Three Tips for Reducing Anxiety

Would you like to be more relaxed, calm and creative, even in the midst of chaos?

Three solutions that have worked wonders in allowing me to be more calm and grounded, and therefore more creative, even when things are crazy, are these: Love, Laughter, Meditation. When you consistently bring them into your life, every day, miracles happen. It’s true. If it can happen for me, it can happen for you.  I used to be a reactive ball of tension. Now, I stay calm, no matter what the situation.

LOVE

Love is the great healer. It helps you come down from the head(where anxiety resides) and into your heart(where love, trust and wisdom reside). When you feel loved and loving, anxiety disappears. Love and anxiety cannot co-exist. The power of love brings light to the darkness. The secret is to focus on love and anxiety automatically dissolves. Love yourself. Receive love from others. Hug a friend, a tree, your pet. Make a practice of this every day, even if it is just for one moment at the beginning. Trust in love. It will not let you down. This  technique can help you deepen your experience.

FOUR-MINUTE MEDITATION: Opening to Self-Love

BENEFITS

This technique allows you to open to your own intrinsic and unique beauty and to rediscover your essential value. It brings you deeper insight, understanding, and self-healing and opens the way for more positive and loving relationships with others.

If you totally accepted yourself just as you are, would you have any problems at all? Sit silently and see if you can gain insight into the ways you reject yourself. What fears and beliefs stop you from being loving and compassionate with yourself? When you gain a clearer understanding of these inner mechanisms, the old habits of

self-rejection, doubt and anxiety begin to fade away.

LAUGH

You can’t be anxious and laughing at the same time! Think about it. When you are fully laughing all your problems, albeit momentarily, disappear. In those moments you regain your innate joy, perspective returns and you get a glimpse of life without anxiety. The more you make a practice of laughter, the moments of joy grow and anxiety automatically dissolves.

Laughter acts as a bridge to bring you down from the head into your heart and deeper into your inner silence and wisdom.  Laughter increases your capacity to love and be loved. It is a sexy, attractive energy. Laugh every day!

Do the laughter meditation for as long, or as short, amount of time as you like. It’s great with a friend(s).

MEDITATE

Do you have thirty seconds for meditation? This technique helps you integrate meditation into your day on a consistent basis. Meditation harmonizes your energy. I know of no better way to bring peace into every aspect of your life than through a regular practice of meditation.

Meditation: Thirty-Second Stop

BENEFITS

This method almost instantly brings you to awareness, helps you relax and dissolves anxiety. It helps you to remember yourself and to develop the qualities of the watcher. With regular practice, by and by a subtle relaxed alertness begins to weave itself into your day.It is so easy to lose ourselves in the activities of our day. If you stop your body totally, then the mind, because it has been taken unawares, also stops. And for those split seconds, with the mind stopped in its tracks, you are there, in the present moment.

You can do this meditation while walking along the street, folding laundry, or sorting files at the office. While you are engaged in one of these activities, stop. Freeze. For thirty seconds just be present with whatever is happening. Are you breathing? How does your body feel? Where is your mind? Where are you? In the present? The past? The future? Watch, observe, and notice yourself, without judgment. Then continue with your activity.

You can do this technique by yourself or with a friend. You might ask your friend to surprise you with a thirty-second stop when you’re walking down the street together. Or you can do it yourself anytime—at work, on the bus, in the grocery store, in an elevator, doing the dishes. But remember, it must be done suddenly.
