Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. Perhaps it is my love of food, or sharing it with good people, family, and friends. But I think what gets me about this holiday is it is a time when we all cease our normal schedules to give thanks for everything in our lives. I really can’t think of a better way to spend my day than to feast on all of that yummy food while appreciating all that is well in my life. Good for the soul.
Now we all know, back in the days of the settlers and the natives- this holiday was formed to remind us of the good will and generosity of the natives who helped the settlers grow food and well, settle.
But since then the holiday has sort of evolved into an ‘appreciation day’ of sorts, all about spending time with family, and realizing that all of us don’t have it so bad at all after all.
It is about focusing on what is truly important in our lives (like stuffing!).
How do you celebrate this holiday? What traditions do you have with your family? What meaning do you give Thanksgiving?
If you would like to share, please tag your blog with the word Thanksgiving (just like that), so we can all enjoy reading each others posts, all gathered under one tag for easy access.
Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving! I can’t wait to read your blogs, and looking forward to getting into the holiday spirit with you!

About Dave
Welcome to my Intent profile! I am very excited about this website as it helps to make us all more aware of our personal, social, and global intentions- while also providing a plethora of mind expanding content. Feels more like hanging out at a yoga studio than a large auditorium. A lot of social networks allow you to meet people via your favorite things- but what about our intentions and who we are in the process of becoming? Isn't that worth focusing on?? I think so.
That said, I am a very laid back person who strives to appreciate all the goodness that is around. When I get a wiff of something not so good, I try to focus on the opposite, and immediately move in that direction. Sometimes that is easier said than done, but it is what I strive for.
I love the fresh air and sun. A big nature fan. I get it, and it gets me. Also a big fan of the internet and all of these new ways that we are able to communicate at lightning speeds. Always been a fan of building community and bringing the global community together in venues like this that transcend cultural barriers.
You might see me around these parts pretty often as I help out with community building efforts. Please say hi, and always feel welcome to offer any feedback. I will always make sure it gets to the right people.
Speaking of which, be sure to check out Mallika's awesome idea to really give this site a whirl and set an intention every day for 30 days! http://www.intent.com/mallikachopra/blog/dear-intent-community-join-me-my-30-days-intentions
Our tradition is a little "non-traditional". We do a Thanksgiving camping trip to the desert where we go riding as a family, play games, and actually spend TIME together. Everyone pitches in with the cooking in advance and we eat off of decorative paper plates so NO clean up! It's the best time we have all year as we actually spend the whole 4 day weekend completely together. It's wonderful!
Angie, what a great tradition. Dave, Thanksgiving used to be my favorite holiday too. I still love it, but less so since I don't travel back to the east coast to visit my family, and since my childhood home's been sold (albeit, 9 years ago. I still miss it). I'm enjoying being young and without traditions for the moment, but I'm excited to begin creating new ones with kids in a couple of years.
This is absolutely my favorite holiday. It's all about having TIME to be together, nurturing the Soul (and the stomach) and bringining one year to a close and anticipating another.
Whether we have 2 people for dinner or 10, I am always making enough food for 20….. and then my poor husband has to eat leftovers until Christmas (well, not quite that long!) But that's the fun of it all — being able to provide a bounty for those you love.
My brother-in-law and I used to have a contest every year about who could find (and prepare) the BIGGEST turkey — I think I won every year except one. Then we realized we would be better off with a smaller turkey because they don't take 12 hours to cook and they are usually much more tender. So now we just limit ourselves to "smaller" turkeys (as in under 20 pounds!)
I hope everyone has a blessed Thanksgiving full of love, family, time and good food.
The day after Thanksgiving, my husband and I go to his family's house and have a big breakfast of grits with turkey, stuffing and gravy-all mixed up into a bowl of scrumptious heaven!
