What is the best movie you have seen this year?

Every few years, a movie comes along that moves people in a very dramatic way.  This year, Slumdog Millionaire seems to be a film that will have significant impact.  Even before the tragedy of this past weekend with the terrorist attacks in Mumbai, the movie has created a lot of buzz.  Director Danny Boyle is already to be said to be in the running for an Oscar…

I have received numerous phone calls, texts, emails and facebook reports from friends and acquaintances who say that I MUST see Slumdog Millionaire.  I cant remember another movie where so many people – even those who I am not usually in touch with – have reached out to me about a movie.

My brother says it is the best movie he has ever seen.  He mentioned it in a blog with the preview a few weeks ago, when the worlds attention was not on South Asia as it has been, unfortunately, this weekend.

Today, Fareed Zakaria – in his new show on CNN referred to the film saying it would help give people a sense of life in Mumbai.

My intent this week is to see Slumdog Millionaire.  And, I will surely blog about it afterwards.

Would love to hear your thoughts on this film, or other movies which have truly touched your soul.

My favorite is "Into the Wild". Just INCREDIBLE, touching upon the hypocrisy we experience in our own creation in America, especially capitalism, and one man's rebellion (I have no idea what this is…lol) against it and the "machine". GREAT MOVIE!! I cried and cried and cried as I found complete resonance with "Alexander Supertramp". A must see. This is the only movie I have seen for years beside kids' movies. I tend to have my nose in a book most of the time.

I have to say Slumdog Millionaire was one of my favorite movies this year. The acting, directing, screenplay and cinematography were all excellent. I especially loved the children actors.

It was one of those movies…that..well..move you…it's one of those movies that the audience claps at the end. Even amidst the poverty and violence, the movie leaves you feeling hopeful…which in this day and time, hope is extremely needed.

Oh…and I had never seen a "Bollywood" ending before. I really loved that aspect at the end of the film. Very uplifting. Made me want to dance on my way out.

Fighter is a very engaging and interesting film. I cannot say it is the best film I have seen this year but the most recent one I have seen that I enjoyed and had value.

I saw it just last night on the IFC on demand channel.

Here is a plot summary – Aicha, a high-school student, is a passionate kung fu fighter. Her Turkish parents expect her to get good grades so she can get into medical school, like her brother Ali. But school doesn't inspire her. Defying her family, Aicha starts secretly training at a professional, co-ed kung fu club. A boy, Emil, helps Aicha train for the club championship and they fall in love. But the rules of life are not as simple as the rules of kung fu, and Aicha is forced to decide who she is and what she wants.

And a link to the film – http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0995029/

Enjoy ! All my best, Elaine

    Austrailia.

Singing our stories to each other. a splended exploration of cultures coming together. A riveting reminder of how much we have to learn from aboriginal cultures.

Little out of the line, I want you to see "Pay It Forward". Will surly change the way you take life. In 2008, one of the best movies I've seen.

Slumdog Millionaire was amazing and I think it is even more relevant now after what happened. It captures the spirit of Bombay and its such a unique story.

Also thought the Dark Knight was phenomenal and for all kinds of different reasons, Twilight, which I've seen 3 times in the theater already and its been out just over a week.

Prachi posted a trailer of Slumdog Millionarie and I got very curious about it. I just saw it two weeks ago in the 50th International Film Festival. It is film full of hope and believing in something no matter what. I laughed, cried tons too, and it has the Bollywood touch.

In the same festival I saw a very touching and wonderful movie: Bordering the sky (Auf der anderen Seite) a German film directed by Fatih Akin. Encounters and de-encounters, forgiveness and search, from Germany to Turkey, beautiful a real gift. Also loved

I wholeheartedly agree. Into the Wild was my favourite as well. The aha moment was his failed attempt to cross back over the river to return. It is so much like life…and death, change, the decision that cuts off all other possibility.

  25. Zivininary December 1, 2008 at 9:06 pm #

Beautiful movie!!! I loved it too…I wish the whole movie was about the aboriginal culture/tribes. Did you read the book "Mutant Message Down Under"? This is Marlo Morgan's amazing tale of her journey with Australian Aboriginal tribe! You'd love this book!!!

Why, thank you so much, Malika, for a great source of movies to add to my list on Netflix. I wasn't sure how I was going to find new choices, but from your responses I could add quite a few good ones.

I just saw Steel Toes. It is a story about prejudice and violence and redemption. I was very touched by the characters and their situations. I know I shouldn't ever hope for good results from violent acts, but the sensitivity of people should be heightened by seeking norms rather than extremes and is it?

Just thought you might like to hear the letter that the Hindu man wrote to his attacker:

"I am at present mostly immobilized in hospital. The injury which I have been caused together with my back disallows me to walk or move in a regular fashion. I cannot stand nor can I properly sit. In general, I have the appearance of a man mauled by an animal.

Lastly, I have difficulty seeing from one eye and can only hope for better. I am still in hospital in case of more complications from the attack. My wife and 2 children live now in some fear for their lives. They are not at present secure. It is my greatest hope to regain wellness that I may be of some utility to my family and all the rest of society. I give thanks to all those who have helped me so much and pray for them that they may be rewarded for their efforts. As for the young man who so brutally attacked me with no provocation whatever on my part, I feel this young man must be kept from society until the time when he has a full rehabilitation and is again able to live in a society with many colors.

In his Christian Bible, it is Joseph who had a cloak of many colors and that is what we find in society. He may one day wish to pick up that cloak for himself. Finally, I wish to say to him that I bear him no grudge in any way, though I am not a martyr, and take no pleasure in this incapacitation, which is not of my doing.

If I am destined to die, leaving behind this world, as a Hindu, it is my great honor to offer him my forgiveness in a world where forgiveness seldom exists. I wish him only goodness, comfort, and shade in this most difficult walk which he has embarked on, through the many harsh days and nights which can at times be life. As well, I hope that he finds a better road to walk. In heaven and heaven alone can each be judged according to his merits or demerits."

As hard as the lesson in this movie is for us to learn, I pray and pray that young people will not acquire the ways of violence due to faults in our society. It is a most difficult path. I, too, want to offer those who feel forced down this path of violence "a better road to walk." If only a new theory of evolution would prove inviting and challenging to their keener senses.

The Dark Knight. It doesn't merely adapt, but transcends the source material to a whole new level. Its Unfortunate it didn't get more nominations at the Golden Globes

It's a difficult choice but I would go for "It's complicated", it's a sort of smart comedy, this kind of movies will always have an effect on me. Also I was surprised in a good way by the <a rel="follow" href="http://www.auroracoast.com/">Video Production Connecticut with few good productions.
