What is Success?

At a fairly young age, I had thoughts of being successful when I grew up. I worked hard and took out student loans to get through school. Receiving my Bachelors and then my Masters degree could be considered my first "big" success. I entered the corporate world and began to set goals as measures of success for myself. As a climbed the corporate ladder I kept telling myself that I was becoming more successful. It wasn’t long before I achieved the ultimate corporate goal I had set out for: to be the head of Human Resources at a company. I was in a momentary pause. I had accomplished everything I set out to do; every goal was met and yet something bothered me. For some reason I didn’t feel successful. I began to wonder what success really is.

“What is Success?”

NOTE: Words are often perceived in many ways, resulting in miscommunication. In order to ensure proper communication, I have provided the definition of many key words (indicated by a * ‘star’) in the end. These definitions will help to clarify the meaning and context in which I have been used these words to define SUCCESS.

According to me:-
Success is to achieve complete harmony and integration in all dimensions of personal existence (i.e. Work, Behavior, Thought and Realization/Existential-experience*) and all levels of living (i.e. Individual, Family*, Society & Nature). The achievement of the over all harmony is success. So success means following achievements-

All Dimensions of Personal existence
1- Work/Occupation: prosperity* and health
2- Behaviour: Justice*/Mutual satisfaction/Mutual fulfillment
3- Thought: Resolution*/ all encompassing solution
4- Realization/Existential-experience*: Continuity of happiness*, peace, contentment and Eternal Bliss

All Levels of Living
1- In Every individual: Omni-dimensional resolution*
2- In Every Family*: Prosperity*
3- In Society: Fearlessness*/Trust*
4- In Nature: Co-existence
Note: Here society includes community, village, town, province, country and world

In other word success means achievement of following-
-A happy, healthy and self-fulfilling personal life
-Joyous, mutually fulfilling and satisfying relationships and prosperity in families, where all families can have a secure and meaningful means of livelihood.
-Justice, equality and fearlessness (trust) in society
-Harmonious co-existence with nature in which ecological harmony is maintained in all its richness and diversity

Definition of Some words which I used above-

* Realization/Existential experience: [1] Point of fulfillment of knowing and believing in existence [2] Awakening and its continuity forever?[3] Knowing every entity in existence as it is – in its entirety
* Family- A group of limited number of individuals in which everyone lives with humane-conduct by recognizing and fulfilling values and relationship and are complimentary for prosperity and resolution
* Prosperity: [1] Absence of feelings of not-having the required resources for living. [2] Absence of absence (feeling of lack/deprivation) [3] Feeling of having more than one’s family requirements or a resolved family’s producing more than its material needs
* Justice: [1] Satisfaction point of behavior and its continuity [2] Relationship-values-valuation-mutual fulfillment and their continuity [3] Humane-behavior in mutuality
* Resolution: [1] Activities of Knowing, Believing, Recognizing, and Doing [2] Having answers to every Why and How [3] Elimination of problems by working with a method which has wisdom in agreement with Science, and Science in agreement with wisdom [4] Complete/Perfect comprehension of existence [5] Understanding completeness and its proof [6] Freedom from illusion
* Happiness: [1] Resolution itself is Happiness [2] Free from problems [3] Commitment and compatibility/agreement for justice [4] To be in a state/situation of harmony, synergy, order or liking
* Fearlessness: [1] Mutual trust and complementariness?[2] Activities for nourishing the realization of resolution and prosperity?[3] Trust in active-presence of existence
* Trust: [1] Fulfillment of values inherent in mutuality (relationship) [2] Understanding of order in existence and the expression and communication of resolution [3] To be assured within oneself

What is Success?

What is your definition of success? What does the word mean to you? The word comes from the Latin "succedere" meaning ‘to come after.’  Thus success comes after something but what is it? The famous salesman, Tom Hopkins defines it as follows:  "Success is the lifelong journey toward predetermined worthwhile goals".

I like that definition because you can have small successes along the journey as you navigate the roles and worlds of your life but it also reminds you to keep the big picture in sight  or as the American Indian would say, "Keep your eye on the track and the trail".  Too often it is easy to look at the present situation and small successes and forget our long term goals. In the Tao of Balance I will talk about those a bit more in depth. But until then I ask, what is success to you?

Success is a continual quest for achieving excellence in all facets of Life

The extent of excellence achieved might vary, however it is the sincerity and most importantly vision of the intentions that matters

Success is Wisdom, since Wisdom / Thoughtful Decisions define success, a pro active / disciplined approach

Summarizing the above in one paragraph

"Success is seeking to earnestly identify wise intellectual meaningful endeavors and pursuing each aspect with an Intelligent, Wise, Aware, Diligent, Prudent and Responsible approach constructively"

    Best Wishes,

    Vashi Ram Chandi

Success is being happy. If you are doing what you love in any category then you find success everyday. When I can be happy and feel a state of joy everyday, then I will consider myself successful..

I had to think about this for a long time :) … thank you for initiating a thoughtful discussion.

My definition of success is the outcome of a relentless and never-ending journey of learning, immersing, evolving and aligning with truth.

Success comes to those people who are commited and courageous to never giving up on living fully and truthfully.

    Thank you for the question.

When I read it, the first thought that came to me was, "when I can look in the mirror and smile after completion of a project, at the end of the day, even in the middle of working on something or just because the smile is what I am feeling in the moment…that is success."

Success is showing up, learning, loving, living and laughing at everything and everyone, including most often ourselves, until we depart on the next higher and more virtuous leg of our journeys.

A friend of mine says, "if it ain't funny, it ain't spirit" and I would concur that love and light and lightness all go hand in hand.

Very true. Success is the lifelong journey towards predetermined goals that change from time to time or at least after they are realized. It is extremely important to remind ourselves of the fact that small success here and there while following the trail is not the "destination" . I wonder though if there can be anything called a destination, because a success also leads to newer and newer goals.
