Today is a day I leave the beautiful island of Maui and head back to the Boston area. It is always hard to leave such a beautiful place. I am very grateful for the time that I spend in Maui. It is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen.
Travel is a blessing as when we travel we see places with fresh eyes. When we are home we do not always notice the beauty. When we visit a place away from home our eyes are open and ready to take in everything around us.
Boston is the most beautiful when I first arrive home . That is becasue “my travelers eyes” are still seeing all that is beautiful. I see the beauty in Boston that the visitor sees: especially the Charles River. After awhile I take Boston for granted. It is not good to take places for granted.
WHAT ABOUT RELATIONSHIPS?
Perhaps we do the same thing with relationships. After we have known someone for a long time, we may not see them with the same eyes we use when we meet someone new. New people can seem more exciting. But they are not.
There is a lesson that travel has to teach us about our relationships: do not take a place OR a relationship for granted. Always see the world and people with eyes that are looking for beauty.

Carole,
You have so beautifully managed to capture in words my own feelings about the blessings of travel.
It is indeed, the ability to experience life at home with a travelers eye that inspired fellow travel journalist, Judith Fein, and I to launch the new website, http://YourLifeIsATrip.com, featuring stories about where life and travel meet.
We'd love to have you join the fun.
Warmest regards,

i have lived in hawai'i all my life, and yet everyday, i still marvel at the incredible beauty of this land that i love so much.
thank you for reminding me that all my relationships, not just my one with the land, do in fact fill me with an awesome sense of wonder and gratitude. it is good to be reminded and take notice. mahalo.
I enjoy this reminder very much. I was reminded of this when I was living abroad for a year and came back to Los Angeles. Home truly is a wonderful place to travel as well.
