What

One of my best friends moved to Boston and called to tell me how she was adapting from West Coast to East Coast. She said, “Here my girlfriends will ask me how often I have sex with my husband, but they are mortified when I talk about money.”

It reminds me of our relationships with the bank. Sometimes I get the feeling we are all a little bit Boston, even while millions are swirling the drain of personal finance as they once knew it. If we are all in the same swirl, wouldn’t we want to talk about it? Hear each other’s tribulations and solutions? Wouldn’t we want to relate our issues to our friends, to the loan officer and the bank, because they could have the solutions?

Financial Matters Out in the Open

Money is a secretive matter. It gets tied up in status and shame, and when we are faced with losing it, the prospect of loss is often bigger than the sum itself. It is emotional and heavy.

What if potential loss were an easier burden to share? What if talking about money challenges and fears could open up solutions? If you say out loud what your situation is, someone very often will know someone else who can help, or who went through exactly what you are going through, or knows someone who works at Chase, or whose cousin is a financial advisor who can help.

Talking about money challenges means letting go, and maybe even coming to some conclusions that are hard to swallow. In the interest of letting go, I am trying that on. I have been filing loan modification papers for a year now, and have reached the point where I can take no more steps forward. What if the only answer now is to surrender?

What if I was willing to take the massive action of letting this property go? And if I am willing, why am I not including the bank and loan officer in on my process? Why am I acting differently in this relationship? Any other relationship, I would speak to what I’m struggling with, and what I am willing to do.

Conversations About Letting Go

Wouldn’t it be great if I actually had that conversation with the bank? I would love to keep this property and pay you on a regular basis. But I can’t do it if I don’t get the loan modification. I have tried everything from changing my family’s lifestyle to filing twelve months’ worth of papers. And now, I am willing to let it go.

My actions at the beginning of the day included faxing my bank six utility bills and thirty pages of statements. What I am going to do now do is write a letter to thank the loan officer. Then write to the bank to say I’m willing to let go. What I am hoping is that by surrendering and being public about it, I will be building my team, my support network, to help me continue to make the changes I want to make in my family’s life.

What

What’s Mine to Do?

One of the biggest lessons I ever learned in life was the difference between what I can do and what’s mine to do. Huge difference there, really.

First, you should know that the truth about each human being is that all of us can do anything we really want to do. I can hear the protests already.

Wait, I can’t decide to be a prima ballerina at 65!

Wait, I can’t go to law school after I retire!

Wait, I can’t give up my job and pursue my passion!

Okay, okay, okay.

Listen to me carefully, dear one, you can. You can do all those things if you really want to do them. The thing is: do you want that? Really want it. Absolutely, surely, clearly, definitely want exactly that?

So, to the drooling ballerinas and ballerinos in our midst … can you decide to be a leading classical dancer at 65? Sure, but you probably won’t lead the American Ballet Theatre. So what? Do you want it? Good. Do it.

The thing is … I know each of us has a clear and personal purpose for being here on the planet. I think it would be fun to be a lead dancer, but that’s not mine to do, even though I could do it if I wanted to do it.

Nope, that’s definitely not mine to do.

Apply this in a closer way …

This week I received an invitation to be a once a month contributor to a new website reminding all women that we are beautiful. My initial reaction was yes, I’ll do it. I asked my dear assistant to read the offer and tell me what she got. Then I wrote to the website’s founder and asked to communicate with her.

Since then, I received an email from someone who is not the founder, and a group email at that. No response from the founder per se. Hmmm.

Now I’m wondering about agreeing to do this. The question I ask myself is: Is this mine to do?

If it is, that will become clear. If it isn’t, and I suspect it’s not, that will become clear. Now, why might this participation not be mine to do?

Well, several things come to mind …

First, I’ve just signed with a literary agent and I’m relatively sure that I’ll be facing a book contract very soon. That will mean working with an editor to make revisions in my novels, and that can be quite time-consuming.

Second, I’ve been doing a lot of uncompensated writing, and as a result my work is all over the Web. Do I need to do more of it? I’m not sure.

Third, it has been 8 months since I’ve been able to pick up the plot of the seventh Mex book, Wicked Joy. Last weekend I started writing on it again which is a delight to me, but I realized there had been no space for my novel writing, and too much writing for blogs.

