Interesting perspective. Our hearts can race in the midst of disagreement. That is, if you're so invested in being right. I wonder if it is in everyone's best interest to cultivate a level of openness and non-attachment to one's partner's ideals, opinions…even his or her very being as a more permanent way of averting the knee-jerk reaction. That way one is a peaceful sea that can absorb even the perturbations of one's partner…and still love him or her…and sleep undisturbed.

It's easy to talk about calming oneself, but I think such an ability must be cultivated. How? Perfect practice. Lots of approaches to doing so can be found throughout the Internet. My preference: constantly increasing my ability to realize that this life experience and its dramas are transient, that my ego is part of this experience, and connecting with that "me" that is beneath my ego.
