Value of Conformity vs Individuality

Many conversations here have sparked dialogue on Oneness, individual ‘s spirits, meaning of life and many other timeless questions.  I just pose a different take on the individual ‘s value vs the value of the whole.  I have no answers, but would love to hear your perspectives.

This morning I’m enjoying the cool of the morning, before it returns to the hundred degree heat we’ve had of late.  The "mundane" task of mowing the lawn seems like a great way to be in the momment, enjoying the Zen of it ( earlier it was shoveling out horse stalls…)

As I push my little manual mower, blades whirring, back and forth across the sprouting lawn, I remember a Japanese saying.  It went something like "The tall nail gets the hammer."  It was a lesson that they referenced to remi

nd people to conform and not "stick- out".  When we lived in Okinawa, I thought that was a terrible thing to try to teach people!  They should be ask to seek their own path, be their own person, not conform.  I then slipped back into the task I was preforming… making all the blades of grass a uniform heigth…….

And on the heals of that came the reminder that alot of what we aim to achieve is Unification w/God. ( Source, Spirit, or what ever best suits your path and understanding.)  So, we ultimately strive for losing our individuality…..?

My resting point became– I am part of the Divine Rainbow, right now I just want to experience being– GREEN,  (or  RED or whatever best suits my current incarnated life.)

So???  Please sound in!

About robynsquest

I am stepping into the second half of life with the intention of it being lived more fully and consciously. The Sage within deserves to be recognized and revered. To that end I feel grateful that the younger stages of my life are behind me and I am now into the adult children and grandchildren phase. I love seeing the world again thru those young, innocent eyes of wonder. Life is rich, and I am more aware of how each facet of life has added to the gem I have as my life now.

I have worn may hats throughout my life, Daughter, Sister, Mother, Wife, Ex Wife, Single Mother, Sales Rep, 911 operator, Hypnotherapist, Reiki  Level II, but the constants have been- Optimist, Seeker, and Earth-Mother.

I do know that there are still aspects to uncover, and honor. That is why Intent has been the perfect place for me to search for like minded and spiritually savey people. What a great community I have found here for sharing support, quotes, ahah's and favorite teachings.

what is interesting about this is when we search for these things,we use our senses to find out what feels good to us..we use our ego to discover that we dont need the ego then you ask if the ego is less important why bother, lets go straight to unity. but you are supposed to use your talent to be of service yet this again is a function of the ego its like the tallest blade of grass probably has the best chance of reseeding and after it does we say.."there will be no showing off here",,,CHOP! this is the rats nest that is my brain,,haha…but at least i stayed true to your wonderful analogy

    Robbyn,

Very interesting blog. It brought several things to mind.

First your comment of: "…thought that was a terrible thing to try to teach people! They should be ask to seek their own path…"

I agree. We cannot actually "teach" anyone anything. All we can do is share of our own experiences so that others may be able to see their path a little more clearly — having heard an example of what is possible, and hopefully numerous examples. And to me, even THAT "should" only be shared in response to an asking. I am reminded of my oft-quoted phrase from Abraham's teachings. "If we are trying to answer questions that have not been asked, the very BEST we can hope to achieve is to ANNOY the other person."

Also, your comment of: "…on the individual 's value vs the value of the whole."

I see them as the same, and yet different. We are the whole, and yet we choose individual expressions and perspective of that "whole." We each are in the process of expanding the whole as we expand our individualness. I see it as a symbiotic relationship, like two hands washing each other. Each valuable in it's own right, and yet the total is greater than the sum of it's parts.

And: "we ultimately strive for losing our individuality…..?"

I don't think we do strive for this. I think we strive to be able to choose between the two perspectives, and to be able to have greater and greater 'control' over that choice, in both our physical and non-physical states. I don't think we ever lose our individuality, we are always 'aware' of our individual "me-ness" — always — but we are striving for a greater expansion of our ability to choose. Even here in physical, we desire and seek connection (to Source/God and to each other) AND desire to express our individuality.

But then I am learning that most of life is not in the either/or spectrum, it is nearly always a both/and paradox.

Your conclusion: "I am part of the Divine Rainbow, right now I just want to experience being– GREEN, (or RED or whatever best suits my current incarnated life.)"

This sums it up beautifully, I think. And I don't think we change that at any point — I think we will always want the experience of both.

I, too, would love to hear others' viewpoints and perspectives on this. Fascinating!

    Lovin' You, My SAS,

    Thank you Kitty–

I have held to your Abraham quote since I saw it first a couple days ago…

I definatly serves us well… if I remember it.

Your input on the thought paradox is very much my perspective too.

I constantly am in awe of –damn can't think of the word– "the sum being greater than it's parts"– I have always had a problem with black and white thinking.

    Maybe because I'm Yellow today!!

    Super day to you SAS!!

    Robbyn,

It's funny — in my earlier years I really WAS into black-and-white thinking. To me, then, it was either right or wrong, good or bad, etc. etc.

Then I "found" shades of grey, that maybe everything wasn't all black-and-white.