Hmmm. What to do?

This morning I’m going to send both the invite email and the group email to two intuitive friends I know who believe in my work. I’m going to ask them to tell me what they think.

The question I’ll ask: Is this mine to do?

You see, I still have some trouble with discerning what’s mine and what’s not. It’s a relief to have trustworthy friends who will tell me the truth.

What

Preg_belly submitted by Nicole Shariat
Most pregnant women know that what you put in your body is important to the health and well-being of your growing baby. But do you know that what you put on your body is of equal importance?

When you are picking your products for your daily beauty routine, it is important to remember that the chemicals in your hair products pass through your scalp and are absorbed into your body. In fact, your scalp is one of the most porous areas of your body! With a developing baby, this is a vital concern.

Expecting and new moms must remember that everything you eat, apply or make contact with can affect not only you but your growing baby. "Because some topical ingredients get absorbed into the bloodstream, there are some you want to avoid," notes Leslie Baumann, professor at the University of Miami and author of The Skin Type Solution (Bantam, 2006).

While there are safe options out there, there are two chemical classes that are considered potentially harmful to your baby’s health and development. We’ve put together a great label lookout guide that gives you the up-to-date knowledge on the chemical ingredients that can put baby at risk. We also know that sometimes labels are a pain to translate. For some great mom-tested products, check out Mom Hair Care Faves. Here, you will find a selection of amazing products including super moisturizing pregnancy shampoo made just for you!

Note: For mom’s who plan to breastfeed, continue following the guidelines below until you stop nursing.

Label Look Out
Two chemical classes you want to watch out for: phthalates (sometimes labeled "fragrance") and sulfates.

Phthalates
One of the most commonly used chemical families in cosmetics. Phthalates are plasticizers that serve many purposes in hair care products – they increase absorption and act as preservatives.

But, phthalates are one of the hair (and skin) care ingredients that the experts tell expectant moms to stay away from. Findings from recent medical studies suggest that phthalates can potentially impact hormones and lead to birth defects. Possible changes to birth outcomes include: birth weight, length of term, fertility (lower sperm production), and anatomical abnormalities.

If you have been using hair products that have phthalates, don’t panic. The evidence is still inconclusive. But take steps to heed the medical advice and try to find a new hair care line that is phthalate free.

Phthalates on the Label
Dibutyl phthalate (DBP), Benzylbutyl phthalate (BzBP), Di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) and Di-isononyl phthalate (DINP)
**Phthalates do not have to be listed on the label and can sometimes be “hidden” under fragrance. Look for hair care that is labeled phthalate free.

Sulfates (SLS)
A very common chemical in many shampoos, shampoos, detergents, toothpastes and other soapy products (even our car washes!). Sulfates, chemically known as surfactants, are used in each of these products because they are highly effective foaming agents.

However, recently, there has been a huge shift away from sulfates. The shift is occurring for both beauty and health purposes.

For beauty, sulfates “detergent like” qualities actually work a little too well. They are in our products to remove oil – but in this removal process they can over strip hair of moisture created by our natural hair oils. Many women are moving towards “sulfate free” or “no-poo” shampoos because they like the extra moisture that sulfate free shampoos provide.

For health, SLS is absorbed into the bloodstream through the scalp. Once absorbed, one of the main effects of sulfates is to mimic the activity of the hormone Oestrogen. This has many health implications for women including: dropping male fertility (if used during pregnancy or breastfeeding) to increasing female cancers such as breast cancer (where oestrogen levels are known to be involved).

Sulfates on the Label
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) and Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)

Mom Hair Care Faves
Frederic Fekkai Au Naturel Gentle Shampoo A great paraben and sulfate free gentle cleanser.
Intelligent Nutrients An excellent organic cleanser that is so pure you can almost eat it!
NINE Naturals Specially made for expecting and new moms. A great hair wash that leaves your improves moisture and shine.

Andrea, this is a FABULOUS piece! Right on!!

Expectant mothers have no idea of the toxic substances waiting to leap into their blood streams from products: cosmetic, household cleaning, food, etc. Sadly, too many of us are quick to trust that companies producing these items have our best interests in mind. They don't and why should they — corporations were created and are administered for BUSINESS purposes. Nor can we count on our government to protect us. When you examine the number of FDA executives who leave government service for work in the same companies over which they exercised "public safety" enforcement, and you can easily figure out what goes on there.

