Intent of the Day: Organizing Our Thoughts

The mind is a wondrous thing and sometimes it’s too busy to do any good. Whether in inspiration mode or survival mode, a key to getting anywhere is being able to keep track of your thoughts, organize your ideas and do something with it all. Rather than staying in the tornado or letting our mind run away from us, we intend to organize our thoughts!

You too? Here are 3 things to help you do the same: Continue reading

Don’t fight it.

It won’t make a difference anyway, and the end result, which is really the only result, will always be exactly where it was meant to be, even before you knew it would be there.

And this is not about giving up, conforming, confirming or conning you. But rather, it is about the thing that you know makes you tick, like a clock, and part of the new stopular culture that is the real deal.

Sorry, to interrupt. But. Can you hear it?

Sure you can. Don’t fight it. Don’t deny it. Own it. It’s been poking and stoking you for a little while now. Can you feel the relentless tapping and rapping? The kneeing and the freeing of you?

Teasing and breezing right by you, like a butterfly tornado, faster and faster, trillions of flapping wings, an infinite number of times over, until it finally gets your attention. And it never gives up, because we both know that it already gets you. It knows, that you know, that I know, that you know, the deal.

Yes, now you are letting it, and getting it. Continue reading

“Fire all your guns at once and explode into space.” – Steppenwolf, Born to Be Wild.

Hello. Are you thinking what I’m thinking?

Sure you are. You just don’t know it yet. But, you do know what I mean. Are you having the same revolutionary inner thoughts that I do? Are your neural pathways, or whatever, firing, or whatever in the synaptic patters and places creating the faces and spaces that mine do? Is your inner mind your inner mine?

Does the thought of re-invention scare you? Continue reading

The Most Basic Guide to Affirmations

There are infinite schools of thought as to how good things happen in a person’s life.
Maybe that person is just extra good.
Maybe they believe it, so it happened.
They made a deal with the Devil.
They made a deal with God.
They were lucky.
The sun lined up with Jupiter just right and the full moon was in retrograde.

I’m not a scientist, so I can neither confirm nor deny the power of the moon in retrograde, but I do know that the practice of positive affirmation isn’t a wasted one. There is something to having hope, faith and love. Believing for the best has the power to rewire your brain and help you finally put a stop to the things we are usually eager to leave behind.

Dr. Arlene Taylor specializes in speaking on brain function and she had some very interesting things to say about the best way to get your brain to respond:

According to the dictionary, the word affirm means to validate and to state positively. Practically, this defines a nurturing communications style; one in which you talk to yourself and to others in a positive manner. In general, “positives” are more powerful than “negatives.” Positives are a one-step process that creates a picture that you want the brain to follow. Negatives, on the other hand, require a two-step process. Words such as don’t are meant to convey do the opposite of the picture that was just created in the brain. This is often difficult for a mature brain to figure out and may be virtually impossible for the immature brain to compute. It might feel silly at first, but let me encourage you to speak affirmations out loud.

-Dr. Arlene Taylor, “What Does Affirmation Mean?”

Much like we do, our brains respond best to a positive environment with clear, direct communication.

What do you want?
Say them. Audibly.
It doesn’t have to be for an audience but it’s important that you AND your brain gets the message about what you’re going for.

There isn’t a right or wrong way to the words you choose, no magic spell.
So again, what do you want?
Put those desires together in a clear and direct sentence.

I am awake and alive. I have all the energy I need for today.

I am capable and strong enough to face the challenges that come my way.

I can form habits that are beneficial and long-lasting.

Choosing happiness is something I can and will do everyday.

Where are you in your life right now?
What would you like to see come into your life or change?
That’s a great place to start.
Speak what you would like to see.
Speak what you would like your brain to agree with instead of agreeing with things that aren’t necessarily any more true-

That you aren’t smart enough, likeable, pretty, strong, able.
That good things will never happen for you.
That you aren’t good enough.
That you just aren’t the kind of person who gets what they dream of.

Stop agreeing with those things consciously or subconsciously.
You are able and you are enough.
So say it.

The Science of Consciousness – With Deepak Chopra and Stuart Hameroff

Consciousness, thought, and the mind are often referred to as “hard problems” in science, but does that mean they are beyond analysis? In this conversation on The Chopra Well, doctors Deepak Chopra and Stuart Hameroff discuss the science of consciousness and the directions the study of consciousness may go in the near future.

As you probably know, Deepak is a physician, author, and explorer of consciousness. Finding ground between science and spirituality, medicine and consciousness, is one of the top priorities of his work.

Stuart Hameroff is similarly inclined. He is a physician, Professor of Anesthesiology and Psychology, and Director of the Center for Consciousness Studies at the University of Arizona in Tucson. In medical school, Hameroff became interested in intelligent behavior of microtubules, protein lattices within brain neurons and other living cells. He developed theories of microtubules as self-organizing molecular computers, and teamed with Sir Roger Penrose on the controversial Penrose-Hameroff “Orch OR” model of consciousness.