And THEN — I found techincolor! Yeeeeeeeeeeeee Haaaaaaaaawwwwww! I see that nearly everything is actually BOTH/AND — and life has not been the same since.

So, to your yellow I applaud you today — whilst I be in shades of greeeeeennnn. [grin] And tomorrow — who knows???

Lovin' Bein' SASes (that sounds funny, but I like it anyway!)

wow,i never noticed but we are both over enders……………………………………………………well I am aware of my structure or lack of it because i spend more time erasing periods than I do writing.

    SAS is as SAS does…

    Kitty-

Right now I'm a bit BROWN, but better than BLACK AND BLUE!!!

I just had an adendum thought to the grass mowing… If I chose to let it grow, "and prosper", then some horse would come along and "trim it" anyway…. I do know that the hore would vote in on the 2nd option being more inspired/ good/correct/ lofty.

( And we KNOW what SPIRITUAL beings horses are.) But could I hope for Universal acceptance of this point of view …say from the neighbor or my landlord?

John I adore having company in the run on sentence club!!

    Robbyn,

But just think of the time savings and energy savings. Not only do you not need to mow the lawn, and still get it trimmed, but it gets fertilized in one motion as well. As for the neighbors and landlord, just tell them it's medicinal — a true horse lovers' AROMA THERAPY. : )

    Kitty

I like to think of "run-on-sentences-writers" as minds that are sooooooo far out in front of the pack, that they just don't have TIME for all that punctuation stuff! (Could be that I'm one of 'em too, so rationalization is a good way to go, huh?)

  11. robynsquest September 2, 2009 at 7:45 am #

    Kitty-

    ABSOLUTELY– to everything you said!

And you made JOURNEY very happy too…

(for those of you who haven't picked up on it previously, Journey is my horse, also refered to as J or the J man.- often the word is bantered about w/double meaning.)

We have a conformity appt w/ the shoer this AM..

  12. Kitty Coleman September 2, 2009 at 7:58 am #

    Robbyn,

"A conformity appt." — now THAT is funny!

So how does His Highness Mr. J. like the shoer? When I first got my favorite Morgan (if I can actually PICK a favorite) thought that the guy with the nails was there to torture him. Took me months to get him over his terror of farriers. Then, once he figured out it was cool, I could barely keep him on 3 legs while the shoer was working 'cause he'd want to lay down and sleep! No happy mediums sometimes with these amazing creatures, huh? But what delight to know and love them. Enjoy your fur-faced four-legged angel today, and give him and extra hug/treat from me.

    Lovin' Your Horsey Lovin' Heart,

  13. robynsquest September 2, 2009 at 2:21 pm #

    Kitty-

I doubt if he had shoes or real trims for years before I got him… but in the past life of his in the show ring, I'm sure he was pampered. I have to laugh when you refer to him as his Highness… I took photo's last time the farrier came… There is one w/J w/ his foot up on the stand like they're trying on his glass slipper… I'll forward it to yur e-mail, you'll get a laugh. I actually just got them trimmed, and took the shoes off.. not riding much, and he has proven to grow out even, and strikes even as the wear has shown. Love an Easy keeper!!

I think we need to establish a long distance run-on sentence club!! Any takers?

Oh I love you two (and you too John). There is never a dull moment around here is there?

This is fantastic. First I have to say, Kitty you just gave me a second giggle for the day (the other – well you know what that is) and now the AROMA – therapy. That is too much!

I really am not going to comment a lot on this but to just say I totally feel we should be individuals at all time and respect others individuality. We are taught to fit in and not rock the boat, to not stand out in the crowd and just be good little soldiers and follow the trends. I always see sheep and cattle when I think of this.

And I used to be the black and white viewer – always one or the other with no in between. Then, like Kitty I started to see that well maybe shades of grey are possible. Now I see the colors and it is the only way to me now. When I see the rainbows on my wall in the morning coming from the crystals I have hanging in the window I am delighted beyond words and smile and say thank you! Technicolor is the only way!

Thanks Robbyn for this. Sorry it took me a few days to get to it. I am just trying to get to a few blogs – this "Mad Woman" (Kitty I will have to tell you about that as Robbyn knows what it means) is so far behind.

    Thanks SAS et all,

    Linda

  15. Kitty Coleman September 4, 2009 at 11:05 am #

    Linda,

Well, in keeping with the "theme" of this blog, I refuse to conform. Equine Aroma Therapy is one of my all-time favorites, which so totally "pegs" me as a horsey addict — and I love it! [grin]

I absolutely agree, to respect and value each and every person and their individual path is the only way to approach anyone. The diversity is what makes the physical realm such a marvelous and wondrous "place" to be, all that Technicolor!

OK, tell me about that "Mad woman" thing, you know what they say about curiosity and cats.

    Appreciatin' All,

    Kitty

I find that self discovery or finding things on my own is the key to making it valid in my mind.

Now how these Ideas somehow magically are put before me is another topic.

JOHNS TWO CENTS-and im leaving the aroma therapy discussion alone