Whenever I'm consulting with Moms-2-B, I tell them the following: You are responsible for YOU and for BABY with regard to whatever you permit to touch your body, and Baby CANNOT READ THE LABELS. Regarding cosmetics and hygiene products, Mothers need to make sure nothing but ORGANIC (or at least all-truly-natural) comes in contact with their bodies. EXCUSES BEGONE, as Sir Wayne Dyer would say.

The "label" issue is something I come in contact with in my work to assist others (expectant mothers included) with their health challenges using essential oils. Unfortunately, so many consumers are using substandard, inferior, recreational or fragrance-only oils for their HEALING purposes and getting inconsistent results, if any. Others are getting negative reactions from such oils, once the CHEMICAL constituents and synthetics so often included in low-grade essential oils come into contact with living tissue. Others are even BURNING these potentially dangerous oils in their homes, causing them and other occupants to breath in God knows what! That is why I tell people to use ONLY "therapeutic-grade" essential oils. If that term is not on the label, you truly have no real idea what is in the bottle.

Andrea, together, we can educate more and more people to take a stand against impurities in consumable products. Once profits go down for the producers, they'll be forced to go the other direction. That's already happening, but progress is slow because too many people are still lining up to victimize themselves by consuming these products.

Holi Joe, this is what happens when public service is not segregated from private interests. This is why Plato in the Republic had his philosopher-kings owning nothing of their own from birth. I am not that radical, but certainly there should some sort of firewall, otherwise some form of Corpratism is inevitable, as we have now.

@ Joe :: Thanks for the comments. You know, in writing my blog and just looking it around and the recent recalls from China, part of me misses the old days when we made our own stuff in the back yard. As it stands, many people (but not enough because of cost and ignorance) are beginning to make the turn, either by doing their own due diligence or researching ingredients or by simply using base oils or simple ingredients.

Pregnancy is close to my heart, especially as hubby and I have decided to add on to the existing family this winter and I'm already changing my exercise routine, eating habits, et al. So I see it as self-propelled mission, as I don't wish to stop capitalism and definitely don't need big government being involved AT ALL. I'll keep my eyes open to how this progresses.

What

Love has everything to do with every cell of life.  The ripple effect of being hit by a car is interesting. This was not just about me.  This event defines those around me in our life’s journey.

The cards and letters from friends have been overflowing with love.  People have offered to take precious vacation time to stay with me and to take time out of their busy lives to care for me in my incapacitated state. Offers to cook, help me walk, take care of my menagerie of animals, people asking to help in every way.

I am humbled and grateful to the depths of my soul for the love bubbling up from these saints called friends.  I literally feel your prayers and surrender into your love and kindness.

This time of immobility teaches me about others with permanent disabilities and how much I love them because now I really understand how important INTERDEPENDENCE is NOT INDEPENDENCE!

What

Have you ever tried tearing your son’s attention away when he’s deep into Diego? Ever attempted to converse with your daughter when she’s transfixed by Tinker Bell? Nickelodeon and Disney know they’ve got a captive audience in today’s tots and tweens. And while we might wish our wee ones spent a little more time out in the green and a little less time sucked into the screen, we are pleased to report that kids’ TV’s two top dogs are doing their part to spread the message of environmental stewardship and resource conservation. And if our rugrats’ recent reminders to shut off lights when we’re not in the room are any indication, they are listening up!

image

What’s big and green and airs over and over? Why that would be Nickelodeon’s The Big Green Help—the kids’ cable network’s eco campaign, which runs between-show spots and maintains a major Web presence full of games, quizzes and other interactive fun. Nick launched The Big Green Help—a green offshoot of its much-lauded The Big Help public-service campaign—in April 2008, after partnering on a research study with the Pew Center on Global Climate Change. Results of that study revealed that 50% of kids ages 8-14 are not sure how to directly impact environmental issues, but approximately 80% believe they can stop global warming. The study also found 62% of families responding that they regularly drank bottled water, though 45% admitted they did not recycle plastic bottles. Yikes! To rectify issues like these, the Big Green Help tackles topics including energy conservation, recycling and curbing CO2 emissions. Our preschoolers are partial to The Big Green Help animation spots that offer instruction on turning off computers, stereos and lights when leaving a room, and feature an international assemblage of kids encircling a smiling globe with the message, “Let’s care for the Earth, the friend we adore.” Amen to that.

