Made in the Shade(s): The 411 on sunglasses

In some parts of the Islamic world, women are required to wear burqa’s. Now, this is not a political column so I am approaching this solely from a beauty angle. I believe they are the secret to everlasting youth. Give me a burqa and I will remain ageless forever. I mean, who really can tell how old you are — or if you need to lose a few inches on your hips and thighs — if you are covered from head to toe. Add a pair of wraparound sunglasses and you’ll take off another twenty years. (This sure beats my other suggestion – giving all your friends and business contacts a candle. Since everyone looks infinitely better in candlelight, you’ll finally be able to go out in the daylight!)

Well, being that a burqa is not part of my religious traditions, let’s just talk about the sunglasses. Truth be told, I would wear them morning and night if they didn’t so diminish my vision after dusk. My aim is not to look like an out-of-work actor, hoping to be recognized. Rather, it’s to hide the fact that I could probably use an eye lift —not to mention to actually be able to see since I need to always wear prescription glasses, sun or otherwise. But with endless choices available, how do you know which are the best to benefit both your eyes and your budget?

While status conscious fashionistas might spend hundreds to get the latest look from Tom Ford, Gucci or Prada, others buy expensive glasses simply because they are worried that cheaper shades might not give them adequate sun protection. So I asked Dr. Mirwat Sami, a Houston-based Board-certified Ophthalmologist specializing in Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, to shed some light on what to look for when selecting a pair of tinted spectacles — and why.

Dr. Sami explains that, “Excessive exposure to UV light from sand or pavement reflections can burn the eye’s surface. Think of it like sunburn on the skin, and as the damage accumulates over the years, you can do some real harm to your eyesight without even knowing or feeling it.” Indeed, the American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends quality sunglasses as a preventative, provided they screen out 99% to 100% of UV light. So the questions is, are designer sunglasses superior when it comes to providing eye protection?

The following are eight suggestions from Dr. Sami to help ensure that you are making the right choice from every angle. Continue reading

From Intent.com: Big Stuff On It’s Way

“If everyone is moving forward together,
then success takes care of itself.”
-Henry Ford

There’s something unstoppable about a group of people dreaming big in conjunction.
It’s like one truly passionate person creates this open door for more and more people to dream big and join the party. It just takes that one to be bold, to have the audacity to believe that they could be the one who sees the vision in their head become a reality. It’s that one who gives you permission to be audacious along with them.

So, it’s Monday. If you were waiting for the one, here are three.
Three images to click on leading to projects that are in the dream phase.
Three people who are saying “this is where I’m headed because I believe in this.”

What Does Memorial Day Weekend Have to do with Work-Life Balance?

It is the Friday before a long weekend. A weekend, which I used to really look forward to, because it was the ‘start of summer’ in upstate NY. But now that I have lived in Austin for almost 4 years… summer has been here for a few months. So it is just a nice long weekend. I truly enjoy the balance of work and life these days.
What does it take to find that perfect balance? I believe it takes a big vision! A vision of your life that is bigger than you are. From this perspective, all aspects of our lives are important and the tone of the day is actually the MOST important thing that we have control over.
Where does that tone or culture come from? Always us! So consciously decide what the tone of your days are going to be this weekend and in the weeks ahead. Name the tone. Write it down for yourself. For example, it might be ‘summer time chilling’ — or next week at work, it might be ‘relaxed and productive.‘ Getting clear and conscious about the tone that we choose to stay in, is a leadership skill. It is about not letting the world knock you off your intention for that day or that moment.
From a place with a powerful vision… each aspect of our lives deserves honor, respect and attention and there is no room for guilt and ‘shoulds’. Go with the flow of life and enjoy the balance that life naturally creates when we let go of all the things that we ‘should’ do.
So on this Memorial Day weekend; be sure that you have a vision bigger than you are. The reason that we have a day called Memorial Day is for those that actually knew already that their lives were about something bigger than they were.
‘A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.’  ~Joseph Campbell
Happy Memorial Day weekend.

How I Met Steven Spielberg… Your Excuses Get You Nowhere. Commitment is Key!

Your excuses get you nowhere.

They just keep you where you already are.

We tend to make so many excuses for why we don’t follow our dreams and visions.  Most of them seem quite legitimate and reasonable. But if you want to fulfill your dream, you have to be a little unreasonable.

If you listen to your mind’s made up excuses, it will keep you paralyzed and procrastinating forever.

If you listen to those naysayers, it will cost you your dreams and waste your precious time.

