Grin, well he hasnt evoked much peace yet? bit premature maybe, now if he ceased to invest in some of the wars? maybe but at present, nah!
I think it is amazing. It is wonderful that the International Community can acknowledge the efforts of an American President who has been given some extroadinary challenges and problems to face in his own country–yet, still take on the want and hope and need to help in creating world peace. It is truly inspiring.
I think it is incredible – in the best way. They have acknowledged the new climate of politics that he has brought so dramatically to the world, and his ability to inspire people around the globe. In effect, they are saying "yes we can – and we believe in you too". Bravo for President Obama, and I will continue to do my part to carry Hope and Courage and Dreams and more to everyone I touch too. Because when we all participate, we all win.
YEP! Just look at his way of dealing with accepting the prize alone such peace and humility in his statement! And I loved the way he dealt with the Summit of the Americas in Trinidad early this year…his response to Pres Noreiga and his dealings with good ole Hugo! Truly what the prize symbolises…you can give a prize easily to someone for what they represent and not what they have acheived…and as he rightly said he sees it as a call to action…so yep the prize can also be given as an impetus and strategic move or cue towards peace…good one Nobel Committee!
It is a good pat on the back for him , but I think alot of communites would have been more impressed if he had come out and said to give the olympics to our brothers and sisters in south america and not supported our own bid. I know alot of people here, some Obama will never do right in their eyes, would have gone nuts if he had but he would have taken the , I think, moral road which would have skyrocketed his international standing. Even though he has been filled with good ideas and intentions, his ecomomic stance toward these intentions are being thrown off balance and making it more difficult for him, and putting things like the nobel award into question with others around the world.
I can't say I'm a huge fan of a decision that feels too premature for my preference. Regardless of the public consensus, I hope it will inspire both naysayers and supporters to do more in their own ways to bring peace to this world.
Well, I think it is all relative. Compared to our last president, I am sure it seems impressive that Obama hasn't invaded any new countries. Maybe they just want to reward his good behavior before he gets anxious and starts treating his presidency like a game of Risk.
It's an interesting decision that perhaps was made to create a dialogue? I think that Obama does represent hope and just being President sets a new paradigm in and of itself. And perhaps a preemptive Nobel Peace Prize makes hard decisions that US President needs to make – like going to war – all that much harder as there is the notion that you stand for peace. I am a huge fan of Obama, but am still processing my thoughts on this.
Following Obama
Hi Mallika,
I think President Barak Obama didn't so much "win" the award as it was "given" to him which doesn't speak well of the Officials who award this prize. It kind of feels like the Olympic committee which sometimes awards the gold to someone, sometimes that may not have actually had the "gold" performance but the "politics" of the situation has determined the end result.
He can't very well give it back so he might as well accept it graciously and continue on.
I feel AMAZED, OPENED, EXPANDED…
I feel worried, concerned, hopeful…
I pray for Barack's strength,
as a man,
that he can allow all the comes to him
– to flow through him–
for the common good,
without his attachment.
I feel blessed.
(Thank you for asking Malika.)
This is a good question. I think it is wonderful. Peace is a necessary thing.
An honor bestowed to set the stage for more positive interaction and results with those other countries with caustic "feelings" toward U.S. foreign policy.
No!
Considering how our last President was viewed by us and the world…I would say we are heading in the right direction. I, myself, was proud to vote for President Obama and feel he truly has the United States citizens and the world in his best interests, UNLIKE the previous President.
I also think that it isn't Obama singularly that won the prize, it honors ALL of us who are investing our energy, hope and direction toward "being the change we want to see in the world!"
I am happy about it. I think what he has done over the past year in terms of waking people up to the real possibilities of peace around the world should not be overlooked. I know people are upset and think the prize is premature. Perhaps so. But I think his committed actions thus to peace and the dialogue he has created thus far will have long term effect that we have not seen yet. Surprising announcement — yes. Wrong decision – no.
Mallika, I think one should search peace within instead being egoic and receiving something outside oneself…as a person who will continue touching the "Wheel" will only contribute birth death and rebirth and never be Enlightened….but this is only my opinion as it is an observation and not a judgement for whatever the man does with it is his own subjective reality even though it was produced objectively

As I scrolled down the comments I was thinking of writing saying that it perhaps is a prospective prize as opposed to a retrospective prize, then I saw Mallika's post, I think she has hit the nail on its head ! It's a pre-emptive prize of peace. What a way to deal with the situation when few years back when preemptive attacks were the order of the day! I guess as opposed to preemptive attacks I would choose pre-emptive peace prizes on any day (and like a 'friend' of mine sometimes say) twice on Sundays !!! Congratualtions Obama!
