“He who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe is as good as dead.” — Albert Einstein
According to psychologist Nicholas Humphrey, the human capacity to experience awe has been biologically selected through the process of evolution. By imbuing a sense of cosmic significance to what might otherwise be considered a meaningless existence, awe inspires us to work harder — to move beyond mere survival to flourish and thrive.
The desire to know truth and understand existence brings immense pleasure — it “feeds our exploratory voyage, our scientific inquiry, our technological development, and even our poetic self-regard.” In short, awe is the driving force behind human innovation. Awe is awesome.
