Values-based New Year’s Resolutions

possibilitiesThe only part of "resolution" that works is the resolve you have to be the best and highest version of yourself. 2009 is almost here and you’ve been in that mode of goals and resolutions, have been reading all the systems available that guarantee all manner of success if followed. Yet, each one is either too complicated or too dry or too mechanical to really implement. Three weeks into the new year, you blame yourself and continue to diminish who you are!

Goals are tricky. Obviously you have some and defining what they are and taking action is plain commonsense. Interestingly "goal" comes from Middle English gol, meaning boundary or limit. It would be more useful if it meant summit! On the other hand "resolve" originates in dissolve and release. That’s a little closer; dissolving limits, releasing all that no longer works for you.

Goals and resolutions as commonly articulated create a kind of neurosis which is burdensome. There’s too much pressure and a sense of not being able to perform. Many times goals and resolutions are inorganic, in the realm of "shoulds" and "keeping upsies." They stem from external sources, are inauthentic and drive you to distraction, leading to what is judged as failure.

I’m not saying don’t implement proven methods. I am saying bring it all closer to your heart as well, because that’s where your strength, longevity and steady application reside. If you want to implement real change it has to come from an authentic place inside you. A place which recognizes your worth, quiets the critical gremlin voice, is generous with self-love and forgiveness, and yet doesn’t submit to latency.

If you source your life’s creations from your authentic self, there’s much less struggle, confusion and panic. Goals and resolutions ripen fuller if they are native to your natural self. Your natural self already contains who you are today and all the potential of who you are in the future, all the possibilities. A key resource here is your values. Base your creations on your values. Perhaps your values need a dusting and polishing. Perhaps some no longer fit. Perhaps some demand your reclarification and recommitment. There may be new values you have to include as you’ve grown over time. Come into the fullness of what truly lights up your being.

Values-based motivation and action brings organic creation. It’s unforced and longlasting. There’s real power in such goals and resolutions. You are free from guilt and tension because it’s a system-wide approach that doesn’t recoil from unmet benchmarks. In fact such judgements don’t play in. There’s simply peace about it and ‘success’ has many faces. You do in fact do the work though, there’s no getting around that. Root your growth internally and make sure there’s good in it for others, your community and the world, and 2009 will be your stellar year!

I live in a goal driven world in the tech sector, but here is my personal goal for 2009: I am just going to be here, really be here. I'll take the ride and see where it goes… I will keep looking around me and touching where I am needed, but I will be my best just really being here.

Did I mention that while I am here I might work out some, eat healthy, and remember to clean up my room? But that really is only cause I am already going to be here… :-)

That's simple, excellent & true Nina. Worry is about the future. Anger is about the past. Neither are now, and now is the only moment that is truly available to us.
