eliminating or reducing these foods, you’ll automatically be lessening your exposure to preservatives, additives, colors, artificial flavors, and trans fats.

-Wheat products (that includes foods made with white or whole wheat flour)—Instead eat brown rice, millet, oatmeal (not the packaged ones with sweeteners and salt—add a teaspoon of pure maple syrup and organic cinnamon for a delicious treat), wild rice, and other whole grains on this program.

-Margarine.  Contrary to common advice, margarine is not a health food.

-Salt—Switch to Celtic sea salt or Himalayan crystal salt, or another type that contains naturally-found minerals alongside the sodium.  Usually they have a grayish or slightly orange color due to the minerals present.  Of course, reduce consumption of salt if you’re a heavy salt user.

-Coffee and black tea—Reduce your consumption to a cup a day.  Try drinking herbal or green tea instead.  Sweeten with stevia if desired.

 

And remember: your efforts will be worth it.

Top 15 Cleansing Foods to Detox Your Body of Harmful Chemicals

64311_10151349080785823_2020637278_nWhen it comes to cleansing your body of harmful toxins, food really is the best medicine. You’ll be amazed to learn that many of your favorite foods assist with cleansing your body’s detox organs like the liver, intestines, kidneys, skin, and more. Help ward off the harmful effects of pollution, food additives, second-hand smoke, and other toxins by reaching for delicious fruits, vegetables, beans, seeds, and oil.

Apples–Because apples are high in pectin, a type of fiber that binds to cholesterol and heavy metals in the body, they help eliminate toxic build up and to cleanse the intestines.

Avocados–We rarely think of avocados as a cleansing food but these nutritional powerhouses lower cholesterol and dilate blood vessels while blocking artery-destroying toxicity. Avocados contain a nutrient called glutathione, which blocks at least thirty different carcinogens while helping the liver detoxify synthetic chemicals.

Beets–Time to whip up some delicious borscht soup since its main ingredient, beets, contain a unique mixture of natural plant compounds that make them superb blood purifiers and liver cleansers.

Blueberries–Truly one of the most powerful healing foods, blueberries contain natural aspirin that helps lessen the tissue-damaging effects of chronic inflammation, while lessening pain. Blueberries also act as antibiotics by blocking bacteria in the urinary tract, thereby helping to prevent infections. They also have antiviral properties and help to block toxins from crossing the blood-brain barrier to gain access to the delicate brain.

Cabbage–Cabbage contains numerous anticancer and antioxidant compounds and helps the liver break down excess hormones. Cabbage also cleanses the digestive tract and neutralizes some of the damaging compounds found in cigarette smoke (and second-hand smoke). It also strengthens the liver’s ability to detoxify.

Celery and Celery Seeds–Celery and celery seeds are excellent blood cleansers and contain many different anti-cancer compounds that help detoxify cancer cells from the body. Celery seeds contain over twenty anti-inflammatory substances. It is particularly good for detoxifying substances found in cigarette smoke.

Cranberries–Cleanse your body from harmful bacteria and viruses that may be lingering in your urinary tract with cranberries since they contain antibiotic and antiviral substances.

Flaxseeds and Flaxseed Oil–Loaded with essential fatty acids, particularly the Omega-3s, flaxseeds and flaxseed oil are essential for many cleansing functions throughout the body.

Garlic–Eat garlic to cleanse harmful bacteria, intestinal parasites and viruses from your body, especially from the blood and intestines. It also helps cleanse build-up from the arteries and has anti-cancer and antioxidant properties that help detoxify the body of harmful substances. Additionally, garlic assists with cleansing the respiratory tract by expelling mucous build-up in the lungs and sinuses. For the health benefits, choose only fresh garlic, not garlic powder, which has virtually none of the above properties.

Grapefruit–Add a ruby red grapefruit to your breakfast to benefit from pectin fiber that binds to cholesterol, thereby cleansing the blood. Pectin also binds to heavy metals and helps escort them out of the body. It also has antiviral compounds that cleanse harmful viruses out of the body. Grapefruit is an excellent intestinal and liver detoxifier.

Kale–Steam some kale to benefit from its powerful anti-cancer and antioxidant compounds that help cleanse the body of harmful substances. It is also high in fiber, which helps cleanse the intestinal tract. Like cabbage, kale helps neutralize compounds found in cigarette smoke and strengthens liver cleansing.

Legumes–Add a handful of cooked beans to your next meal since they loaded with fiber that helps lower cholesterol, cleanses the intestines, and regulates blood sugar levels. Legumes also help protect the body against cancer.

Lemons–Excellent liver detoxifiers, lemons contain high amounts of vitamin C, a vitamin needed by the body to make an important substance called glutathione. Glutathione helps the liver detoxify harmful chemicals. Add a squeeze of fresh lemon juice (not the bottled variety) to pure water to support your cleansing efforts on a daily basis.

Seaweed–Seaweed could be the most underrated vegetable in the western world. Studies at McGill University in Montreal showed that seaweeds bind to radioactive waste in the body. Seaweed also binds to heavy metals to help eliminate them from the body. In addition, they are powerhouses of minerals and trace minerals.

Watercress–If you haven’t tried watercress add this delicious green to your next sandwich since it increases detoxification enzymes and acts on cancer cells in the body. In a study at the Norwich Food Research Centre in the United Kingdom, smokers who were given 170 grams of watercress per day eliminated higher than average amounts of carcinogens in their urine, thereby eliminating them from their body.Eating a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables assists with detoxifying harmful substances from your body. Who knew cleansing could taste so good?
