The Ultimate Sacrifice

Walking by the lake today I noticed our two baby ducks are swimming alone. I immediately began to cry. Their precious mother must be dead. She was an amazing mother. Every time our dogs got close to her little ducklings when they were first born, she would fling her wings at the dogs and dive toward our dogs to protect her babies. I watched her for weeks fiercely protect and guide her little ducklings as she taught them the lessons of survival. She paid the ultimate sacrifice. She diverted some attack from a predator to save her little ones. It brought up so many profound feelings in me about the nature of motherhood in all creation. Yes, we have that seed planted deep within our souls to protect our children at all costs, even our own life. So many times my husband and I have had lengthy discussions on why mothers embody such self sacrifice. It’s a soul issue. We conceived them, we grew them in our bellies, we fed them with our milk, we sheltered them, protected them, taught them, loved them and ultimately had to release them into the world. Mother duck did her job. She raised her little babies to be old enough to survive on their own. God bless you Mother Duck!