Plus, we appreciate The Big Green Guide’s online parenting resources, with handy suggestions for teaching our tots about nature, recycling and energy conservation. Our CPU-savvy slightly older ones dig The Big Green Help’s Web site, where Nick celebs like SpongeBob and the Naked Brothers Band star in interactive games like Dirty Bubble Busters and the all-too-addictive Polar Bear Bounce. Kids can also pledge to reduce their carbon footprint by turning off lights and powering down the computer when not in use (208 pounds of CO2/year), reminding parents to turn off the car when waiting to pick ’em up from school (657 pounds/year), and recycling the family paper, plastic, aluminum and glass each week (a whopping 1,803 pounds/year). Yowza! Whatever we think about disaster-prone sea sponges, paranoid ferrets, superhero house pets or pint-size explorers, we’re down with Nick’s use of its hold on our young impressionables to promote the greater green good.

Who knew a teeny, tiny pixie could wield so much eco-influence on mini minds? The Department of Energy, that’s who. That’s why the DOE, along with the Advertising Council, hooked up with Disney on the What’s Your Excuse? campaign. Campaign PSAs featuring Tinker Bell (the new and so-called improved version, not the exceedingly vain, non-speaking, jealous wee spitfire of old) and her pixie pals originally aired on TV last year and can now be found at www.energy.gov . Our young Tink fans squeal with delight at the sight of the playful pixies setting Pixie Hollow aglow with energy-saving lights, and plugging into an assembly-line-style power strip. And once we’re on the site, we can surf a whole spectrum of energy-related tips, facts and games together. We like the simple drawings and kid-friendly explanations of big-four renewal energy resources: solar, wind, geothermal and biomass. And we love to link from the site to the California Energy Commission’s award-winning Energy Quest site for games, stories, movies and cool contests. So, yeah, we old-schoolers may still prefer the voluptuous, volatile 1953 Tinker Bell—once rumored to have been based on Marilyn Monroe, dontcha know?—but we love that Tink ’08 is a great green inspiration for the little pixie in all of us.

What

“We are engineered as goal-seeking mechanisms. We are built that way. When we have no personal goal which we are interested in and which “means something” to us, we are apt to “go around in circles,” feel “lost” and find life itself “aimless,” and “purposeless.” We are built to conquer environment, solve problems, achieve goals, and we find no real satisfaction or happiness in life without obstacles to conquer and goals to achieve. People who say that life is not worthwhile are really saying that they themselves have no personal goals which are worthwhile. Prescription: Get yourself a goal worth working for.” ~ Maxwell Maltz from Psycho-Cynernetics

Genius.

So, what’s your *major* goal right now?!? Do you have one? Are you moving toward it?

If not, imagine riding a bike. Only imagining NOT going anywhere. Try sitting on the seat, without letting your feet touch the ground and lemme know how that works out for you. Bikes were made to MOVE and, as Maltz says, “A bicycle maintains its poise and equilibrium only so long as it is going forward towards something. You have a good bicycle. Your trouble is you are trying to maintain your balance sitting still, with no place to go. It is no wonder you feel shaky.”

Love that. If you’re feeling funky, check in and see if you have a goal that really inspires you. My hunch is, the worse you feel, the less likely you have a compelling goal. Good news is that’s EASY to change. Set a goal that inspires you–could be something as mundane as cleaning your house while listening to great music or an athletic goal like doing a triathlon or a big goal like starting a new biz or relationship. Whatever it is, go for it!

Have you seen how Dora the Explorer is being marketed nowadays? The rights to this once-proud symbol of girl agency & power has been sold to Mattel. Dora now stars in sexed-up, passive incarnations in toy stores, on cereal boxes…and even, more and more, on her TV show.

Sign on to a petition http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/Dora_Makeover/ and urge Mattel and Nickelodeon to knock it off and restore Dora to her place of inspiration!!!

What

How often do you want to make love with your partner? How often does your partner want to make love? Many times the answers to both questions are not in sync. The best answer for your relationship, however, may be found somewhere in between.

