Why Don’t We Remember Our Past Lives?

Question:

Why don’t we remember? Dear Deepak I don’t know if you have an answer for this question, but why is it when we incarnate into the physical, we forget our true self or where we were before our birth. We have spent much more time on "the other side" so to speak, then we have spent here on Earth, yet there is not one memory of it. Remembering where we were before we were born would make life so much more enjoyable – there would be no fear of death, and we would be able to accept the death of people we Love with more ease.
Is it wrong to have a huge interest in life after death? Sometimes it scares me, because I feel more of a interest in what could come after this life, then in this actual life.

Answer:

Aside from the rare individuals who do remember fragments of their past lives, the reason we don’t remember previous lives is because it is not helpful for our present growth. Too much memory only clutters and burdens the mind and draws attention away from the present moment where our consciousness needs to be.

Even our everyday experiences of the present are made possible and coherent only because we filter out most of the   data that comes into our senses. We select a small bit of that ocean of information and  process it into a picture of our reality. Without limiting our experience and our memories into what  is useful and appropriate, we would be incapacitated with a deluge of information.

It’s not wrong to have an interest in life after death, but you need to ask yourself “how is that interest helping you live your life more fully right now?”

Love,

Deepak

    Dr. Chopra,

This seemed the appropriate place to comment about my experience of not remembering my current life! I wrote today, on Intent, about blocking the memories of my sister's death for over forty years. During that time, I didn't even know that I was blocking it.

Your books, particularly The Book of Secrets and The Way of the Wizard, were both very helpful to me before and after my experience with grief postponed.

    Thank you and namaste,

    Paul Puckett

As it happens, I was a pimp by the name of Theophilus Rembrandt. Damn but I could wear that black Zoot suit and wingtips well, not to mention the crushed velvet jacket and of course the ultimate accessory – a silver wolf's head swordstick. ;o)

During the last ten years I have been able to remember several past lives, the memories come spontaneously and quietly.

And I agree totally with Dr. Chopra. If they are not accessible it's because they would have an adverse effect on you living fully in the now. Had I forced these memories with the aid of hypnotherapists and the like when I was younger, I would probably have used them to escape the now. I believe past life memories are accessible to me because they can now aid my present growth.

Among other things, past incarations help me being more focused in my true Self, having known several passing egos. I also recognise most key people in my life from past lives, and I know because of my memories why they appear in my life. I can see the main themes and make the most of the opportunities. That way, my past life memories make the now intensely important. There are no words to describe the feeling when a relationship of hate and fear in one lifetime turns to love and forgiveness in this life.

It has shown me the importance of trying to meet every moment, and everyone, with love.

Your past lives are accessible but not in your current state of spiritual development. I like to think of my mind like an old door covered in multiple layers of paint. Each layer obscures the one before it so you will need to remove the top layer before you can see the next layer. You will need to learn how to calm your emotions and silence your mind once this is accomplished then you will notice a clarity of thought. Once you have experienced this clarity of thought you will need to learn how to maintain it for a long period of time.It is at this point that you will develop a depth of understanding / wisdom and become the silent witness. Its at this point that you will begin to see glimpses of past lives.