Based on quantum computing in brain microtubules, Orch OR connects brain activities to the most basic level of the universe — fundamental spacetime geometry at the Planck scale. At that level, Penrose has proposed Platonic information guiding or influencing conscious choices and perceptions. Orch OR could be seen as providing a plausibility argument for non-locality and spirituality. Hameroff also co-organizes the biennial interdisciplinary conference ‘Toward a Science of Consciousness.’

With such experienced, dedicated doctors and scientists working on the “hard problem” of consciousness, we are bound to discover more and more in the years to come!

What are your thoughts on the science of consciousness? Let us know and subscribe to The Chopra Well!

“I realized I don’t have to believe my thoughts.”

ConcentrateOur mindfulness practice is not about vanquishing our thoughts. It’s about becoming aware of the process of thinking so that we are not in a trance—lost inside our thoughts. That’s the big difference. To train in becoming mindful of thoughts can help us to notice when your mind is actively thinking, either using the label “thinking, thinking,” or identifying the kind of thought—“worrying, worrying,” “planning, planning.” Then, becoming interested in what’s really happening right here. Coming home to the sensations in your body, your breath, the sounds around you, the life of the moment.

As our mindfulness practice deepens we become more aware of our thoughts. This offers us the opportunity to assess them and notice that much of the time our thoughts are not really serving us. Many thoughts are driven by fear and lock us into insecurity. During our residential meditation retreats, one of the biggest breakthroughs people share with us is:

“I realized I don’t have to believe my thoughts.”

Training in mindfulness allows our minds to have a choice. At the moment in which you pause and realize that these thoughts are not really serving me, you have the option to come back to presence. This process of choosing becomes more powerful as you realize how thoughts can create suffering and separation. They create an “us” and a “them.” They create judgment and end up making us feel bad about ourselves.

In those moments when you’re lost in thought, what if you could pause and say, “OK, it is just a thought” That is revolutionary. That can change your life!

Now, the key is that we approach this with a gentleness and kindness. Each time we recognize thinking and come back into the present moment with gentleness and kindness, we are planting a seed of mindfulness. We are creating a new habit—a new way of being in the world. We quiet down the incessant buzz of thoughts in our mind. We take refuge in what is true—the aliveness and tenderness and mystery of the present moment—rather than in the story line of our thoughts.

“Ten thousand flowers in spring, the moon in autumn,
a cool breeze in summer, snow in winter.
If your mind isn’t clouded by unnecessary things,
this is the best season of your life.”— Wu Men

Thought Manifests As Word

Thought Manifests as Word

"Thought manifests as word.

Word manifests as deed.

Deed develops into habit.

And habit hardens into character.

So watch the thought and its ways with care.

And let it spring from love

Born out of concern for all beings."

The Buddha (563?-483? B.C.E.)

In a Perfect World

I was recently talking with a friend about an idea I have been mulling, concerning the clash of acceptance and our own values. One comment in a reply that stood out for me was, "in a perfect world…"

But what if it already is? Surely the only thing that separates us from the perfect world is our knowledge, thinking and vision?

The doubt that is central to struggling with this being a perfect world is, quite frankly, not natural. At least it is not natural from the world’s perspective. Think about it. Nature doesn’t doubt for one instant that things are perfect, exactly as they should be. Nature knows, and the physical world does. If the world sees itself as perfect, why can’t we?

One idea I have is that we are simply caught in our own individual take on things. Like the child stranded amidst parents that rage, the teen that confuses emotion with knowledge, and the adult that is puppeteered by hidden wounds and values, our doubt is matched only by our individuality.

I was intrigued by the August issue of "Sky & Telescope" cover story. It turns out the sun, the physical light of our lives, is not acting quite as anticipated. Scientists are now discussing the idea that the sun may be approaching what is called a "sunspot minimum," something that happens every few centuries at most. Sunspots result in the sun producing more heat. Fewer sunspots would mean reduced radiation and, more importantly, a sunspot minimum "could partially offset global warming."

What if the physical universe is exactly as it should be? Without any direct interference from us the natural order of things can see fit to reduce heat from the sun at a time when it is most needed; in a time when concern for the environment is beginning to truly surge for the first time in our knowledge. What other unanticipated factors are there? Or better yet, so what?

I hear the statement "in a perfect world…" and I am here. Should such a utopian view arrest you? Does an optimistic passage from a far off writer deserve such faith? I hope not. Any choice you come to make will only mean anything real if it is backed by knowledge, by a reasoning of your vision. And so if you cannot accept this far off view of utopia, I ask only that you keep eyes and mind open for signs and clues.