Read the Complete Guide to:
Valentine’s Day

When most relationships first begin there is high degree of passion and sexual frequency. The newness of discovering one another as well as the newness of the relationship is the primary contributor.

Over time this new-found excitement and intrigue begins to wane and a more realistic pace develops. When both partners begin to settle into this pace, and are comfortable with the adjusted frequency, their shared passion and love for one another continues to be cultivated and refined. However, if one partner becomes disappointment or even resentful of the diminished frequency, then conflict can develop in the relationship.

If you and your partner disagree on the amount of intimacy in your relationship, consider the following:

1. Discuss and determine, together, why the frequency in your relationship has declined. Look at what is happening outside of the bedroom first. Usually it’s the day-to-day activities of work or attending to the needs of the children that leaves one, or both, emotionally drained at the end of the day.

2. If you are the one who is sometimes left exhausted after the day’s work is done, assure your partner it’s not your lack of interest or love in him or her – you’re just tired and need to recover.

3. Share expectations! Ask your partner how often he or she would like to be intimate. When they would like to be intimate – do they prefer making love in the morning when they are more rested or at the end of the day? Next, share your expectations. You both might be closer to a common set of expectations than you may think. If there are wide gaps in these expectations, make a plan to reach out and accommodate one anther in ways that will not violate your personal boundaries.

4. Realize you are responsible for your own needs. Making love is the ultimate expression of love, connection and commitment. Both need to be in the moment in order for the experience to be mutually enjoyable. If there are times when you want to make love for other reasons, pursue individual ways to take care of this while honoring the commitments you have made with your loved one. Sometimes personal gratification is all that is needed.

5. Trust and Surrender. In times when your partner is not in the state of mind to make love, trust this is a temporary situation and trust your partner will want to receive you again in due time. Surrender the temptation to promote your needs over the needs of your partner. Surrender to the belief that your focus must be on your partner’s needs without expecting any thing in return. By trusting and surrendering, your needs will begin to be met by a more willing partner.

Couples who talk about the intimacy in their relationships are in a much better position to deal with any potential conflict or pot-holes that will develop from time-to-time. It’s OK to ask your partner to make love and it’s also OK for your partner to take a rain check.

As relationships mature and grow stronger, frequency is no longer gauged by “how many times” it becomes measured by the trust and respect one has for the other and the willingness to make the time to give and receive meaningful intimacy.

Once profits go down for the producers, they'll be forced to go the other direction. What

They’re calling it Gigonomics – the economy of gigs. The fact is, we’re all freelancers now, because the days of working for one company for 30 years and then retiring have gone the way of the 8-track.

Here are three proven steps to create your Plan B:

1. Use AFFORMATIONS.

No, that’s not a misprint. Instead of saying, " I am good enough", try asking, "Why can I do this?"

I call these empowering questions AFFORMATIONS – NOT affirmations!
The success gurus told us to use old-school “affirmations” like, "I am rich." And your brain responds, "Yeah, right!"

Instead of saying a statement you don’t believe, why not ask an Afformation like: "Why did everything work out better than I thought?"

When you ask empowering questions, your mind will Search for why you can, in fact, handle this.

One of my Students was facing a car repair bill of $7,852 and she immediately panicked. Then, she remembered how to use Afformations and started afforming, “Why did everything work out just fine?”

The next day, the auto shop told her that her entire bill was covered by warranty. Crisis averted.

2. Find a Safe Haven.

A Safe Haven is a person who can give you unconditional support while still holding you accountable to the demands of business. My studies of the Naturals of Success – who I call Three Percenters – have shown that in every single case, the so-called Naturals had someone in their lives who believed in them, even when they didn’t believe in themselves.

Find a Safe Haven who believes in you and holds you accountable, because we will often do more for others than even ourselves. A true Safe Haven will show you how to get rid of the “head trash” that’s been holding you back.

3. Install your People System.

Just like your house or your body, your life is comprised of Systems that must function properly so you can reinvent yourself. The Five Essential Systems of Support are: People, Activities, Environment, Introspection, and Simplify.

The most essential one is the People System. Why? Because people have all the money, all the contacts, and all the things you want.

If even one of your Systems isn’t working properly, you’ll have a hard time creating Plan B. That’s why you need to ensure that your Systems are running at optimal levels to create your Plan B.

