We’ve all been in a rut before. And usually, it is not a very fun feeling.
This week’s theme is ruts: avoiding them, coping with them, getting over them. Whether it’s a career rut, creative rut, relationship rut, social rut, exercise rut or an all-encompassing life rut–what’s the best way to deal? What are some inspiring strategies to dig yourself out of your mental inertia and start getting back into a good life momentum that makes you feel productive, happy and excited to find out what happens next?
In some ways, a rut is a blessing in disguise. Once you recognize you are in one and you
want to get out of it, this can be the best opportunity for an exciting new transition. Being stuck in a career rut may inspire you to go back to school and try a completely new career path you’ve always secretly dreamed about. Being stuck in a relationship rut may goad you and your romantic partner to make more exciting travel plans and do new activities together.
Sometimes being stuck means we are pushed to do unfamiliar and new things out of our comfort z
one in order to grow out of our life inertia. Here are some quick, rut-busting tips that just might be the shake-up you need to start feeling inspired again!
- Talk to a friend–on the phone or in person–you haven’t talked to in a while. Sometimes you need a pep talk from a good friend to remind you just how awesome you are.
- Schedule a mini-adventure to do something new. Exploring new places and experiencing new things–even if it’s just a new coffee house in your neighborhood–is a great way to break out of your usual rhythm and possibly inspire some new ideas to get your own life flow going.
- Get rid of the clutter in your living space. A cleaner space will help you think with more clarity what you need to do next.
- Take up an activity that normally scares you or makes you nervous. Doing things out of our comfort zones is one of the best ways to feel like you are on the top of the world!
Are you experiencing a rut right now? Or have you just gotten out of one? What tips and advice do you have for getting out of a rut? What keeps you feeling inspired, productive and rut-free?

This is one of the areas that we (probably) all need reminders about. Getting out of a rut means getting back into our creativity. If I feel lost in a situation and don't know what to do, going for a long walk in the countryside, or just getting out of the office and walking in fresh air can reawaken the spirit. Getting out of a rut into some place more inspired begins with remembering to move!

I like this topic. It is easy to find ourselves in a rut these days. The stress of these times of economic uncertainity and promote stagnate thoughts and behaviors. We must infuse new life in order to receive new life. Make a change and see an change come forth.

I agree – excellent topic! We all experience creative, motivational ruts from time to time. The test and challenge lies in how we overcome them; which tools and strategies we employ. The strongest tool we can use is our mind; our mental acuity can serve to help create solutions for achieving and being all that we want. Here is some insight into mindset and the psychology of achievement for overcoming ruts/obstacles:

Some ruts are deeper than others. I am in the process of popping my head out of a deep old rut and viewing new scenery. There are so many appealing choices so how do I pick one? I've decided to volunteer in my community. One volunteer opportunity may end up being the key to a transition from the corporate world I'm entrenched in. I am being trained to teach reading to adults using phonics. It is a free course if I agree to volunteer some hours each week for six months helping someone to learn to read. It's a win win situation and will help me transition to becoming a Tutor. Even if this turns out to not be my life purpose, just going thru this process has pulled me up out of that rut like nothing else has managed to do. I feel inspired, hopeful and am experiencing much joy as I get to help a fellow human being without any monetary gain, all the while perhaps putting myself on a path to fulfillment. Wow! Who knew volunteering could have that much impact in the world, in a life. I'd always heard it could but until I experienced it for myself I just could not believe it. Nibbling at one volunteer opportunity after another allows us to experience a variety of scenarios without cost or obligation. We help others while we try to find our niches. Volunteering is a Rut Buster!
This is so relevant! I'm so glad this topic is here for us to talk about. I've just begun my blog Help (Not) Wanted to discuss creativity and other aspects of living and music therapy at my website http://www.mechellechestnut.com
I've been working on following my fear in these ways: hip hop dance classes, gymnastics classes, theater improv classes, writing and recording songs, dancing and singing in front of others, wearing makeup! what will be next?
Nice post.