As for those who think it's political and compares it to an Olympic gold given without much performance. On one hand yes peace is political and its more than running around a green patch of grass. And performance ?? there are plenty of people with lot of actions in the name of so many causes… while they go on about with much noise they only aggravate the problems that they claim to stand for… The prize is for what he stands for… the larger than life persona and yeah the paradigm he represents… his presence itself is a hope… hope that ignite people not just among his fellow country men but across the globe… Well those who don't see will never see …. they will keep walking round and round in circles blaming and framing and doing what they are good at doing…. probably the reasons themselves for the crises we are in today !
Only concern is that his efforts may not be sabotaged and the great expectations and faith the masses have of him… itself is quite a load on one persons shoulders. But may his legend remains and he find the strength to complete his job!
I sincerely hope that his being awarded this honor will help focus American attention on the global community. I hope this award helps people in the U.S. look at themselves through the eyes of the rest of the world so that they may realize we're all in this together and that the actions of the U.S. have global consequences. Unfortunately, I believe this is going to be used as fodder for the increasingly negative and hate-filled anti-Obama rhetoric being constantly circulated in the media. I hope his humility and graciousness in accepting this honor will inspire people and quiet his very vocal detractors. And I hope the intent of the Nobel committee in giving this award – to support Obama's peace efforts around the world so far – will come to fruition.
Disgusting!!! He is in the midst of two wars, one which he says is a necessity – and has yet to pull any troops out of Iraq, and they give him a peace prize!! This is an insult and a slap in the face to those people who have worked and sacrificed their whole lives, to try create a better more peacfull world! All Obama has done is talk about Nuclear disarmement and his idea of peace, thats all! And as we all know talk is cheap!
STUNNING!
I think Barak Obama is the best thing that has happened to the USA in a long while and deserves the Peace Prize. He is not appreciated enough by the American people who seem to think that Barak Obama is a god who can wave a magic wand to correct all the mess created by Bush and company .
Barak Obama deserves recognition , He deserves to be acknowledged for damage control. There are still things going on , remnants of the Bush regime that cannot be stopped, Obama as he has said , cannot do the work of PEACE alone and needs the support of the American people. Barak OBama has taken over a huge mess left by Bush and company.
Bless Barak Obama as he works for peace. Bless Barak Obama with all the support that he needs to ensure that peace prevails. May the Nobel Peace Prize serve to motivate Barak Obama all the more to cultivate Peace.
btw …..I hope the next Nobel Peace Prize goes to Deepak Chopra fpr his amazing contribution to raising consciousness. worldwide .
Love and Namast
This can be the first step for him to become a better human being!! We should keep the hope in the future!!
Absurd & ridiculous! How can you receive this award for achieving NOTHING short of more chaos in our beloved USA
Not happy and totally shocked,
Strong contender for the next Nobel for peace is Mr. xyz from Pakistan for TALKING about the piece.. oh
The peace prize has been given away, like it or not. This is always with awards and recognition. Can they really judge better? An award how so ever big or small it may be, is a human being's invention to acknowledge another human being and the selection process is a selected group's effort by and large. There are many people who are not even noticed because they are not under spot light. But that certainly does not make them any less competent.
I do not see a reason why this subject has been debated so much. Surprise as it was, even for the president, but also an opportunity to celebrate it. As he clearly, graciously and responsibly justifies the award as "call for action". Once in a while a leader like him shows up. Award or no award, the revolutionary spirit in such people brings about phenomenal changes. Congratulations to Obama!
I'm astonished so early in his Presidency…a lot of pressure to live up to the promise…but I believe he will ultimately fulfill the intent of this honor and inspire others to act with the best of intentions culminating in the best of results.
I agree with Yumi.
Namaste,
Pam
Congratulation Mr. President – I am overjoyed that you won the Nobel Peace Prize. You are a decent man and I love you!
It was brilliant and a wonderful choice. His win is a win for the whole world because it is a win for PEACE a win for all that is good in the world. He has brought hope to the world as he is loved throughout the world. It is a vote against the tyranny of the Bush/Cheney years of agony.
Bishop Tutu who is in our book won for aparthied and yet it took 10 years to accomplish. The Nobel Peace Prize will give him a chance to use this universal prize to be a great ambassador of all good causes.
May all people be happy,
Ed
It actually makes sense to me.
Two years ago, many of us actually fretted privately about the potential of some deliberate act of violence serving as a pretext to postponing an election. Such a fear isn't out of the question: In Germany, the burning of the Reichstag was a mysterious event used to justify mass purges, the complete ban of the communist party in Germany, and Hitler's unchecked rise to total power. George Busn's and Dick Cneney's contempt for the constitution was obvious, so such chicanery seemed possible.
But the election occurred much to everyone's relief.
That such a man could cross heady currents to become president of our country, that he could even step up to lead in the face of derision and even threat, is itself a twenty-first century miracle. The Nobel committee's mandate was clear: the man was the very embodiment of everything it takes to give birth to peace. It was less about what Barack Obama had ever done than what he represented: the collective will of a People who had answered the call of Freedom with conviction, unbridled, ever hopeful.