Success doesn’t happen because Plan A worked. The real reason people succeed is what occurs after Plan A.

What

We’ve all heard about the dangers of high cholesterol, particularly LDL (“bad cholesterol”).  Many of you may be or know someone who is taking a statin drug to treat this condition.  Examples include Lipitor, Zocor, Pravachol, Lescol, Mevacor, Crestor, and Vytorin (a combo pill containing Zocor).  Statins interfere with an enzyme in the liver responsible for cholesterol synthesis.  In 2002, guidelines were published that recommended lower target levels for LDL.  A couple of years ago, new indications were approved for Lipitor and Zocor to include preventing certain cardiovascular problems, regardless if the patient has high cholesterol.  As a result, more people are taking statins and higher doses are being prescribed.

Common side effects of statins include headache, rash, nausea/vomiting/diarrhea, and muscle pain/weakness.  Although serious liver problems are rare, liver problems are a concern.  This can present as mild muscle pain or weakness. It has been suggested that statins decrease coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) levels, which deplete muscle cells of their energy source.  This may be the mechanism for causing muscle problems.  Some studies have come out indicating that supplementation with CoQ10 may help relieve these symptoms.  So what is CoQ10 you may ask?

CoQ10 is a vitamin-like substance naturally found in the body.  Cells use it to make energy for bodily functions and it also acts as an antioxidant.  It is used for heart conditions (chest pain, heart failure, and high blood pressure), certain muscular disorders, periodontal disorders, and for immune support.  There is a natural decline in the amount of CoQ10 in the body with age.  Coupled with the increase use of statins with age, this may warrant the consideration of CoQ10 supplementation for more people.  Hopefully as more studies validate the importance of CoQ10, health care providers will become more comfortable with recommending this supplement.  Don’t hesitate to discuss this topic with your heath care provider.

What IS is

As one searches for that which one desires he may come to a moment of transfiguration quite unexpectedly. In this singular moment the brilliance of NOW may dawn upon his consciousness in a way that nothing has ever come close to in his inward and outward seeking.

"What  is"  fills his beingness and the "seeming to be" falls from the mind into the realm of nothingness from whence it came. In that moment there is only what IS. Perfect complete beingness. The eternal now, boundless, unfathomable.

The mind can make this leap also quite logically and anchor this relevelation, this ecstasy.

There is only one thing: that which IS. It is all inclusive and unmeasurable. We are in it and we are it. Where it is present all that IS is present.

What "seems to be" has no being but only seeming to be. A reflection of a limited idea projected outward or inward onto the all inclusive beingness but having no existence except to that mind or minds which sustain it.

The seeming is good or bad, high or low, hot or cold, fast or slow depending on the perspective of the perceiver.

What "is" cannot be percieved. Perception requiring separation. It simply IS. All encompassing, all embracing of all that IS.

Nothing can be except in this ISNESS. Illusion depends on what is real, only played with, manipulated, ignored, for our amazement or our deception and or ego and separation justification/glorification.

There is nothing but perfect beingness in this Eternal Now.

There is no where but now here.

What

Since I recently moved to Austin, Texas I’m meeting new people and finding myself in the position of trying to explain very simply what ayurvedic massage is like. After being at the Chopra Center for ten years surrounded by people who had an understanding of the basics

(things like vata, pitta, kapha, panchakarma… etc.) it’s a reality check for me to realize most people have never heard of it.

Here’s my take on it:

When I’m working, my intention is to loosen ama (toxic residue that accumulates due to the stress of everyday living, improper diet, negative emotions, and so on). Ama gets stuck in our tissues. It gets stuck everywhere – in muscles, connective tissue, organs, fluids, you name it. According to ayurvedic philosophy, ama is fat soluble. This is why ayurvedic massages are so oily. We use different kinds of fats (oils) to liquefy the gooey ama that’s stuck in the tissues so it can be eliminated by the body.

Note to the squeamish: do not get an ayurvedic massage if you don’t want to be really oily, from head to toe, and that includes your hair. Don’t wear makeup, and don’t put any “product” on your hair. Contact lenses are fine.

