Waking Up

Question:

I have recently started changing my life. I now meditate, do yoga every day and eat healthier. I have already reaped many benefits of changing my routine. I have more energy, I am less stressed and just happier in general but there is one obstacle I can’t seem to overcome – I have troubled getting up in the morning! I used to think it was simply exhaustion that kept me in bed but I’m no longer as near as tired as I used to be and I’m still having trouble. Not getting up on time interferes with my daily routine and meditation practice – please help!

Answer:

If you are getting enough sleep at night, but have difficulty in getting up early enough, then you it is probably just your old habits and associations that need to be restructured. Before you go to bed at night tell yourself the time you are going to wake up in the morning. I don’t recommend jarring alarm clocks, but if you can set some soothing music to play at the time you want to get up that will work. I have even heard of clocks that will play mantras or prayers instead of alarms. Ideally, your intention to wake up  will stir you even before the clock plays the music. Get up, brush your teeth and shower. If you want, you can combine your shower with a gentle massage. Afterward, drink a glass of warm water with some fresh lemon in it. Now you can begin your morning meditation.

Once you have established this morning routine for a month, you will have reset your morning rhythms so that you will look forward to getting out of bed and greeting the day while everything is still fresh and quiet.

and before you go to sleep, tell yourself that you can't wait to get up in the morning and get at the day . . . AND MEAN IT! another thing you can do is start your day doing something that makes you feel good, so that you polarize your attitude positively for the rest of the day.

Waking Up

Blissfully nothing…

And then darkness. Night, just before dawn. A quiet room, the sound of soft and regular breathing. The feeling of warmth and comfort. Bed sheets. A clock, ticking away time.

So this is what I inhabit now. This sleeping person, in this moonlit room. Toe. Foot. Leg. Human body. A name and gender. A world view. I am still not convinced that I want to leave no thing and become this thing…

Slowly, I pour myself into the details of this identity. As I become more and more defined, so does the world. The promise of abundant experience, the delight of sensory perception finally win over my reluctance, and I surrender to my desire to manifest. More and more willingly, more and more ecstatically, I enter the heaviness of matter.

The more I fill this particular form, the more it awakens. She smiles and opens herself in a big yawn and full body stretch! She is alive and jumps out of bed vibrantly ready to experience. But before throwing herself into her day, she stills herself for a moment, and expresses an infinity of delight in two human words:  “thank you!”

Alarms have gone off, and its about time I stop hitting the snooze button. Wake up, despite the voices and fatigue.

Clear out the weeds, growing in an unwoken mind. Today I feel confused, dazed, as if I am awake and the sun hasn’t risen. I look closer realising spots, rays of light putrifying a tangled mess. My eyes are heavy, tangled mould seals them shut. I keep at it. I keep at it, i need to clear this forest It blocks out the light!

I need to be reminded that what I am doing, prepares , there is light beyond. Clear away, clear the soil. The growth I have left, uncontrolled, the growth blocks, it brings me nothing. I believe if i climb I can see the light. But why climb if i will fall devoured by shadows. Fear shapes my paranoia, I tell a story. I am not to climb. I am to grow. Grow without stealing, grow in glory through it all , there is a power in this now, a journey, where this too is left behind.

Waking Up

Yesterday was one of the best classes that I have taken both physically and mentally.  If it were not for my yoga practice I know that I would sink even further into depression that I already feel.  The evidence of my healing is present in the sweat that drenches the towel and the mat.  My body feels wonderful and my mind feels alert, and my spirit feels so alive today.  I had a terrible term last term and my boss and I had a great coaching and counceling session.  I allowed myself to receive the feedback that I needed to hear and move forward.  It is a great day!