OBAMA WINS NOBEL PEACE PRIZE! What a Surprise! Congratulations! I am feeling really hopeful for the World! I hope President Obama holds the Torch high to champion for Peace! Bring it On! This Accolade will raise the bar. Obama will be compelled to rise to the role. Hopefully now He will feel obligated to expedite our retreat from the War.
Ushering the Next Stage in Our Evolution towards Global Peace, this is a Call For Action from Our International Neighbors, on Obama's behalf – A call to lead the way towards resolution & Peace, now the bar has been raised for our expectations & for President Obama's trajectory. I think it is amazing that the International community would bless our nation's leader with this accolade considering how America has been perceived over the prior several years from the Global perspective. This generous symbolic gesture beckons that we have been invited back into the global fold, and may this provide the momentum to facilitate Obama's challenge to be the bridge-maker in healing the divide of the wars and unrest that has polarized our world views. May we all wake up and realize; We all value the same things, Let's each individually and collective find our Peace! We Are One!
Danes such a beautiful comment!
Yep to me it is what he represents too…as you said…an embodiment of peace!
You know when the lady announced it in Norway I could hear/feel the joy and excitment in her voice!
I think it is a disgrace to the award when it is given to someone like Barack Obama before he's accomplished anything peaceful (especially when we currently have a war going); while others like Mahatma Ghandi, Maya Angelou, Oprah Winfrey, John Lennon, Paul McCartney (even MIchael Jackson), etc. are over-looked time and again. It's equal to awarding someone and Oscar for 'best film of the year' before it's even been filmed, much less edited and viewed by audiences.
spot on Mara
couldn't disagree with you more. I believe you missed the point. It is well known that Bishop Tutu won for apartheid and it took 10 years for it to take off.
His win was form all humanity
He brought a broken world that hated America under Bush/Cheney together. The people f the world see him as a beacon of hope.
May all people be happy,
Ed
Dr. Rev. Heather I agree totally with you.
Lets remember Bishop Tutu had put work and effort in for years fighting forequal rights, before getting the Peace Prize – Obama had only been in office for 11 days when the nominations for the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize ended. It looks like Politics, Power and Popularity has won here, not Peace.
I think it is right that he should get the prize for the sheer fact that his essence is one of peace. Take away all the veils and see what he is… what he stands for.. does he care…Yes he does and he also wants to share his ideals of a peaceful successful planet not only for the USA but for all the world. His understanding of all the different peoples of the world was recognized. I think this is good. Everyone looks to him to cure all the US and the world's ills however we all seem to forget that we (members of the human race) causes the collective ills. So what are we doing as members of the collective human race living on Planet earth doing to achieve our individual Noble Peace Prizes.
I am thrilled that he has received the Nobel Peace Prize. I pray for him and his family all of the time. He is as brave a man as is out there and his job, cleaning up after a Fear-based Bush regime, is astronomically complicated. I do not pretend to know anything at all about politics and feel as disappointed as most feel that we have not completely stopped waging war but as someone here said, he is not the one who put these situations in motion. I believe that he is doing what he can to do the right thing given the circumstances. I wouldn't wish his job on anyone and yet I am grateful that he has found the courage to follow his path.
What I have come to love most about our current President is that he does not claim to be the patriarchal figure so many in America normally look for and cling to to fix what is broke in their lives and in the nation. Rather, he has asked us to and continues to remind us that we must join him in changing our circumstances; and then he has gone forth to change the world by waging another war which will ripple out far into the future . . . a war of peace to exist alongside of the war of death and destruction which had already been going on in the hearts of men and reflected in the world. The world out there, after all, is merely a reflection of what is already within us individually and collectively and so we are truly the ones responsible for and capable of ending war. Until each of us acknowledges our role and our power in changing the violence, war, fear and destruction in ourselves, our lives, our families, our neighborhoods, our communitites, our society and in our world, the war within us will continue to be reflected out there.
Those of you here, most if not all, have yourselves put your best foot forward to chase the higher path. Let those of us who yearn for inner and outer peace support the efforts of Barak Obama and send him love, light and energy so that his highest self will continue to be the one making the decisions. That is our role and power.
I agree as well, that there are so many leaders who are here on the planet right now who deserve recognition for their efforts to bring peace. I also believe that Spirit moves us all. For the true peacemakers, recognition is not the point .
Sitting in an anti semitic church for twenty years listening to hate speech, is not very peaceful or unifiying.
If they gave it to him, it more reflects those who decided he was worthy than he himself. They probably want to express the hope for change they have in him, their acknowledgement of his historical significance and his courage to play that role as well as he has thus far, and perhaps a way to manipulate him into living up to all the promises he has made!!!