To achieve this, we rub, rub, rub, and rub some more. (It feels fantastic!) We’re trying to get as much oil absorbed into your skin as possible. It’s completely different than a typical western-style deep tissue massage. It’s generally quick, repetitive, rhythmic, and hypnotic with lots of long strokes up and down, up and down the muscles and around, around, around the joints. We’re also trying to create friction and heat between our hands and your skin to stimulate your pores into opening up and drinking in the oil. You know how when you put lotion or sunscreen on your skin, but you’ve put too much on, so you have to keep rubbing and rubbing to get it all to absorb? It’s the same idea.

Does that make sense?

If you take it up a notch and commit to going through the panchakarma process (detoxification and rejuvenation of the body by way of … oh, lots of different methods…) you’ll be getting oily massages every day, along with other kinds of therapies, to keep loosening, liquefying, and moving the ama out of your body. That kind of intensive therapy day after day for however long you choose to do it can be, well, intense. People *think* they want to have a massage every day – how luxurious! But trust me, it’s not always pretty, and you don’t always feel so good when all that gunk is being released. But by the end of panchakarma, you should feel radiant, relaxed and happy. It’s quite an experience – maybe some readers will share their personal stories.

Obviously, each practitioner is going to work a little differently. We all have unique personalities and tendencies, and you have to find the one(s) you like – which could be different therapists on different days. Some days you just want some love, a little sweetness, and on other days you want someone to scrape the crap off of you (for lack of a better term). Don’t feel like you need to be loyal to one therapist or another. We get it. You deserve to have what you want!

Her first book, Massage In Minutes: Simple Techniques for Anyone, Anytime, Anywhere, came from her desire to create something more user-friendly than the DIY massage books currently out there. The techniques in Massage In Minutes are simple to learn, easy to perform, feel great, and are incredibly effective. She reeducates readers that, if they have ten minutes and a little bit of floor space, they can give or receive a great massage. No special equipment is needed, no oils are involved, and everything is done through loose clothes.

"If massage is an art, Grace Wilson is certainly one of the many masters. I am delighted that the public at large now has the opportunity to benefit from her expertise." - Deepak Chopra, MD

One Response to What

What

Post Sex and the City, I feel that many perfectly normal women are running around wondering why they don’t have love in their lives. After spending a marathon few nights watching the series, seasons one thru six with my girlfriends, I have to admit three things.

One. I hate the music.
Two. Life’s basic goal should not be to find a boyfriend.
Three. The perfect shoe can still make or break an outfit.

I just returned to NYC after spending two weeks in Houston, pre- and post-Katrina. What a mess. Houston was inundated with refugees and thoughts of the recent tsunami were on everyone’s mind, especially us South Asians who have family back in the home countries.

But, I have to say, there is nothing like a disaster that really pulls a nation of people together. Many of my friends volunteered their time and their money to help those in need. All over Houston were signs that read “LA-ID, 25%,” “Free Coffee,” or “Donations Accepted.” All over the city, government officials, community leaders and concerned citizens were attending ad hoc meetings to figure out how to best help the relief effort. Love was in the air.

That was cool. Very cool.

And that is what life’s basic goal should be. Love and friendships. Not a boyfriend.

While I was in Houston, my friends (many of whom I had not seen in over a year since I had left) and I we were getting together almost every night. One friend loaned me his car so that I could get around, another let me stay at her gorgeous condo while she was in Los Angeles. Dinners, lunches, parties, all in my honor. I realize that these are friends I will keep for the rest of my life.

When I pray and meditate, I always ask God to fill my heart with love. I used to think that that meant a soulmate of sorts. This time while in Houston, (the longest duration since I had moved) I realized that even though I may be a single, God has surrounded me with love. I truly love my friends, and they truly love me. We share the good; we share the bad; we celebrate our happiest moments; we offer support during our bad times. When factors beyond our control, aka Katrina, affect us, it’s these friends that come, like angels, to us; God’s angels on earth; the people who matter to us; true friendship; true love.

So, for all those women who are single, I say to celebrate the freedom that it brings and see that soulmate love piece by piece in each one of your friends. The ones who come with two pints of ice cream when you get dumped, the ones who cue you in on the latest shoe sale at Tootsie Plohound; the ones who say they saw your ex and he looked so ugly and no girl, you are so much hotter than his current woman.

Katrina or not, true love, the kind that comes from within and all around you, really does conquer all.

And that’s super cool.