So, what excuses are you making for not pursuing your dream?

I don’t have enough time.

I don’t know how.

I don’t have the right connections.

I don’t have enough money.

I have to many real responsibilities to take care of.

I understand you have responsibilities in life. A mortgage. A job. Children. All well and great. Just make sure you don’t allow them to stop you from following your real heart’s vision. Sometimes due to our fear of stepping into our greatness, or next level we will unconsciously create structures in our life to be responsible for as a way to stay busy or to self sabotage our ability to move forward with our dream. All this does is keep you trapped doing what you think you need to do to survive, rather than following your dream. It’s a sneaky trap.

No matter what you may have going on in your life, you also have a deep responsibility to the vision that you were given. When you are unwilling to compromise this and take action, the universe will rise to meet you with the same resolve.

The universe is already committed. It birthed you here into this world. And look at all it does each day. Are you willing to commit at that same level to your creative endeavor?

The fulfillment of your dream is not simply a matter of resources. But about your resourcefulness. How resourceful are you willing to be? How committed are you to your vision?

There is always a way. Always. Perhaps not the way you have always been doing it. But the way it’s seeking to happen for your highest good, which may not be the way you thought. So get yourself out the way so the way it’s meant to be can unfold.

The obstacles you might face along the way are simply opportunities to expand yourself, innovate and tap into other dimensions of your creative power that has yet to be expressed.

The fulfillment of the dream you have cannot be fulfilled by being the same person you have always been. It will require you shed the limitations of your previous self so that you stand in the greatness that your dream is demanding of you now.

Living an extraordinary life is not for wimps or excuse makers. It requires that you be bold and accountable. It’s not about  winning or losing. It’s about playing full out and giving everything you have to each moment, leaving nothing left on the table. So, lick the plate of your life clean.

The road less travelled may seem scary at first. But if what you want to do hasn’t been done then neither are it’s limitations known either.

Anyone can be a visionary when the lights are on. But how about when the path is dark. The real vision is to be able to see the light of your hearts vision even when all around you seems dark. You might have no road map for where your dream is taking you. But this is the time to trust your ‘Souls GPS’ to navigate you home. It’s your vision that will bring light to the path you are to travel.

So, what actions can you take each day consistently towards your dream?

Just one.

Each day.

You can believe in the insanity of your excuses. Or you can choose to believe the power of your dreams.

Your dreams are the way in which the Divine seeks to dance in physical form through you.

The universe will respond to you at the level of your commitment.

Your excuses will get you nowhere.

Your commitment is key.

For real.

Are You Standing In Your Power?

As we head into February, it is important to reconnect with the vision of the most incredible year of our lives. This is a time when it’s easy for our visions to fade or for us to get distracted by the busy-ness of our daily lives. But one way to ensure that we continue to commit ourselves to creating the best year of our lives is to claim all of our power by using this Right Question: Am I standing in my power or am I trying to please another?

It doesn’t matter who we are — how rich, famous, talented, or educated. At some point each of us will face the choice of claiming our power or giving it away by trying to please someone else. Pleasing others is a habit that some of us developed when we were young. We learned that if we did something special — if we were cute, danced, used good manners, or received good grades in school — we would gain the affection and the approval we desired. Some of us learned that we had to forsake our own needs to fit in with our families. We kept our opinions to ourselves. We stayed silent, even when we longed to share our views. We followed along with the crowd rather than making waves. For most of us, this pattern of behavior began in our interactions with our parents. Now this habit is embedded deep in our psyches. We’ve learned to give away our power for the approval of others. We deny ourselves the gift of our voice, our opinions, and our authentic expression. Obligations, “shoulds”, and guilt become the dictators of our actions.

When we’re stuck in the pattern of people-pleasing, we do not have access to making clear choices. We are driven to fulfill others’ needs in order to be loved. In order to stand in our power, we must have the option of saying no. We have to be willing to give up the need for others’ approval and give up our need to make others happy. The truth is that not everyone will like us and it’s not our job to make others happy — just as it isn’t the job of others to make us happy.

It’s so easy to give our power away to oblige our partners or console our families. But if the choices we make rob us of too much of our private time, if they deprive us of our joy or our inner peace, if they prevent from expressing our creative gifts, then ultimately they are violations we are perpetrating against our own souls. These violations do not affect just us in negative ways, they affect all those around us. When we don’t take care of ourselves because we are trying to make others happy, we build up resentment toward the very people we are trying to please.

