“Many regard yoga as idol worship, but one couple has set out to dispel that view right in the heart of an ultra-Orthodox community.”
Meet the Kolbergs, quite possibly the only Hasidic Jewish yoga teachers in the world. Rachel and Avraham live in Israel and run a small (secret) yoga studio in the Haredi neighborhood of Beit Shemesh. They teach yoga in the ultra-Orthodox community of Ramat Beit Shemesh, where the practice is widely regarded as taboo.
The family recently took a very brave leap, making their story public through the online newspaper Haaretz. The article (which you can read on YogaDork here) provides an intimate portrait of what it’s like to teach yoga as Hasidic Jews living in Israel. The couple also discuss how disconnected they felt from their bodies before they discovered yoga and why they believe teaching this particular practice is so important in their community the community.
