This week we’re very excited to announce the start of a new interview series at Intent Blog that will feature in-depth conversations with the top yoga instructors and wellness experts at GaiamTV. GaiamTV is a lifestyle media website that features thousands of online videos and yoga classes designed “to nourish your mind, body, and soul.” Every Tuesday and Thursday we’ll introduce you to a new expert. First up, one of our very own bloggers at Intent… Kia Miller!
Thanks for taking the time to speak with us Kia. So we hear you teach a style of yoga that combines Kundalini and Vinyasa yoga. Those are two very different practices! How do you bring the two together?
My teaching style grew organically out of my love of Ashtanga/Vinyasa and Kundalini yoga. Two very different styles that blend beautifully for me! The Vinyasa gets people grounded and in their bodies. It is an excellent way to warm-up and prepare the body for the more energy specific kriyas. The Kundalini practices — both kriyas and meditations — are transformative in nature and allow us glimpses into our deeper nature. The more we practice, the longer we are able to maintain higher states of awareness and connection. I recommend it for everyone!
What drew you to Kundalini Yoga?
At first I did not ‘get’ Kundalini Yoga. I thought it was strange. It took a while for me to tune into the subtlety of the work. Yogi Bhajan spoke a lot about activating the navel point and tapping into our own source of energy. This resonated with me, and my first ‘experience’ of the expansive nature of this practice came after doing an energizing abdominal focused kriya not unlike the one offered here on Gaiam. From that point I was hooked.
What is your intent in sharing this practice with the world?
My intent is to share the profound teachings of yoga and the vast growth mentally and spiritually I have experienced by practicing in this way. I am a happier, more content and empowered person, it is this that I wish to share with others. These yogic tools are here to help us to stay grounded and connected to our truth and wisdom, especially in this pivotal time of change in the world. Blessings and Sat Nam.
Activate your internal fire (agni) with a combination of Vinyasa poses and Kundalini energy work. Centered on the breath of fire, which helps you draw in life force (prana) to transform yourself, this energy-boosting practice will aid digestion, increase vitality, and help you process thoughts and emotions. This video is great for all levels of practitioners, including beginners.