The Right Question, “Am I standing in my power or am I trying to please another?” allows us to stand in our power and to be clear about our priorities. If I choose to ignore myself when I am in desperate need of my own attention, I will resent those I have deemed more important than me. Even though I might spend the day trying to be happy and pleasant, underneath I will feel angry because I have made a choice that depleted me. This underlying resentment will inevitably come out no matter how hard I try to deny what I feel.

We set ourselves up to lose every time we give away our power and minimize the importance of our own needs. Many people I work with truly believe that they don’t matter. They think it’s okay to abandon themselves as long as they are making someone else happy. They tell themselves that they are strong enough to withstand the neglect as long as it’s in the name of making someone else happy. Or they tell themselves that it’s their job to be the sacrificial lamb. This is often what we were taught when we were young, and it sets us up to violate ourselves and play the part of the martyr. Each time we ignore our own needs to please another, we disconnect from our own ability to love and nurture ourselves. Please remember that pleasing another is not the same as caring for another. The important thing to realize is that we can’t really care for another if we do not first care for ourselves. By consulting ourselves to see whether the choices we make come from a place of standing in our power or one of needing to please another, we are forced to confront the subtle and not so subtle ways in which we violate ourselves.

Transformational Action Step

This is the week to reclaim your power in every aspect of your life. You may feel that you have your power in some areas of your life, but certain people and situations are bound to come along that will temporarily blindside you. It is precisely at those moments that I invite you to remember to breathe deeply, check in with yourself, and ask yourself this important question: Am I standing in my power or am I trying to please another? It’s time to take back your power!

A Vision For The Lion And The Lamb

Monday, 9/26
A Vision for the Lion and the Lamb
“We see a world where:
The lion lies down with the lamb;
There are no parasites or predators of any kind;
We communicate easily with all creatures and creation;
The varying climates are always comfortable for all,
The homeless and others may have whatever kind of home, wherever they choose;
There are no debts or creditors;
Land is not owned but shared cooperatively;
Talent is recognized, nurtured and flourishes;
We follow our natural curiosity to learn and accomplish whatever interests us;
All families, on and off planet, are reunited;
We travel wherever we want without tickets, baggage or passports;
Political boundaries disappear and regions are defined by their culture.”

A Vision For Lightheartedness

A Vision for Lightheartedness

“We see a world full of happy people – people who are having fun, laughing, playing innocently and enjoying their lives to the fullest. We see people everywhere taking time to recharge and recreate themselves by getting away from their work and regular routines for awhile. And we see people forgiving themselves and everyone else, regardless of the situations and circumstances.

For, in forgiving and letting all of the cares and concerns of life go, we have found a balance that allows us to function more efficiently, more happily, more joyfully. We see the world with new eyes. We have lightened our load, and in doing so, the seriousness and importances of life have given way to a feeling of peace within. Our hearts are lighter, which causes our bodies to be lighter, and the whole of our lives to be lighter. We have come into alignment with our core nature, which is light.

A Vision For Trusting The Universe

A Vision for Trusting the Universe

“We see a world where we have looked at the past long enough to know that we have always been taken care of; that the food, clothing, shelter and experiences we needed have always come to us; and that the Highest Good has always been active in our lives. We see that the only things which brought unhappiness, discomfort and suffering to us were of our own making, and that, now, we can truly let go and let the Universe take care of us as She sees fit.

Accordingly, we are no longer struggling, stressing or striving because we are trusting in the Universe to bring us everything we need in the exact moment that we need it, or before. We accept what we have, create what we choose, and give thanks for it all. This is the path that leads to freedom and all good things.”

A Vision For The Second Coming

A Vision for the Second Coming

“We see a world where we are all aware that the Second Coming has already come; where we know that the Christed and Enlightened Ones in all religions, in all lands, in all walks of life have already returned; that They reach out to us in the exact same measure that we reach out to them; and that They are constantly making their presences known to us in our hearts, in our minds, and in our souls – even now as we share this Vision.

Their messages are coming freely to us through the subtle, loving voices we hear within us; through the words of our caring friends; through the uplifting books we’re magically led to pick up; through the sights and sounds of Great Nature; through the smiles of the little children in our lives; and through the Love we feel when we breathe deeply into our heart of hearts.

Indeed, They are coming to us when we let go and allow ourselves to feel as good as we can possibly feel. For it is through our feelings that we access our spirituality. It is through our feelings that we discover that the Second Coming of the One we have been waiting for is the Second Coming of our own Higher Self, newly reawakened and lifted up to take Its place among all the angels in Heaven.”
