What Brings about Enlightenment?

What brings about enlightenment? Will the study of books and practice of meditation lead to enlightenment? Will a master bring you to enlightenment? Is there a method at all, or even a king’s highway to speed up the process? And what is enlightenment anyway?

What do people say that have undergone an awakening experience? What happened to them? Who are they? Can anyone share their experience?
