I”ve had Fibromyalgia (FM) and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) most of my life and understand the challenges of finding relief from frustration, hopelessness and feeling alone. Over the years I’ve learned to manage these disorders in a positive way by cultivating nurturing self-care practices that enhance the quality of my life.
I finally came to realize that I had developed a set of positive principles that I live by, principles and practices that help me live more peacefully with the nature of chronic illness. This led me to pursue a vocation as a wellness coach and sharing the principles I live by with others who struggle as I do.
Today I’d like to share my number one self-care principle. The principle I’m referring to is practicing STILLNESS and is extremely beneficial to promoting wellness, whether you have illness or not.
I believe that in our fast paced culture we forget to be still and look within to find a place of peace. When we do, the effects can be very profound. Whenever I practice stillness, I feel like I’ve taken a shower on the inside. I feel refreshed and renewed and ready to return to the activities of my day.
I challenge you to practice stillness and see what benefits you enjoy from it. Here are some ways you can experience stillness:
- Just sit quietly and relax with no distractions for 10 minutes
- Observe your breathing
- Observe your thoughts, but don’t judge
- Go to a pleasant place in your mind
- Meditate
- Let go (of everything!)
- Whatever feels right for you, just be still and silent
When you’re finished, see if you feel more calm, peaceful, refreshed.
Practicing stillness will help activate your relaxation response. I think amazing things happen in your life when you do this regularly. Hit your PAUSE BUTTON on a daily basis and let me know your results!
