Thinking on One’s Feet

One of my colleagues at Visions Medical Center has taken to calling me when he’s seeing a patient who needs a nudge to acknowledge the spiritual aspect of what’s causing their ill health. He puts me on speakerphone, and says, “Susan, I’m sitting here with _______. I’ve been seeing her for ___ months/years, and her principle complaint is _______________. I think you might be able to help her.” Then he stops.

I usually greet the patient, and wait in silence till I get guidance about the person. Sometimes it comes immediately. Other times, there’s a delay. No matter. My job is simply to show up, show up, and show up some more. A lot of the time, I get what’s going on instantly. It’s helping to build my practice at Visions, and I get to serve our constituency which gives me great joy.

What is that thing about being able to think on one’s feet?

In my case, I’m not sure it’s thinking. Instead, I think it’s allowing myself to know what I’m meant to know. We all have this ability, and it gets stronger when we use it. The key is to allow the now to inform us right then in that moment.

There is a delicious story told about Ella Fitzgerald who, many years ago, entered an amateur talent contest—as a dancer. The Edwards Sisters had the slot before hers, and, according to Ella, they were the “dancingest girls you ever did see.” Instead of feeling defeated, or that those Edwards Sisters were a tough act to follow, Ella thought on her feet. She stood up, sang her heart out, and became “The First Lady of Song” for many decades.

The moment is all any of us have. Showing up in the moment is what creates wonderful moments that add together into minutes, hours, days and lives. Maybe you think you’re a dancer. Or maybe, like Barbra Streisand, you’re “an actress who sings.” No matter. Show up, and let the moment provide what moments do, the fullness of Divinity in all its marvelous disguises.

P. S. If you’re in the Boston area, and decide you’re interested in some Spiritual Alignment, feel free to call Visions Medical Center, 781-431-1333, and make an appointment. I’m there on Wednesdays.
