Meditation: Who Am I… Really?
Who Am I?
I Am.
This is one of the most powerful and beautiful meditations I have come across. During mediation, ask yourself the question, "who am I?" But do not look to your mind for the answers. Instead go to the stillness within, and listen. The awareness or consciousness behind your mind is who you really are. You are not your mind, and to try to define the infinity and limitlessness that is You with labels, no matter how detailed and lengthy, can be a terrible error. Your True self, the Self that is eternal and timeless, can not be fully understood through thoughts.
Think of all the ways you define yourself: I am this, I am that–I was this, I was that. Well instead of adding on labels, leave the "I am" alone. Even positive labels, although helpful at times, can ultimately hinder you from complete realization. Even an intellectually true statement can only point to what really is. For example, "I am a divine creation of God," although a true statement, can only point to the actual experience of it. Jesus expressed his understanding of his True Self when he profoundly stated, "I am, that I am." He understood that His divine nature could not be described by any word or sentence–no matter how eloquent.
You can also use the "I am" statement as a mantra through-out the day. Simply say, "I am ____" and leave it blank. Let your present awareness fill in the space and experience who you really are. The more we break out of "who we think we are," the more we will realize and come to know who we really are.
